Considering all the leaked evidence of video recording and editing in the iPhone 3.0 beta, it's not really a stretch to predict that the next iPhone will offer long-requested video features. Still, Businessweek's Peter Burrows confirms that to be the case based on a source familiar with Apple's plans for the next iPhone.

In fact, Burrows suggests that video recording won't simply be an afterthought but a major feature of the new iPhone.
Evidently, shooting video is as easy as it is with a Flip, the ingenious device made by Pure Digital (recently purchased by Cisco). Then there’s an iMovie app that lets you quickly save the sections you want, right there on the phone itself. There may also be support for MMS, so the clips can be shared wirelessly with friends. And because of the iPhone’s relatively large screen, your friends don’t have to schlep to your PC or their Facebook page to see that video of your kids or your safari. Just hand them your iPhone.
Burrows even suggests it could be as successful as Apple's late, yet dominating, entry into the MP3 market with the iPod. An easy to use video recording, editing and sharing iPhone could be a breakthrough usage for the device -- allowing people on a large scale to quickly record and share videos without bothering to connect to their computer.

For what it's worth, MacRumors has similarly heard that the next iPhone will support Video recording and YouTube sharing which has been supported by evidence found in the iPhone 3.0 beta.

That would be awesome, there needs to be a slick editing interface and way to organize all of your clips

And with enough memory to easily store up to a few hours of video this will be a game changer. It could almost stand on its own as a video device, let alone one with WiFi and BT and cell phone connectivity built in.

Can't wait for June.

Will the iPod Touch 3.0 have this feature as well? I thought it was a mistake to leave out the camera on iPT 2. Will the camera remain a differentiating feature, or become the sine qua non for the entire platform (iPhone + iPod Touch)?

I think it will always be a differentiating feature between the two devices, at least for a while anyway. The iPod touch would be an amazing device with a camera I can not deny that. :)

A front mounted video camera too please...

Apps could take great advantage of it... Like Photo Booth, Skype, iChat etc...

How about external devices? Attachable camera w/video, maybe a USB camera connector thing like with iPods so you can view photos from your compact camera?

how about a flash and at least a 5 megapixel camera?

oh yeah... and swapable battery.

Even better than a flash would be a sensor that could take decent pictures in low light....

I don't really like pics using a flash...

And I'd rather longer battery life than a removable battery in a thicker iPhone.

For taking video....OK.

Editing? No thanks. I'd rather use one of those computers Apple sells for editing. Any editing you can do on an iPhone would be pretty lame anyway.

Why not add features that would actually be great, like a better sensor, better flash, or slightly higher pixel count (but not too high).

Cool

Oh yeah, this would be cool... It needs a killer app... If they did make it as ground-breaking as this suggests, then i guess we can perhaps forgive them for taking so long to put it in! Genuinely, friends of mine have taken great delight in ribbing me over the fact the iphone does "all this... and still no video recoding/MMS" etc, etc... No matter how much i show them all the other features they always mention the few things it's "missing"... So, as well as being fantastically useful (i have a young family so we're always videoing) it'll finally shut up the short sighted doubters!

If true, i'll definitely be getting a new phone this summer! Just hoping for 32gb to go with it....

It seems like Apple has indeed been listening to its consumers. I'm excited, not only to see these demanded features being added, but to see that a great deal of thought is going into their implementations. I almost can't wait for June; but I guess I have no choice :).

I just hope that they enable video recording in the iPhone 3G. I want to be able to record/upload videos on the go, it would make my phone that much cooler.

Agreed. Let's hope they let us iPhone 3G users record video as well. Otherwise I would be banging my head against the wall for making a purchase 1 year too early.

On the contrary, you should be happy. You've enjoyed the company of your iPhone 3G for almost a year now. Besides you'll be saying the same thing next year 'round this time anyway - you know it. :p

God I love convergence.

If this iPhone HD does HD video and all those features they will definitely have another big winner on there hands.

as successful as iPod? Don't think so. Have they seen the news recently with everyone sending in eyewitness footage shot on mobile phones? video is ancient news, so apple are just playing catchup. I don't see them doing anything to change that.

editing on a mobile will be a simple trimming job - anything else will be too complex so just do it on a computer.

HD video won't be shareable due to AT&T freaking out over data usage.

It'll be a great addition to the iphone, don't get me wrong - IMO way more useful than copy/paste. But game changing? breakthrough? I very much doubt it.

Why can't apple sites ever report something as being a useful addition and avoid unnecessary hyperbole?
