Optical Drive will never be dropped...
Although it would be nice if it was.

Never say "never." After all, they dropped the floppy disk drive.

What is the point of a sleep light?

Sounds terrible for those of us who have computers in the bedroom.

My office lights up like a Christmas tree at night with all the indicator lights in the room! One more wouldn't be noticed. The sleep light helps detect sleeping issues and provides an indication of whether the computer is off, sleeping, or just powering off the display. My iMac is so quiet it's hard to tell the difference.

After taking my iMac apart twice its evident how much room the superdrive is taking up. If removed they could fit in more powerful hardware and allow it more cooling room. Perhaps the 21" could have the same top end graphics as the 27" does now (or a lot closer to it anyway). With the extra internal space they could maybe give the internals a bit of a work over and have the hard drive user serviceable. That would be awesome. Its a pain in the butt having to go through the screen for everything (apart from RAM). For those who still need an DVD drive then you can easily sit an external on the base of the iMac or next to it, like we do with external hard drives

They could go that route, but more likely would just reduce the depth of the housing to make it more sleek. Frankly, if they made the housing 6 inches deep to give plenty of room I'd be fine with that. I don't need an anorexic computer!

Actually, even though I need a DVD drive (at least one in the house) I really wouldn't mind if it were external. The current design is awkward to access and frequently scratches (and ruins) the media. It also prevents putting a second monitor to the right. I've got to put it on the left to get access to the drive.

if they fix (and i mean completely fix) the yellow-tint issue (i'm a current victim), i'd considering buying another imac. other than that, the current imac is my ideal machine and i don't really want any changes.

well, if i had to, i'd say an antiglare option would be very nice.

Does anyone have any idea how well the iMac sells for Apple? For me, the iMac is a perfect machine - it allows me to use the iPad, or a possible Mac Air, as my mobile device and not have to use a large, heavy Macbook Pro. I would like to see the iMac line continue and make evolutionary changes like SSD, etc., as prices allow. Although I do watch some movies on my iMac, I use it mainly for work, surfing, etc., and sizes above the current 27" do not add benefit for me.

I have a small home office and it also lights like Christmas with all the lights from the modem, TC, printer, etc. at night. Like others, my iMac is very quiet. I would think that having all of the gear in a bedroom would take some getting used to.

You're probably right, any space saved would then be shaved!

That's interesting. I would not be surprised to see some consolidation with mini/iMac/MacPro.

There's about a 2:1 price ratio between the MacPro and iMac and between the iMac and the mini. That's quite a spread to consolidate. And they are each so distinctive. There has been recent death fears about the MacPro and recurring ones about the mini. Everyone (but Apple) seems to want a mini-tower.

I doubt if we'll see any change to the iMac until Ivy Bridge processors become available Q1 or Q2 2012. In addition to Ivy Bridge, I expect to see USB3, since it'll be supported by the chipset and very hard for Apple to ignore. There will probably be more SSD options, as well. As for optical drives, I think it'll be another year or so before they disappear. However, I wouldn't miss having one in my next iMac if it lets Apple do things such as improve cooling and if there's a low-cost external option.
