LTE is reason enough for me to upgrade. I know many are pining for a complete redesign, but the current one is by far the best looking sexiest smartphone on hte planet in my opinion. No one comes close in build quality or materiel. The external antenna provides better reception than any previous model iPhone, and the glass front/back still looks so nice, even after 2 years. Part of me too likes the cool factor of a total redesign, but part of me says why change something so good. I could go for a 4in screen with higher resolution in similar form factor, LTE & quad core processor.

LTE isn't enough reason for basically anyone outside of the USA or Canada to upgrade though, if this is the only major change then I won't be upgrading from my 4.
Also, people said the same about the 3G/3GS but Apple came out of the blue with something no one expected, they need to do that again in my opinion; it's part of what made the iPhone 4 the best looking & selling phone out there, they need to recreate that with the next iteration of the iPhone IMO.

iPhone internal designations

Just for completeness, here are the model years and internal designations for all present and near-future iPhones:

iPhone (2007): iPhone1,1
iPhone 3G: iPhone1,2
iPhone 3GS: iPhone2,1
iPhone 4: iPhone3,1
iPhone 4S: iPhone4,1
iPhone (2012): iPhone5,1 (presumably)

Yeah, it sucks but you can't expect them to keep it forever.

If the micro dock connector does something other than making the connector smaller, I would say I would want them to keep it just the way it is. If it's not getting any faster, I figure it's not broken, why fix it?

No 4" screen would be a huge loss for Apple. It is the number one complaint I think

Who are you asking, enthusiasts or everyday users? I am with you here in that I truly feel the 3.5" screen is just too small now, but I am not sure the majority of iPhone users agree (or care).

Another iPhone that looks exactly the same then? People are gonna get bored, I am already. It won't look any different from my iPhone 4.

Because the only reason to buy a phone is for it's physical appearance? I don't get this mentality. It seems to be going around a lot lately. Don't get me wrong though, I like change every now and then.

This is the most realistic prediction. If Apple goes significantly higher than 3.5" they won't be able to keep the "Retina Display" designation without changing the resolution. By the fall, lower-power 28nm LTE chipsets will be readily available, and AT&T's network will be further built out.

My guess is that it will be called simply the new "iPhone."

New dock connector means my relatively new sound systems, 2 of them, will become obsolete. I hope when the iPhone 5 is released they offer the 4s cheap - but I just can't get by with 8GB (they way they downgrade the previous models to leverage people into the new ones). I am surprised they didn't do that to the iPad2 - $399 for 8gb.

Even at 16GB, the iPad 2 is tiny. iPad apps are getting bigger and bigger (2-3x what they were). If they went any smaller I think they would run into trouble myself.

that's exactly the problem of those on top ... why change something if it works and then all of the sudden BOOM someone else takes the lead.

just look at myspace, nokia etc.

But Apple shouldn't change just because everyone else is doing so. A larger screen, in itself, doesn't bring much to the table. It needs to be better, not just bigger.

I will absolutely switch to a Samsung phone in the next iPhone does not have a 4" or greater screen. The screen size it simply too small for a modern smartphone. It was fine a few years back but what people do with their iphone's and the apps that run on them has changed dramaticaly and if Apple refuses to change with the industry then I'm gone.

I can't imagine though that they won't - I'm about 75% sure we'll see a 4"or greater iPhone in the Fall.

the design is the most important part for me, its also the reason why i went for the iPhone and not for a Samsung in the first place. having the same design for 3 generations is indeed BORING. its not like u buy the same designed BMW twice just because it got a new engine either

i had the original xbox 360 but i loved how the new slim xbox looked so i got it, didnt care for the improved hardware at all it was just a plus ;)

Wirelessly posted

I've got 5 cables dispersed throughout places I frequent that I would need to replace if there's not some kind of adapter included for the new port. I've been looking forward to moving from a 4 to a 5, but not if it's going to require $100 worth of new cables. I really hope they don't make my existing cables obsolete with this next gen iPhone.

[...] Its not about making a 4" screen, its about making a 4" phone that's easy to use and good in your hands. If apple can do that then they have a chance at remaining on top of the phone design market, otherwise they are dead.

Apple loves guys like you. Especially if you are senior executives at Samsung, HTC, LG, and the other companies out there screwing Android phones together.

Because you, and they, are clueless.

Android phones simply can't compete with Apple in terms of the OS + app + ecosystem experience. (And that integrated, smooth experience is the hardest thing to get right, by the way. Good luck trying to Xerox that, Samsung.) So instead, they do the only thing they can. They try to fool ignorant consumers with hardware gimmicks.

If you can't make it good, make it big. Right, Sparky?

No, they should change because the nature and importance of smartphones has changed fundamentally. Everyone else realized this long ago. Apple is 2 years behind, as usual.

Still only 3.5"? I have an android phone with a 4.3" screen, it holds in my hand just fine. Don't know until you try.

+1 on this. My android phone has a 4.3" screen as well, and I"m able to control it with one hand very easily. I was hoping for a least a 4" screen, if not I guess my LTE phone, with a 4.3 inch screen will have to do.

Yes! Keep the small screen! I love having a phone and not a pocket book. :D

It is possible to increase the screen size without increasing the physical size and pixel density. How? Change the aspect ratio (1280 by 640, for instance).

The smartphone market has changed for one reason and one reason only, the iPhone. It's pretty silly to say that Apple is 2 years behind. But hey, if that's your opinion just take your business to another company.

Don't want/need a bigger screen...

Honestly... I think the screen on the iPhone is sufficient as is... in this case bigger would just be bulkier... not better... if I need a bigger screen... I'll pick up my iPad...

And for those that don't think LTE is a big deal... I have to say... you have to experience it to appreciate... Been using it on my new iPad... and so far, LTE is faster than my cable internet at home... its amazing...

I feel that they will go back to the iphone3 form factor. 3.5" or 4" screen, I'm okay with either.
I bet it wasn't feasible to fit that technology into the old form for the iPhone 4, 4s and now they can. I was sitting by a woman at the bar who had the iPhone 3, and couldn't help to think that Jobs would have wanted to go back to that, it's so beautiful. Another reason to think this is that the iPads have kept that same rounded back shape.

Screw it, the same size screen is a deal breaker for me.

2007 called, they want their screen size back. They need to at least get it to 4" to keep me interested.

The phone will need to be more compelling than this. I think it is time to nudge the size of the screen up a bit. A larger screen allows them a little more room to squish out the guts thus making it potentially thinner. I can almost guarantee Apple has done boatloads of studies and at the top of that list is making the screen a bit bigger.

The one thing they really need is that new Haptic screen tech that was going around right before iPad 3 was released. Thats a potential game changer, they could make marketing hay with.

I am thinking (if anyone cares :) ) that Apple will continue with the A5 in the next iPhone. Hopefully it will be smaller than the current A5 and more power efficient, that way the power savings can be pushed to the LTE chip and a 4" screen.

If Apple stays with a smaller screen it may mean they need to conserve power for the LTE chip.

I don't mind the same look, but if the iPhone 5 is just another spec bump and another software gimmick like Siri is, then there won't be much point in upgrading. My iPhone 4 can do everything the 4S can. Even without a Jailbreak, it still runs the latest iOS.

Apple are going to have to come up with something new before consumers get bored.
