The dock connector is fully capable of handling USB connections. Apple even offers a camera connection kit with an SD card reader and USB adapter. Any limitations on those dongles are the result of Apple limiting their functionality in iOS, nothing to do with the USB capabilities of the dock connector.

I don't see them adding a USB port when the dock connector port can handle everything that a USB port could.

This^^ plus the fact that the iPad is not a phone and therefore not required to have a USB connector in accordance with the EU voluntary agreement. Additionally, you currently can't charge the iPad over a bog standard USB connection anyway as it requires a higher than standard voltage.

I would prefer Linux, and I'm beginning to think that Bibble Pro is an acceptable replacement for Aperture - and Bibble runs on Linux, Windows and OS X and it is MUCH faster than any competitor.

Then why the h*ll are you on here? If you prefer Linux, go to a Linux forum and complain about Apple there. I have yet to see you post one positive post about Apple or any of their hardware, so I wonder why the h*ll you come to a forum that is all about Apple and its wonderfulness.

I come here to read (and talk) about rumours of Apple and its great products.

The next version of the iPad (keeping on topic), I have no desire for a back facing camera (a la Dom Joly), and as for a USB port, I just hope it's for charging and syncing, not just an interface for other peripherals.

I'd bet on a new dock connector before a USB port, the current dock connector doesn't support digital video out which is why we don't have have HDMI adapters right now.

I'd expect the next iPad to support HDMI/displayport and LightPeak if it's ready to go. This means we're going to need a new dock connector. Apple would have to be dragged kicking and screaming into providing a separate micro USB port. They'll probably try to skirt the EU standards by providing an adapter.

HDMI out on iPad is not going to happen, thats what AirPlay is for. An iPad isn't meant to be connected via cable to anything. it's supposed to be mobile, a couch device.

Higher ampage not voltage! ;-)

Imagine a country that has fifty different types of electrical outlets. Imagine the same connector is sometimes used at 50 Volts, but another supplier puts 500 Volts on it. Sometimes 50Hz, sometimes 60 Hz, sometimes 200 Hz or even direct current.

Or imagine a world where every car maker has a different type of fuel and operates its own network of (incompatible) fuel stations.

In some cases it is not silly to force companies to make things compatible.

Funny, you seem to use the War of the Currents as a basis of government intervention, yet you fail to grasp that the War of the Currents was not resolved by a governmental agency such as the UN or the EU. What happened was simple, the FREE MARKET decided the best method(s) for the conduction of electricity. The methods chosen by the free market prospered, and the ones not chosen died (died for their offered purpose; not saying DC died of course)

True, there was government regulation after the marketplace had decided; however, it was the marketplace that decided that we have AC and not DC as a method of long distance electrically transmission. It was the market place that decided the frequency of AC. I could go on, but the point has been made.

The same thing should happen here. If consumers don't like the dock connectors, they buy other products, the revenue of Apple goes down, and Apple either responds to the will of their customers or they lose revenue and market share. Its pretty simple.

SD slot + Thinner/lighter + Higher Res display + Facetime + 3 Axis

Aside from the obvious evolutionary stuff and the all but certain Facetime camera, I think iPad could benefit from an SD slot to give it some more autonomy for those who don't use it with a computer.

USB will cause confusion because people will expect to be able to use all their USB devices with it. The USB adapter is used to import photos from a camera and an SD slot would satisfy that demand without introducing confusion with USB.

If Apple is forced to use USB for charging, I'd expect them to add a micro USB port next to the dock connector.

AirPlay doesn't work so well when you're on the road with your mobile device, unless you're planning on bringing your Apple TV (with an HDMI cable) and an Airport Express with you as well. If the iPad wasn't meant to be connected to anything, it wouldn't have a dock connector port.

HDMI and AirPlay isn't an either/or issue, the iPad can easily support both. The dock connector will need upgrades soon (to support LightPeak) anyway, I don't see why they wouldn't add HDMI support (through the new dock connector) while they were at it.

NO BACKSIDE CAMERA!!! This makes NO sense at all.

Let me suggest to you why it makes plenty of sense. Besides the obvious use in Face Time (as with the iPhone 4), it would especially be a wonderful tool for large-format photography on the iPad. Decades ago I used to shoot large-format film stills. There is NO COMPARISON between them and standard 35mm prints. So much more clarity and detail! Some of the cameras back then used film all the way up to 4x5 and 8x10 inches. Imagine this on an Apple iDevice with screen real estate the size of the iPads'! With a decent image sensor---at least 8 MP (and a flash unit of course)---coupled with the 'new' HDR technology, people could turn out some truly EXCELLENT large-format work. Forget about how to hold the thing---what a great viewfinder!---it will become natural very quickly. That's why it makes PLENTY of sense. I for one hope Apple implements it. :)

Why do you say USB is unlikely (to those who say that)??? This is basically a netbook; you should be able to plug flash drives in.

Heh, higher voltage would be BAD.

Why doesn't anyone make a bluetooth flash drive :D

Amazing that people are getting sooooo upset over the "rumored" mini USB port.

Oh noes! A USB PORT! Nooooooo!!!

Lord, it's truly amazing how crazed the overthetop fanboy gets over this. amazing!

Are you foks really going to lose sleep over this? Really?

Some of you seriously need to get outside once and a while.

i remember the announcement about the usb charging in EU but the ipad isn't a phone and so wouldn't have to do that would it?

Because the issue isn't just being able to plug in a USB drive but ALSO, and most importantly, being able to access it with the operating system once it's plugged in! The Apple iOS isn't set up for this (at least right now).

If Apple will use a USB in the next iPad, then they will put it in the right / left hand side; because, there are so many products that use the 30pin connector.

I agree but I think people are confused with the "Retina Display" tag. A Retina Display on the iPad does not necessarily mean 326 ppi. It did on the phone b/c that was the what it took for the pixels to disappear at a normal viewing distance. For the iPad, they will up it to whatever density is needed for the pixels to disappear during normal use of an iPad. What the number is I don't know, but I think we can all assume it won't be 326.
The target is simply double the current (linear) resolution for all apps to seamlessly 'adjust' to the new resolution. Maybe Apple already planned the resolution of the original iPhone such that a doubling would lift it over the 300 dpi threshold.
Doubling the iPad's resolution would 'only' lift it 264 dpi but for the iPad that might be enough for Apple to label it Retina.

I don't see apple moving away form the dock connector.

I do see them integrating a USB port (USB-A Female) as a host and not a device.

Also Apple seem to be keen on sticking a SD card slot into as many new devices as possible (all the latest MacBooks anyone?), almost like they want it to replace DVD as the de facto standard for removable storage.

Think of it as the old camera connector kit built into the device. We know there was a bunch of empty space in gen 1 so it is totally doable.

In the camera kit you have USB adapter AND SD card adapter...
But that USB adapter has 'CAMERA' stamped all over it making it easier for Apple to communicate that 'No, you cannot read USB sticks with it, a USB stick is not a camera.'.

Virtually no one's arguing that it shouldn't get a USB port. Most people are stating that it won't get a USB port for a variety of obvious reasons. There is a difference between those two.

USB is not happening

If it does, I can see it along side the Apple dock connector and not replacing it. While there is a lot of great things about USB, most devices of this class implement USB Device making it impossible for devices like this to control peripherals.

On elephant in the middle of the room is USB OTG. So far, not a single major device manufactures has supported it.

I think this report pretty much confirms what I've guessed for several months: the 2G iPad will get a higher resolution display, probably at minimum 1280x768 (or 1280x960 if Apple can decent large volume pricing).

Why go to a higher resolution display on a iPad more or less the same size as the current unit? The answer is simple: it will allow for native-resolution display of 720p HD videos of movies and TV shows downloaded through the iTunes Store to a local desktop/laptop computer and copied to the iPad or streamed a la Apple TV minus the need for an Apple TV box itself.
