The Amazon Kindle has edge. It is built into the device cost. No monthly fee. It allows a Kindle owner to connect to the Amazon book store wherever they are to buy ebooks. You can't make a phone call with one, and no one ever wondered if it was a phone. The adding edge to the Touch would give it ubiquitous web connectivity and doesn't have to give it phone features. It expands the usefullness of it's existing apps beyond your WiFi access. Apple would profit because you could and would buy music or apps anywhere you had the urge rather than talking yourself out of it before you got back to WiFi range.

Of course the Touch is already a VOIP phone. Adding edge won't change that.
