Gruber is mocking the wsj article. I saw the wsj article last night and laughed at how bogus it sounded. The article doesn't say anything more than rumor. No hard facts. We'll see this answered in July.

Wouldn't having such a high res screen cannibalize a significant portion of iPad sales? and having the same speed CPU as the iPad as well?

I am confused as to why apple would do that unless they think that people aren't buying the iPad for those reasons.

Forward facing camera on the iPhone is such a dumb idea. Even dumber than forward facing camera on an iPad would be ( which, if you could get the tracking right ) would not have been a bad idea, just unnecessary. On the iPhone, it would be so lame.

I'd say a very high percentage of people who purchase an iPhone or will purchase an iPad will so because of the device, its size, what it can do, and not necessarily because of the screen resolution.

Wouldn't doubling the resolution display twice as much but half as small? That doesn't sound like a good thing.

Currently, the web is almost entirely usable in landscape mode without zooming in.

my thoughts exactly

Gruber enjoys pretending like he has "sources", but he doesn't. He's just a douchebag seeking attention.

Here, watch how easy it is to start a new iPhone rumor....

This just in from my homies at apple. I have been briefed with persons "familiar with the matter" that the new iPhone 4.0 will have add the following new features:
1) front facing camera - this will spin up the already broken record once more
2) double up storage capacity to 64 gigs - this one seems pretty easy to call
3) iphone for Verizon on a CDMA network - oh SH$t, wait that won't work, can't call and surf web at the same time on CDMA; oh well, I'll throw it in there anyways to seek attention
4) iphone gets multiple new colors kind of like the ipod nano - just wingin this one
5) iphone gets removable micro sd slot like imac - fat chance
6) new iphone software can order you pizza faster than Jimmy John's can order a sandwich - holding my breath on this one.

There you have it. Enjoy!

If there is a screen resolution increase, it will not be 2x but 1.6x.

Take a calculater and compute: 480x320 becomes 768x512

768 is the native width of the iPad (or height, depending on how you hold it).

Many webdesigners take 768px as viewport width to match the resolution on such devices.

But the current iPhone already has 160 ppi. If the increase would indeed be 1.6x, this means 256ppi. And not even big Bertha (T221) had this resolution.

Maybe someone before me posted this already. Didn't read through all the posts.

The only thing that I really want in the next iPhone generation is 64 GB of storage.

I wonder if this new phone will actually be able to delete calls individually for once?? It is either delete all calls and records or nothing. Complete BS for a smartphone. I hope the new phone can complete some basic call deleting functions from the call list.

Hd ?!

**** no. Apple, please do not name it Anything HD. It’s already being used in so many wrong ways.

It will be called iPhone 3DS

iPhone 3DS... you heard it here first ;).

the higher res screen is for their new notification system and home screen. extra pixels will allow them to create smaller/finer notification icons near the top.

the new iphone will NOT have a front facing camera. the video floating around of the new 4G iphone screen and that hole near the earpiece is a notification light.

Trying to hide something from the Mrs ??? :)

No, I know what you mean. I could have used that missing feature many times over... :D

There’s something to be said for naming a product clearly, and HD is indeed the most obvious name. It would probably by a good choice. But it has been done to death by so many others!

I hope the creators of the name”MacBook Air” have some more creativity up their sleeves.

Still, anything beats the name “3GS”!

I doubt iPhone HD will be the actual name. Of course, that is what I said about the iPad, and I turned out to be horribly wrong. Better than the "iPhone 3GSV2"

Either way as long as this update brings the iPhone up to par, or maybe even setting the bar again for smartphones, I can't wait to get it. Even if they DO release a Verizon version...I'm still sticking with AT&T as I have never had any problems. ;)

That and I just want to use irrational consumer behavior and spite VZ.

I often look onto the Display on my iPod Touch and think: It can really use 4 times the pixel density.

In all seriousness not everything that is technically doable makes sense. You can hardly see pixels as it is and Text is already pretty small, there is no need to make it even smaller.

They should rather concentrate on making the iPhone a little lighter and a little thinner. This along with some new Features like frontfacing camera & multitasking would be enough for me.
It's not going to be any smaller, the text and icons are just going to scale up. And the icons already set to 512x512 so they wouldn't get any smaller, on this higher res display they would be scaling down less than they do now. Look, the UI is going to be the same, the only difference is that things will look much sharper.

I thought it odd that the author of this post made commentary on Gruber. I'd rather have just facts. I'm no real fan of Gruber's style, but it is what it is and commentary about it should be left out of what should be news reporting. It's the line between reporting and blogging.

This isn't the NYT. Arn can say whatever the hell he wants, however he wants. It's his site.

Rumor has it that the gen 5 iPhones will be utilizing AMOLED.

And your probably right... but what Piss's me off is why 5th gen?
what not 4th Gen?

Other handsets has this new technology now, and they supply more handsets this Apple. This is just classic apple.

1st gen - released 2G when everyone had 3G
2nd gen - 2MP camera when everyone else had 5MP+
3rd gen - TFT screen when everyone else gets Oled.
4th gen - will be under the specs of the Samsung I8000.

So so sad.

You know, it may be a bit behind in this spec or that spec,
but even with all that the iPhone is still one sweet piece of Kit.

Oops, time for my Kool-aid.
