as successful as iPod? Don't think so. Have they seen the news recently with everyone sending in eyewitness footage shot on mobile phones? video is ancient news, so apple are just playing catchup. I don't see them doing anything to change that.

editing on a mobile will be a simple trimming job - anything else will be too complex so just do it on a computer.

HD video won't be shareable due to AT&T freaking out over data usage.

It'll be a great addition to the iphone, don't get me wrong - IMO way more useful than copy/paste. But game changing? breakthrough? I very much doubt it.

Why can't apple sites ever report something as being a useful addition and avoid unnecessary hyperbole?

Hehe kill joy!

Man the rumors are flying today! I just heard that Snow Leopard will actually be on the iPhone.

Sounds like Apple to me, don't use an important feature like video recording if it isn't seamlessly integrated with the other services and storage capacity. A poor implementation in version 1 of the iPhone would have hurt the platform, now its just a feature that is late.

Unless it does HD recording or higher, I don't think anyone's going to care. You can shoot film-like images with DSLRs, and I'd rather carry that around if i'm planning on taking video.

Yes this rumor makes a lot of sense.

What doesn't make sense is why this hasn't happened already ;)

The Happening,

hey you seen that scene in the happening where the woman shows those people a video on her iphone her friend "sent her" i laughed the iphone cant do that lol, and now soon it will so looking forward to the next iphone think i will defo be upgrading, think i always will. cant see me using any other phone from now on tbh, hope their still rolling out updates in my 50s :D :apple: FTW!

That would be awesome, there needs to be a slick editing interface and way to organize all of your clips
Unless it's video chat, pass.

The last thing we need are more new one to one training for iPhone barking dog baby stroller moms. Bad enough you can't find anyone anymore that knows the pro apps. All the trainers should be called iLife iPhone trainers.

Geeeeh.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5H11 Safari/525.20)

I love the response to this news. Complaining on the Mac Rumors forums? NO! IMPOSSIBLE!

If it's true, it's probably not going to be as groundbreaking as the iPod.
But it will refresh the iPhone more than anything else.

Flips and other pocket cams selling like hotcakes and if the iPhone can have a part of that pot of gold, it will be a massive seller.

I thought the same thing when i saw that horrible movie.......

We didn't. Businessweek did.

arn

fair enough. Seems apple's halo spreads far and wide when even mainstream media are assuming they can do almost anything.

Raising expectations can backfire though.

Believe me, people will care.
If the quality is as good as on the Sony Webbie, Flips etc it will be a hot item.
The video will NOT be a substitute for camcorders or DSLR's, but more along the line of the pocket cams.

The video in the latest DSLR's is great, but still far from perfect.

It is so exciting, all this information coming through but now im scared i wont be able to get it, either O2 wont allow upgrades from my current iPhone 3g or else i just wont be able to afford it. Maybe i will be lucky as i did upgrade the very day the 3G was released.

Does anyone think it might be more like the first iPhone? where you buy it outright?

Totally agree with you, i used to change my mobile reguarly, at least twice a year but now no other phone can compare, i find it funny that there are so many other iphone like phones out there but i dont believe any can ever be as good.

Do you seriously think that Apple is making this feature to market towards people that also own DSLRs? Absolutely not.

And with enough memory to easily store up to a few hours of video this will be a game changer. It could almost stand on its own as a video device, let alone one with WiFi and BT and cell phone connectivity built in.

Can't wait for June.

It's nice for iPhone owners or prospective buyers but this is an old, well established feature on virtually every other smartphone out there both in terms of video recording and onboard editing software so a game changer it isn't. I'd also point out that other phones have removable memory so you can load it directly to PC or Mac.

Nice to see Business Week being way behind the curve again as, indeed, Apple are here.

i just sold my iphone 3G - since there is a new one coming and that is should be a quite solid update. the updated between the first iphone and the second was quite small - so my hopes are up in the clouds.

i hope for a 3" iphone nano and a multicore 3.5" iphone with a significantly better camera - maybe even front camera for chatting. obviously 32 gb flash...and a few extra yumyum :)

pffft that's nothin. I just got done taking a hammer to mine. Why? Because the new one is going to to be soo good, I wouldn't even wish the old one on my worst enemy.

Hey what are we going to do without phones for 2+ months?

Well, it will be likely as successful as the 3rd gen iPhone (we presume - the better sensor/larger optics could be put in the Touch - which would be interesting also). It is is likely to be on sale to China, amongst other new markets if it is the iPhone. So it's likely to sell well. You can't deny Flip had a part in changing things in their video recording area.

Apple is simultaneously playing catchup and also about to hit the area hard. Yes it'll be a simple trimming job - exactly! Simple!

HD video if we're getting it will be likely be shareable - you just sync with iTunes, or go to wifi - why would they have the Youtube upload otherwise?

They said the iPhone's camera wasn't a breakthrough - but then its usage as a camera on Flickr for example tells another story.

If anyone is unsure of what a phone that can be a video recorder in your pocket/hand can do - it's worth - then I'd imagine some of the G20 footage is one example - to do reporting.

Some interesting points though it's hedged slightly, but with some interesting phrasing -

I’ve spoken with a source that is familiar with Apple’s plans for the next iPhone...

Evidently, shooting video is as easy as it is with a Flip
Strange choice of words? - is as, rather than "maybe as easy" or "could be as easy"?

Same strange choice, a little later - saying "Then there’s an iMovie app that lets you quickly save the sections you want, right there on the phone itself." but only saying " There may also be" support for MMS.

We know MMS is in the SDK - so why the changes in confidence? Being more confident about an iMovie app, than MMS, which after all can be found on the Apple website.

If/when Qik jailbreak doesn't get updated/pulled it'll be a likely sign that they are gearing up for this.

It's nice for iPhone owners or prospective buyers but this is an old, well established feature on virtually every other smartphone out there both in terms of video recording and onboard editing software so a game changer it isn't. Name a few decent video recording phones. There are some great camera phones out there - the c905 from Sony Ericsson for example. But not great video. The Flip shows that loading directly is actually just plugging in a device. Rather than removing the memory from a device, and then putting it into a reader, loading the files, then putting the memory card back into the phone.

Some additional thoughts
- Bonjour networking - peer to peer - you could share videos pretty darn easily. Viral video makers/advertising would love it. If the ad is good enough, people might share it.
- HTML 5 - Apple's shone it right in front of our face - HTML 5 Audio and video tags. You can with it, embed and add controls to multimedia in HTML. That's big news if done right. Apple has a way to push publishing not in Flash, but in open standards, and have extra features in QuickTime for Apple consumers. Having video recording creates content, helps push Rich Internet Applications. You can do some pretty cool stuff already with some HTML css js etc - Just look at what has been happening with Firefox 3.1, some of the open video demos e.g.
Chris Blizzard from Mozilla amongst others - good article here

- Firefox went with Google for LBS. Another huge move that's in some ways seemingly being underplayed in regards the iPhone/Apple connection. Geotagged videos? Facial recognition in movies? Not too hard to see coming.

My Opinion

Some were talking about the phone shooting 720p. I kinda doubt it. My 3G iPhone shoots a 1600x1200 image once every three seconds. I highly doubt the new one will be able to shoot 30, 720x1280 images per second unless they made some incredible strides.
Apple doesn't need to do that much to blow the competition away. If the phone could do a CLEAN 640x480 (or somewhere near in pixel count but in 16:9 ratio) with decent sound and good exposure it would beat any cell phone video camera. The video I've seen from cell phones until now is absolutely horrible although I have only seen video from 4 or 5 different phones.
Anyway, my.02

basically all the new Nokia N Series phones and the latest Samsung, but i guess u dont even have most of these in the states :p
