Goldman Sachs analysts are claiming that Apple's 2nd generation iPad will come with a camera, mini USB port and a lighter/thinner design in the second quarter of 2011:
Apple Inc. may introduce its second-generation iPad in the second quarter of 2011, said Henry King and Kevin Lu, analysts at Goldman Sachs Group Inc, in a report dated 27 September. The new 9.7-inch iPad is targeted to be thinner and lighter, with an embedded camera and mini USB, according to the report.
It seems almost certain that the next iPad will include a front-facing camera as Apple appears to be standardizing FaceTime across their iOS devices. Supply chain reports have already described production ramp up for the first half of 2011. The Goldman Sachs analysts, however, don't believe the rumored 7" iPad has been finalized and does not expect that model to launch ahead of the new 9.7" model.

Incorporating a Mini-USB connector, however, would be a surprising move from Apple who has developed an entire eco-system around its proprietary 30-pin dock connector. In the meanwhile, Apple may already be forced to adopt Micro-USB connectors on future iPhones due to recent regulation standards implemented in Europe for 2011. This would make the adoption of Mini-USB on the next iPad even more puzzling. The Goldman Sachs analysts Henry King and Kevin Lu haven't had much of a record for Apple-related predictions in the past.

If it has a mini usb (if at all) it will still have the universal 30 pin dock connecter

That would be pretty pointless since you would need a Mini-USB to USB connector anyways so it still would require a adapter...?

I am pretty sure we know this.

It will have at least a front facing camera.
It will be thinner/ lighter.
It will have a even better battery life.
Will have the same size screen, same resolution. 3rd gen will get a screen update.

It will gain a faster processor, and more Ram.

These are all obvious facts. We don't need any reports to back this up...

The USB will be reported as adding keyboard support, USB printer, and things like that. iOS 5.0 will bring a better file management for 3rd party devices.

The iPad 2 NEEDS flash, I bought one and loved it when I was on HTML 5 sites. HTML 5 may be better but flash still runs most sites that I need to go to on a daily basis.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_0_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8A306 Safari/6531.22.7)

I don't trust a tech analyst who doesn't know the difference between mini and micro USB.

Yeah, that\'s not going to happen.

The mini USB will be on it because of the recent EU ruling requiring USB on devices like the iPad.

If thinner mean lighter, this would be a good thing. The current iPad is surprisingly heavier than it looks, especially after using the new Kindle.

It would be great if one could connect a digital camera via USB to do some photo editing on the fly. Front facing camera is a must - if it works with Skype it would be even better.

My dream device would be:

  1. Light, thin, comfortable to hold
  2. Good battery life
  3. Good screen resolution (at least 200 dpi)
  4. Powerful enough to play HD movies
  5. HDMI connector
  6. USB
  7. Some sort of file management so one could easily send files between apps
  8. Great audio quality
:)

Micro-USB would be more likely, since that's what the European Union is pressuring all hand-held manufacturers to add as a standardized interface for charging purposes.

To meet the EU specs it need only be a means to power the hand-held -- it doesn't have to even be used for data in any way, so it doesn't need to upset any Apple "carts" in the way of 30-pin dock connectors. They can have both. :)

If the micro-USB on the new iPad, is at all related to the EU request, then there is still one problem besides which connector -- it's that the iPad draws more power than the typical typical USB port or charger can provide.

Hmm... Even if folks had to use the Apple branded micro-USB charger, it would still be a step forward since folks would only need one charger -- it would just have to be the Apple branded micro-USB charger.

Maybe the EU would be happy with that, since in the end it meets the "one charger for all handhelds" standard (despite needing to be Apple branded for higher power rating...or at least a compatible one).

I, for one, would see adding micro-USB as a happy medium, even if it required a special charger. Although, ultimately it would still be best if just any microUSB could at least POWER the unit, even if not able to provide enough amperage to CHARGE the unit.

In any case I would happily carry the Apple-branded charger. The nice to have w.r.t. using some other brand is for the case when someone borrows my charger without telling me and I don't notice until I'm already half a continent away from home. :-(

I would much rather have an SD reader then a mini usb port.

HDMI would also be nice, but not sure how often I would use it.

I thought the whole point of requiring the micro-usb ports on all phones was so that the manufacturers wouldn't have to include chargers with all phones. Therefore, leading to less waste. But the ipad isn't compatible with most phone chargers, at least not the current version due to the extra current. That is, if you want it to be able to charge in less than 24 hours.

Edit: Ishaner beat me to it

Just give me the same resolution as the current ipad, but with the retina display... so it is smaller and lighter.

Do you actually understand what 'Retina Display' means? It's a marketing term for a display with a resolution at or higher than 300 ppi. The pixel density of the display has very little bearing on weight, and no bearing on thickness.

The iPad 2 will not have a display of 300ppi, purely because there are no GPUs capable of driving such a resolution which could fit in a thin device.

Goldman Sachs analysts are claiming

What has this got to do with anything ? Someone tell me ? I am more inclined to believe the 7-inch rumors if any as it makes much more sense now that Apple is up against geniune competition w/ "BlackBerry and Samsung."

The mini USB if true, will still have a dock connector. My old Sony PDA had an adapter that plugged into the docking port of the PDA and the mini USB plugged into that. That is ALL Apple has to do.

That way the preserve their dock connector and comply with the EU.

I am for the mini USB drop the 30 pin...
It's an interesting situation to be sure, and there seem to be many pros and cons.

On one hand, the standardization of cellphone chargers is a very positive move for consumers. On the other hand, Apple has had the same 30-pin dock connector for nearly 10 years: it's a standard in it's own right. What about the customers who bought cars with 30-pin dock connector with the expectation that iPods would always employ it? And what about the airplanes?

A few questions remain. Will Apple redesign the iPhone to use miniUSB, or will they only include a 30-pin to miniUSB adaptor? If they transition, will they transition only the iPhone, or will they transition all iPhones, iPods, and iPads to miniUSB? Or maybe they'll include both.

If Apple transitions their entire product line to miniUSB, I'm going to miss the 30-pin dock connector, to be honest. It's so much easier to plug in.
