When they did lightninig back in 2012 USB C must have been on the radar even if it wasn't ready.

Anyway hoping it doesnt as I think most have many lightning cables lying around these days. It pains me to even look at the 30 pin these days

I'm not sure about USB-C yet, but the EU has laws supporting USB, particularly mini and micro USB in smartphones. They have allowed Apple to keep their proprietary connectors as long as they include a micro-USB adapter with every iPhone sold in EU countries.

So not only would Apple be fighting the other tech companies if they tried to mess with USB-C standards, but they would also have to deal with one of the large government entities that they have to work with. Just because they're an American company doesn't mean they can ignore the laws of other countries they do business in.

The one wrench I'll throw in this is the cable Sony uses to charge a DuelShock3 controller with a PS3. It's USB to mini-USB but somehow only that cable will charge the controller. A standard USB to mini-USB won't charge the controller. So I'm not sure how Sony can mess with a standard while Apple has to include an adapter to its proprietary cable, but there you go. Although I believe Apple was made to include the adapters within the last few years while the PS3 has been out since 2008 or 2009.

That's not true. I've got a PS3 and use regular mini usb cables. Works.

USB-C port for the next iPhone? It could replace the lightning port for charging.

I hope so. I would love to be able to connect flash drives and additional storage to the phone or iPad when needed.

USB-C doesn't mean  will allow flash drives or storage to function. Look at how they locked down NFC.

Apple use a standard connection for iDevices? Doubtful. They haven't done that since the original iPod had FireWire and the first iPod Shuffle had built-in USB out. It's been 10+ years and only two devices out of many others.

How do you think the new MacBook is powered? USB-C standard. ;)

Yes, and USB ports have been on Macs for years. But it's been years since a standard port was used with an iDevice, and Apple has never put one in an iPhone or iPad. Why would they change now when they have such control over accessories?

Yes, Macs have had USB ports for years, but Macs have been powered by proprietary charging cords up to this point. This new Mac is the first one that I can think of in the last decade that is using a standard charging cord.

So, what is next for USB-C? Considering Apple had heavy engineering participation in developing the USB-C standard, I imagine they will be using it in everything. Additionally, the European Parliament handed down their ruling on the issue of mobile chargiing standards and they say that manufacturers, including Apple, will have to use a standard charger by 2017. This timeframe lines up quite nicely for  to move to a completely new design with the iPhone 8, complete with a standard USB-C charging cable, in mid-2016.

P.S.  is already selling 3 cable accessories for the new MacBook (and they have the  premium pricetag already included).

The only problem I have with USB is the vulnerability that allows someone to replace firmware on USB devices with malware based code. There was a lot of articles about this a short while ago, and now I hear nothing about it...

What I read, from various sources, was that the whole standard would have to be revised to protect the firmware from being replaced. I'm assuming signing of the code.

Does this concern others? I know I am. All those $3 USB chargers sitting on the counters at 7-11, gas stations, and auctions on eBay, have the potential to cause a lot of concern.

Will future iPhones include USB-C?

Now that I see all these companies coming out with adapters for the new USB-C plug, I fear the future of iPhones may start to include USB-C.

Thoughts?

I wasn't aware the the EU was requiring standard ports after a certain point. That certainly changes things. All Apple has to do currently is include a free adapter.

lol @ people thinking Apple would even entertain the possibility of putting usb-c on their idevices and give up the millions from selling overpriced lightning cables and adapters.

Apple wouldn't be able to sell overpriced proprietary cables and adapters if they were to switch to usb-c

You nailed it. 90% of Apple's profits come from their proprietary cables

 is already selling 3 proprietary USB-C cables for the new MacBook at prices well above the standard. So, that arguement holds no water.

Take a look at Apple's website and see: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MJ1L2AM/A/usb-c-vga-multiport-adapter

I'd love apple adopting a standard charger for their ios devices like literally every other smartphone maker in the planet (don't come at me with exceptions, the overwhelming majority have used usb standards since forever). That is but a pipe dream.

It's been three years and in still not reaping any of the wonderful benefits of the Lightning cable that people on here ripped into me for saying was a complete waste. All lightning has done is increased my expenses on cables. That's it.

For me, the 5 series was thin enough. I don't need my phones getting thin enough to slice bread. Or cut up my coke. Although the glass screen would be kind of handy for that.

There is no reason for Apple to adopt USB-C in the iPhone/iPad.

The EU disagrees with you. And that is a big reason for Apple to adopt hardware they helped engineer on all their devices.

Can someone explain the usb-c cable?

Higher data transfer speeds
Power can go both to a device and from a device (i.e. it can power the macbook and then the same port and cable can be used to power an iphone from the macbook)
It can be plugged in, in any orientation a la the lightning cable. There is no upside down.
