Name a few decent video recording phones. There are some great camera phones out there - the c905 from Sony Ericsson for example. But not great video. The Flip shows that loading directly is actually just plugging in a device. Rather than removing the memory from a device, and then putting it into a reader, loading the files, then putting the memory card back into the phone.

The N95 and N82 are probably the benchmarks for this sort of thing. Record, edit, upload. Dead simple.

This is good news but not a new feature as far as cellphones are concerned.

Man the rumors are flying today! I just heard that Snow Leopard will actually be on the iPhone.

That's not a rumor. That's just bull *****. Why would Snow Leopard be on the iPhone is Apple will release iPhone OS 3.0 in the summer?

If it's true, it's probably not going to be as groundbreaking as the iPod.

But it will refresh the iPhone more than anything else.

Flips and other pocket cams selling like hotcakes and if the iPhone can have a part of that pot of gold, it will be a massive seller.

The iPod was not all that groundbreaking itself. Just go back to the MacRumors archives and read the groanfest that took place after the announcement. It's packed w/ comments like "uh. Just what the world needs... another MP3 player." Plus the original iPod was big and clunky and prone to breakdowns.

What made the iPod groundbreaking was iTMS + iTunes. That is really when sales started flying.

Putting a "Flip" like camera on a phone is nothing huge either. BUT putting iMovie on a phone w/ a good res camera. Now that is a killer app that will slaughter the competition. The question is will ATT be OK with the huge bandwidth publishing videos is bound to use, or will publishing be WiFi/USB only.

The rumor is just probably tangled up. It is a rumor after all. We all know the iPhone OS is based on OS X. I'm sure there are components of 10.6 in iPhone 3.0 even though the actual OS X back end and GUI are not used. That is probably the original rumor which mutated into "10.6 will be on iPhone 3."

10.6 will probably be announced the same time as iPhone 3.0; i.e. WWDC, as far as that goes.

In a way, I'm rather upset about this. I was going to make an app that could do this (obviously just with video you've transferred to your iPhone, since the iPhone obviously can't record video). Now that Apple's doing it, however, they'll likely block any app I try to submit with "duplicate functionality." I could make an audio editing app, or a photo editing app, but those already exist. Video editing apps do not, which would have meant that I could get away with charging $4.99 or something :(

I've played with the Flip and it's pretty remarkable. Not many years ago spent over a grand on the smallest Sony handycam - and it was a hot item. The Flip HD for around 200 just blows that away. Having a similar camera in the iPhone would be remarkable and help support a bigger price tag.

Gotta be in the next iPod touch

I think it will always be a differentiating feature between the two devices, at least for a while anyway. The iPod touch would be an amazing device with a camera I can not deny that. :)

The more and more we get teased about Apple releasing huge features like this convinces me more and more that these will be in the iPod touch as well.

With developers gaining access to every tool available on the iPhone/iPod touch platform, there is no reason to segregate iPod touch users from the same features as the iPhone. Not including GPS and a camera for photos and video does not make sense any longer, as well as anything else they might have cooking.

To me, the only difference between the iPhone and the iPod touch should, and will, be the actual phone part, and always being connected to the internet. That should be the only distinction in the future, and enough of a distinction between the two products. The iPhone certainly doesn't need to rely on the camera and GPS to set itself apart.

Cheers,

DCBass

Not to sound mean, but what would be the point of importing video to the iPhone for editing purposes?

That said, if the next iPhone does have video capabilities I don't see Apple blocking any app just b/c it has a video editing capability. If it doesn't do more than whatever app they include, sure. But just as there are tons of photography apps, I suspect there will be lots of video apps too.

The reason video is not as prevelant as it could be is for two reasons.

1- getting good video quality prepared for the web is a huge pain in the ass. Im not talking about high quality, but good quality. You need to get out the camcorder, shoot, plug into your computer, transfer video, edit, encode....

2- current mobile devices produce crappy video at crappy frame rates.

If apple solves this they will have a hit.

the more news/rumors we get, the more excited I get!! I really can't wait for :apple:WWDC '09:apple:!! just 37 Days Left!! it'll be one Hell-of-a-Ride!!
I mean,
1. new iPhone (with a LOT of hardware changes) :D
2. iPhone OS 3.0 (with a whole lot more than 1.x and 2.x) :D
3. Mac OS X: 10.6 - Snow Leopard (THE best OS ever made!) :D
4. the Media Tablet (that'll "make history", just like iPhone did!) :D
5. Possibly iTunes (and Macs eventually) having BluRay Support! :D
6. did I miss something? hope yes, coz I want even MORE! LOL! :D

For taking video....OK.

Editing? No thanks. I'd rather use one of those computers Apple sells for editing. Any editing you can do on an iPhone would be pretty lame anyway.

Why not add features that would actually be great, like a better sensor, better flash, or slightly higher pixel count (but not too high).

I think I would rather have the option to use a pro camera for video and then transfer it and be able to edit it anywhere I take my phone. If only there was an iphone that could run full OS so we could use pro apps.

Exaaactly . . But I think the editing part would still be great if the iphone could truly handle it.

And with enough memory to easily store up to a few hours of video this will be a game changer. It could almost stand on its own as a video device, let alone one with WiFi and BT and cell phone connectivity built in.

Can't wait for June.

Yeah of is going to need at least 32 Gb. I don't think that 16 will be enough to record video and everything else that you may have on your phone.

pffft that's nothin. I just got done taking a hammer to mine. Why? Because the new one is going to to be soo good, I wouldn't even wish the old one on my worst enemy.

Hey what are we going to do without phones for 2+ months?

That last line made me laugh really loud at work... People looked at me funny.

A front mounted video camera too please...

Apps could take great advantage of it... Like Photo Booth, Skype, iChat etc...
I also imagine coding an app to track your phone in teh event of loss, snapping a photo of the assailant. :)
A removable battery would really come in handy with video usage :apple:
I agree, although I doubt highly this would happen.

*prays that Apple won't be b!tches and restrict many SOFTWARE features from the older iphones*

*realizes apple is a company wants to make a profit*

*prepares to slap apple in the face for being b!tches*
I think you mean, that you hope Apple also designs the new SOFTWARE to be backwards compatible with the old hardware, and doesn't consider such an act a wasted effort considering the new device's HRDWARE will be specifically built to do the new capabilities. There is a certain PAIN in trying to make every new feature (even software) backwards compatible, especially when you've improved the hardware to address key problems with earlier hardware (hitherto unknown).

What about the quality of the video

Neither of the two current iPhones on the market today have the best photo quality. The rumored new iPhone may have a 3.5 Mega pixel camera.

I am no expert by any means, but it sounds to me like the quality and resolution needed may not be there.

Adding this kind of video to an iMovie project may not result in a good experience due to quality, focus and low resolution.

Some of you maybe using a hacked iPhone with the video feature enabled, Can someone comment about the quality and resolution of these videos when used in combination with SD video from other sources?
Thanks

3.5 MP is a big enough resolution for 720p video. Nevermind the fact the megapixels does not equate to quality.

I'm not saying this rumor is true, but if I remember correctly, the Leopard based IPhone OS 1.0 was released before Leopard was.

When is June again?
I can't wait to see what they bring out with the iPhone. I can't wait for the big reveal, the big shock, the big expectations, the shattered hopes and dreams of millions of Apple fanboys and/or Microsofties.

Video recording and editing would be pretty amazing for an iPhone.

phone video

For me video is not a requirement. Obviously for most it would be a desirable feature. All of the video will fill up the bandwidth then next we will complain that the pipe is full.

Interesting times though.
