If they donated the technology for a standard then the patents will go with that.
Amway licenses the core patents for the Qi standard. Apple licensing patents of their own probably lowers their own payments to the pool.

The EU is targeting wireless chargers next so this move by the consortium is getting ahead of the problem. Now there will be 1 standard practically speaking before they have to revise the law.
Even now, ‘wireless’ charging is interoperative. IPhones can use Qi chargers and non-iPhones can use MagSafe chargers as they are just Qi chargers with added alignment magnets. There is no incompatibility that would require regulations. All the same, I do see this as a good thing for non-iPhones and a good thing for expanding the options for chargers.

Some serious Soul Train haters gave me thumbs down. Just cause you can’t dance like Rosie no need to hate 😂
Maybe the issue is more people have NO idea what you are referencing. I'm 40 and SoulTrain despite the fact its was on for decades, most people think of ST as something that "died in the 70's" and have almost no idea it went much longer than that or who anyone on it is. Like I said, im 40 and I had no idea that ST was even still airing while I was alive. I thought it died in the 70's till I just looked it up.

For those of you worried about heat!
Or do it my way (Trust me I am Engineer) (really)

Stand is metal and from Apple (chargers not included).

Making fun of myself here :)

This is why it's quite possible that Apple complies with the EU rules by removing Lightning and leaving MagSafe. USB-C wouldn't be required by the EU in that scenario.
This one always beffles me.

Wireless only GOOD
Wireless+C GOOD
Wireless+L BAD

Why??? You still have the wireless choice either way

It is difficult to get excited about magnetic charging when it so rarely works well with protective cases. For me, that is the fatal flaw. I'm not going to keep my $1200 USD iPhone 13 Pro Max in a flimsy case, much less in no case at all! So anything related to magnets in a no go for me...
I had my 13 pro slip out of my shorts pocket when I was going probably 30 mph on a bike on the road. It was in an Otterbox Symmetry slimline case and it slid and rolled on the Asphalt quite a long ways with no damage to the phone. Its a Magsafe compatible case and happens to work really well with none of the downsides you mentioned.

Odd, I've been using Qi charging for years with protective cases and it's worked great.

Until the efficiency and speed of wireless charging is comparable with wired charging it is a no go for me.

Helpful tip - you can actually use both methods, choosing the one appropriate for the situation.

Most of the time I use wireless charging -- at my desk, in the kitchen, bedroom nightstand. Don't need fast charging in those scenarios and it keeps my phone charged without thinking about it, making it so I very rarely ever need to charge more quickly. Also the wireless charging stand at my desk is super handy since I'm not fussing with a cable anytime I get up and take my phone with me.

I do keep a cable in the kitchen for visitors who don't remember to keep their phones charged.

I mounted an Apple MagSafe puck in my car.

It holds my phone in a comfortable place and it charges my phone.

I can drive around for 20 minutes and add 20% to my battery.

I'm a big fan of MagSafe.

Lame! They should have made Lightning the legally required port. Let Android be the one to improvise, adapt, and overcome. It will be good for them!
Sure, make a proprietary connector the standard. Not sure where you see Apple having to improvise or adopt. The USB-C connector is being successfully used in plenty of their other products already.

I lost my iPhone 12 pro genuine charger 😓, which companies charger would be the best for me or any other specific criteria that I need to check?
Go for Apple genuine. Rock solid voltage applied as it should be. Others will fluctuate and harm devices.

Except for Qi, you also need the power supply, so you need to compare it to the cable, not the power supply.

Efficiency is a red herring, though. Phones use so ridiculous little energy that the losses are a rounding error. You couldn’t drive 2 miles in a Tesla with the electricity lost by Qi charging for a whole year. Most devices waste more energy with standby.
I prefer the wireless, magsafe, it's very nice.
And for one device, it's miniscule. Compound by 100's of millions of users, potentially billions. I'd be surprised if it did not register at some measurable level.

Yeah, CarPlay is going to be a big issue. Apple will have to solve for it, otherwise, CarPlay will become DOA. People do NOT replace cars that often, and just now, you are really starting to see wireless CarPlay adoption, but there are far too many vehicles out there with Wired CarPlay only.

I could actually see an Apple MagSafe puck that also has “wireless” CarPlay included, so it does the translation and submits the info to the in car USB port to the wired CarPlay unit.

They would need to make USB-A and USB-C versions, but it is a good stop-gap
Super easy to solve. I put a wired to wireless carplay adapter in my car, and a wireless charger in my front cubby.
And my old wired only carplay is new age!

They didn’t ban it. Apple is free to include it alongside the legally required port.
That would be interesting to see the new iPhone have both ports. And the one thing that bugs me about this is why can you have wireless only or wireless and C but not wireless and L? You still have wireless for all three

I think if it’s carrying power, it has to be C. If the lightning port in the EU is configured to NOT carry power, then it’s just a data port and those can be whatever’s required for purpose?

Yes, but those after-market wirelss carplay adaptors all seem to be too slow and too flaky. I gave up and went back to a USB wired connection.

I'm sure you've had 10000 replies now saying "my case does it" but I can definitely recommend these guys:

I've had their wallets / cases on my last 4 iPhones and they always hold up for a couple of years.
