as successful as iPod? Don't think so. Have they seen the news recently with everyone sending in eyewitness footage shot on mobile phones? video is ancient news, so apple are just playing catchup. I don't see them doing anything to change that.
editing on a mobile will be a simple trimming job - anything else will be too complex so just do it on a computer.
HD video won't be shareable due to AT&T freaking out over data usage.
It'll be a great addition to the iphone, don't get me wrong - IMO way more useful than copy/paste. But game changing? breakthrough? I very much doubt it.
Why can't apple sites ever report something as being a useful addition and avoid unnecessary hyperbole?
Well, it will be likely as successful as the 3rd gen iPhone (we presume - the better sensor/larger optics could be put in the Touch - which would be interesting also). It is is likely to be on sale to China, amongst other new markets if it is the iPhone. So it's likely to sell well. You can't deny Flip had a part in changing things in their video recording area.
Apple is simultaneously playing catchup and also about to hit the area hard. Yes it'll be a simple trimming job - exactly! Simple!
HD video if we're getting it will be likely be shareable - you just sync with iTunes, or go to wifi - why would they have the Youtube upload otherwise?
They said the iPhone's camera wasn't a breakthrough - but then its usage as a camera on Flickr for example tells another story.
If anyone is unsure of what a phone that can be a video recorder in your pocket/hand can do - it's worth - then I'd imagine some of the G20 footage is one example - to do reporting.
Some interesting points though it's hedged slightly, but with some interesting phrasing -
I’ve spoken with a source that is familiar with Apple’s plans for the next iPhone...
Evidently, shooting video is as easy as it is with a Flip
Strange choice of words? - is as, rather than "maybe as easy" or "could be as easy"?
Same strange choice, a little later - saying "Then
there’s an iMovie app that lets you quickly save the sections you want, right there on the phone itself." but only saying " There may also be" support for MMS.
We
know MMS is in the SDK - so why the changes in confidence? Being more confident about an iMovie app, than MMS, which after all can be found on the Apple website.
If/when Qik jailbreak doesn't get updated/pulled it'll be a likely sign that they are gearing up for this.
It's nice for iPhone owners or prospective buyers but this is an old, well established feature on virtually every other smartphone out there both in terms of video recording and onboard editing software so a game changer it isn't. I'd also point out that other phones have removable memory so you can load it directly to PC or Mac.
Nice to see Business Week being way behind the curve again as, indeed, Apple are here.
Name a few decent video recording phones. There are some great camera phones out there - the c905 from Sony Ericsson for example. But not great video. The Flip shows that loading directly is actually just plugging in a device. Rather than removing the memory from a device, and then putting it into a reader, loading the files, then putting the memory card back into the phone.
Some additional thoughts
- Bonjour networking - peer to peer - you could share videos pretty darn easily. Viral video makers/advertising would love it. If the ad is good enough, people might share it.
- HTML 5 - Apple's shone it right in front of our face - HTML 5 Audio and video tags. You can with it, embed and add controls to multimedia in HTML. That's big news if done right. Apple has a way to push publishing not in Flash, but in open standards, and have extra features in QuickTime for Apple consumers. Having video recording creates content, helps push Rich Internet Applications. You can do some pretty cool stuff already with some HTML css js etc - Just look at what has been happening with Firefox 3.1, some of the open video demos e.g.
Chris Blizzard from Mozilla amongst others - good article

- Firefox went with Google for LBS. Another huge move that's in some ways seemingly being underplayed in regards the iPhone/Apple connection. Geotagged videos? Facial recognition in movies? Not too hard to see coming.
