Yes, I agree with the views on apple.au, I am hoping to go too, this is the response i got ....

looks like they are still out of control. i just registered (11:30pm tuesday) for the sydney show and got a confirmation of a seat.

Apple Australia incompetance

j763, I fully agree with you. I have had a bit to deal with them, and whilst they seem to be well intentioned, to me (an outsider) it seems that the amount of administration clogs everything up. But what do you do? Complaints and suggestions go unheard... I am surprised that this situation has lasted so long. I guess the reason is that the competition is no better :)

Good to see you back around here.

Batter up.. :D

Thanks Mcrain! I expected to get flamed because of the harshness of my response! :) I dont think Apple is perfect, but if people think of the size of the company and the variety of products they produce, software, hardware, and the kind of proprietary parts they have to handle it puts it into perspective. Australian law states that if a company sells an electrical product, then it must support it with spare parts for 10 years. Think of all the different parts and styles of products they have had in that time (you should see the size of their warehouse in Oz), then I think people would see why there are methods to their apparent madness in terms of paperwork.
And back to the original topic, sort of, none of the Apple guys were letting any secrets out, no matter how many drinks we plied them with while clubbing on the Friday night! The only thing weve been told is to make sure we definately clear our stock in the next week or so, with a hinted emphasis that whats coming will put the current stock to shame, making it impossible to move the old stuff.

I don't have anything against you -- you're just wrong.

Here's the flamage:

Do you know the sales figures for the xserve in Australia???!!!

I didn't say they were cheap. I said they were stupid, incompetent and inept.

Apple wouldnt waste that kinda money if it didnt think it worthwhile.

If I were you, I wouldn't be surprised, considering the great success of the xserve, if you're not invited back to the 5star hotels for a while...

The Apple guys DO NOT all use wintel, thats crap
Well, there's no way I could convince you of that is there. But I hope you'll settle for "AppleCenters use Wintel", because I can prove that. See below!

a lot of them DO know how to run UNIX.

Everyone on this board in Australia, ring up apple now 133622, dial through the menu to AppleCare Technical Support and ask how to edit your hosts file under Mac OS X. You will have to go through at least 5 people before you get an answer... and the answer will probably be wrong.

Several times I had to get their help, and they all seemed pretty clued in on it.

Are you in Sales or are you a tech? If you're a salesperson, WTF are you being trained in the xserve and if you're a tech, you just proved my point.

I specially went to the trouble of registering specifically to point out the crap youve spread.
Well, I hope you enjoy MR.

Since you brought up the xserve, let's take a moment to have a look at its adoption. And since you claim to be an employee of one of the many fine apple retailers (note sarcasm) in Australia, let's just take a moment to look at the adoption of the xserve within Apple Retailers themselves.

MyMacAustralia -- Running on Microsoft Windows 2000

Desktop Power -- Running on Mambo Site Server

NextByte -- Running on FreeBSD

Pentagon -- Running on Microsoft Windows 2000

maximage, I really think you should remove your head from your back ori:eek:ice and look up to see that AppleCenters are using BackOffice.

So where to start? Xserve is a total new direction for Apple that theyve never been in before, in a serious manner, and theyre entering an entrenched marketplace, so naturally itll take time to get the ball rolling. No, im not a tech, im in sales looking after the professional end of the market, so personally dont use unix, but can see where Xserve would shine (video, etc). And besides, we use Macs, running ON Unix, NOT Unix itself, if you can follow my point. How many people using their Mac every day actually use Unix? Its the Mac OS that Apple sell and support, NOT the underlying Unix itself. The console is really there for people who want to play with it and already know what theyre doing. And I cant talk for other stores, but we personally use a program running on OS X for ALL of our stock control, sales, appointments, contacts, etc....

Console vs. Terminal

The console is really there for people who want to play with it and already know what theyre doing

Um, I'm no Unix guru or anything, just a simple wannabe, but isn't the console simply a means to view system messages? Perhaps you mean Terminal (Mac OS X's shell interface)?

Try typing '>console' at the username prompt... and be amazed. There's two uses for the word "console" in the UNIX word - the physical terminal attached to the machine, and a program that takes messages intended for that and displays it on a non-local (or non-text) display, like Console.app and xconsole do.

prediction: no new PMs until non-OS 9 bootable

I don't think they'll bother releasing new PowerMacs until they're truly ready to kill OS 9. the latest rumors put that in January.

why would they put out a box--even with DDR--if a whole new configuration (and new motherboard design) is right around the corner?

I think they'll ride their current line until 1st Q. 2003 when G5s and all the bells and whistles come with it.

Wow! That is pretty cool. Good to know about. Thanks for the tip.

God I hope your wrong :( . If a computer doest come out by the end of the month I will be pissed, but if one doesnt come out by the end of this year! That will be the liimit, I think Ill be forced into the Wintel world  . I dont like it anymore then y'all do. But I really dont think that apple will do this because a lot of people would ditch their macs for PCs if apple didnt upgrade their already old line of PMs until 2003.

ha I'm going, I registred, so any sydney biyz or girls want to come along just PM or whatever no wait email me

12 year old

Well now 12 year old is just a random title or a mistake maybe they ment soft instead of hard, like a boner, hard not soft. Or they want this to be a mac event like all mac like never befor like only doors no windows and no soft micro or any other and that might be y?

Apologies about my console vs terminal stuffup, I was typing in the wee hours of the morning having had 2 hours sleep each night for the last 5 days. As for the previous Apple server systems, just ask anyone at Apple and they will happily admit that theyve never done the job properly. Previous servers have been either altered PowerMacs or run proprietary software that was nothing like the standard OS. The Xserve is their first PROPER attempt at the market. An as for the complaint J763 or whatever his name is made about the Perth having only 2 guys in the Apple office, so friggin what? Look at the size of Perth, its a SMALL city. How much more do you really need? First off you whinge that theres too much administration, paperwork, management etc (that was the jist, sorry cant remember the exact quote, forgive me) but then complain that a small city only has two guys physically here? Which way do you want it? We have about 6 AppleCentres / Authorised Solutions Providers and a handfull of other resellers, hardly enough to justify more face to face staff. Most of our support and ordering is over the phone or net anyway.

HELLO

What are you talking about buddy

I clearly talked about twelve year old girls and Boners in that last message

Is this a normal everyday thing or what?

"Analyst predicts Apple-Intel link:- Apple Computer will likely shift to using Intel chips, while circumstances exist that could well push Dell Computer and Sun Microsystems into a friendly embrace, predicted Bear Stearns analyst Andrew Neff."

Talking of future Macs, how about this (from ZDNet - http://news.zdnet.co.uk/story/0,,t275-s2120297,00.html)

Could be an interesting development, if it turns out to be true....

NOT THE XSERVE

We just had an xServe 2 day training seminar... its not to do with the xServe...

We are all so interested, our manager today was talking about closing down for the afternoon for the entire shop to attend it ... (I work in a Major Sydney based AppleCentre)

Very very interesting

ugh hope you people are wrong

cleo, nice to meet ya! two exaulted titles (#1p/d & of somewhat lesser importance <g>, m/r d-g), very impressive. and #2 p/d is still nothin' to sneeze at macette... good friend of mine lives n of melbourne.

i'm also at the end of the rope. can see them doing a speed bump, or getting similar momboard to xServe, and w/ same/similar to current case (BLECH!).

as t'is, have been using SuSE8 for an increasing amt of my daily computering; once i can get my dev environment (omnis studio) going it'll essentially just be email and graphic converter on the os9 mac (7500/g3/333).

am moving to PHP and postgreSQL and life would be so much easier on X w/ that, but hate to buy a new machine when, as someone mentioned earlier, new ones w/ much greater capability is in q1-2-3 next year. am considering a 533dualie to get me thru til then.

anyway, hope steve surprises us...
