I don't think I'm asking or too much at all
I'm not sure sure Apple's (or anyone with an installed base of 1M+) able to develop, test, QA and rollout major updates monthly, but we'll see. Definitely would be cool if they could! :)

I know you're not thrilled with the Wi-Fi store. I actually don't think it had anything really to do with the iPhone and is only there because it can be. I think Apple designed it to give the iPod touch something to do with its Wi-Fi, in response to the Zune only being able to use its Wi-Fi to "squirt".

I'm getting a bit frustrated with the updates simply because the hardware is capable of video and MMS yet we don't even get a mention of when we'll be getting it or IF we'll be getting it. Those are fairly minor updates that Apple could easily make, yet we still don't have the ability to use these features that are extremely basic.

In Excel, =NETWORKDAYS("06/29/2007","09/18/2007") shows that there's been 58 working days since the iPhone launch (and that doesn't even consider July 4th or Labor Day).

During those 58 days, Apple's launched the iPhone touch and has been working on launching the iPhone in Europe.

My guess is those two events tied up a bunch of iPhone resources. Maybe now Apple will be able to work on some functionality that you like?

I'm still not sure what you were expecting (update-wise) 60 work days after launch?

I'm not holding my breath as I think all the iPhone developers are *back* working on Leopard to meet that release date. I'm not expecting anything new/good until some time after October and Leopard is out.

Agreed. They're gonna roll out features to keep selling this thing. I'm doubtful we'll see hardware upgrades every 4-6 months like other cell phones makers do. The only upgrades I see in the future is larger flash storage and 3g. That's over a two year period. Maybe a faster processor or improved battery life and a different form factor/casing.

The iPhone is extremely new...so be patient. If what it could do now wasn't enough for you, you wouldn't have bought it. If and when they put out an SDK (next years WWDC) then this thing will be an absolute must have for technology folks.

I think it is perfectly reasonable that people are expecting more from Apple. The phone was hyped to all hell before launch and as some have already cited, Apple, AT&T and Google all insinuated or were flat out qouted that there were going to be bringing continuous updates and added functionality. So far, nada! Ringtones, yippie.

http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/07/05/29/more_google_apps_on_their_way_to_apples_iphone.html

I would say that Apple has made many mis-steps since the launch (activation issues, premature price drop, no SDK-3rd party apps, ringtone debacle) and the secrecy revolving around the iPhone is absolutely ridiculous. People like to know what is what.

The demi-gods here are so quick to troll in and tell someone that they are stupid or a whiner for expecting what they were told. I think update 1.1.1 should add some empathy for old school Apple addicts who only post because they like to see their writing on the web.

If forums aren't a place where people can moan or become informed then what is the point of having them at all? Zealotry is bad no matter how great you think Apple is, their only motivation in making great stuff is to get your money. It's your duty as a consumer to question and keep them honest.

How about some constructive dialog or at least sharing some credible information to back up your statements instead of just being a corporate cheek kissing hater.

Wow...looks like the iSheep are out in full force today. Apple setup the accounting of iPhone sales specifically to be able to add additional functionality on a frequent basis over the two years. Since the launch of the iPhone we've seen NO NEW functionality added whatsoever.

I think it's fair to be upset all we've been given are Ringtones and soon the WiFi iTunes store which are essentially just more ways for Apple to take your money. Maybe I was mistaken but I bought the iPhone with the expectation Apple would build on it in the future and at least start off soon.

Yes, and hacking it to run 3rd party apps that in most cases are useless (too premature and a lot are just proof of concepts) is definitely the right solution.

Excuse me but where did Apple state in that comment that they would offer new features 2 months after the device was released. Maybe I'm just missing that part. You should be happy you get any updates at all. What other cell phone makers provide software updates for their phones and as easily as the iPhone.

I don't really want Apple to add any new major features until they iron out what's already there. I'm glad the WiFi store is coming out, but I don't want anything else until Apple adds MMS text messages, video capture, a separate incoming and outgoing recent call list, and takes away the bugs in Safari and iPod.

My point of view is this.

I've been using Windows Mobiles phones since they were called PocketPC Phone Edition and I had to win them on eBay UK and have them shipped to the US because none of the US carriers offered them.

Three years ago, one of my work duties became to install and maintain a BlackBerry Enterprise Server.

So I have a lot of personal experience with those two products, which I personally consider to be in the same league as the iPhone.

In the not-quite three months since the iPhones launch, I've seen more iPhone bug fixing from Apple than I used to see on a Windows Mobile device in an entire year. Same with BlackBerry. It'd take them 5-6 months SOONEST to get a new firmware out for a device. And then you're still at the mercy of your carrier as to if they were going to release it.

And with the 1.1.1 update right around the corner, I don't think I'm kissing some corporate cheek by being satisfied with what I've seen so far.

I'm unaware of any other phone manufacturer that is pumping things out as quickly as Apple is for their iPhone. This is why I can't believe that some folks are honestly disappointed that things aren't going even faster. These people would be dying of strokes if they had Windows Mobile devices and were waiting impatiently for updates!!!! But I guess they haven't been down the same road I have, so their perspective is totally different.

For all the people saying that we're lucky we get any updates at all as no other cell phone manufacturers do this, consider the fact that Apple shipped the iPhone missing many basic features and functionalities.

If I bought any other phone and it was lacking the ability to send and receive MMS messages I'd be pissed as I'm pretty damned sure that even the free phones have this capability. In fact, I've not heard of any phones that weren't black and white that can't send and receive MMS messages.

As well, the reason any other company can wait longer to put out updates (e.g. for BlackBerry's or Windows Mobile) is because the things are feature complete from the beginning. The updates only address bugs and add additional features, not provide the most basic functionality that the iPhone is STILL missing.

Agreed. They're gonna roll out features to keep selling this thing.

Exactly what I was thinking. After the price cut, sales surged again. They got the demographic of "I'll wait until the price is lower". When sales start to slow down again, then they'll get the demographic of "I send to many MMS messages to get the iPhone". Then when sales slow again, they'll work on the "It's not corporate enough" demographic, then when sales slow down again, they'll get the "PUSH email" demographic, then when sales slow down again, they'll get the "cut/copy/paste/finder" demographic, and so on. Eventually it will have all the functionality of a laptop.

Aristobrat, my post actually wasn't directed towards you, I should have quoted. I actually find your posts amusing, informative or both. You rock.

I have also used and own s60, blackberry and ppc's and I definitely agree that Apple's implementation of updates is by far the easiest and even though its only been out shy of 3 months the most frequently updated. I think the iPhone is great, my only real contention is that it seems as if Apple is going to nickel and dime me for the functionality that comes standard or through 3rd party support with the manufacturers mentioned.

The fact that Steve has acknowledged that he is willing to play the cat and mouse game was dissapointing. He didn't even care to know which role he was going to play, sounds like hardball.

If you think people are whining or upset now wait till the update disables your ability to sync with iTunes if you have unlocked your iPhone. I wouldn't doubt if Apple is waiting 14 days from the release of iUnlock just to stick it us. These forum servers might burst into flames!

Its been out what 2-3 months and you've got

-extra nice finishing touches (double tap, closed captioning)
-complete new apps (iTunes wifi and to a lesser extent the Starbucks thing), -bug fixes
-improved keyboard and language support as well as the usual performance increases.

Not bad going IMO.

That iPhone at the UK event posted on Engadget sure looks mighty workable to me. This means that 1.1.1 was already compiled and put on that phone. I might be going out on a limb here, but since we don't have the update, even though a completely functional version exists, I'm willing to bet they are adding in some additional features to further separate the iPhone from the touch and will take their time (until the end of the month). Plus, our version has to be different from the UK version, right? If anything will be different, the temperature icon will not read 23c, which is 73f. Also doubting if there will be options to choose carriers like in the Engadget photos.

TV-out support was one of my major hopes and I'm glad to see it come. I just wonder why it wasn't in the release firmware? Apple is working on features over time. Between the announcement and the release they came up with the Youtube app. I'm willing to bet we won't get anything truly revolutionary before winter, but who knows. Maybe some games, perhaps a basic mobile iLife or Google Docs to replace the notes. Wasn't there also some hint from Apple awhile back about a Yellowpages app too? Only with time.

They may also be delaying release of new apps so they can engineer a better way for letting people arrange and organize home screen icons. I'd love to see a zooming type tray like in OSX.

Yes, I'm sure the update will be amazing, but we don't quite have it yet.:(

My iPhone is the first Apple product I have ever bought. Since buying it, and then joining this forum, I can't believe how so many people are so forgiving of Apple. It's almost like some mindless sort of trust that most people here have put in Apple. Some of the comments by fans that just make me wonder what they are thinking:

"You knew what you were buying when you bought it, im afraid if you got you iPhone for what it could be and not what it is, you wasted alot of money"

"You might want to start trying to accept the possibility that maybe nothing major will ever be added to the iphone v1, just maintenance releases."

"Hey, at least you have a phone that gets updated at all. Every other phone ive had never got updated. Ill take maintenance releases anyday."

"I think tooo many people are expecting toooo much toooo early..."

"Some of you people need to relax, you guys act like apple is your life and there is no reason to live until you get this update. It will come when it come, till then relax and use your iPhone in all it's glory."

"It'l come when it comes....until then....just sit back stop whining and wait your turn."

Does anyone ever read this stuff before they post it? What these people are saying is they are happy with mediocracy. I switched over from a Treo 700W, and I miss lots of apps I had on it. I miss lots of things I could do with it, that I can't on the iPhone. I have untill the 22nd to port my number back over to Verizon, and I'm walking a thin line of what I'm going to do.

I decided to get an iPod thinking it would be problem free, but that wasnt true either. Between the phone, the rebate debacle, the problem exchanging my iPod and the lack of support, I'm not sure I want to buy any more Apple products.

Why are so many of you so forgiving of Apple when you should be expecting them to be held to a higher standard? I read here so much how MS products are so inferior, but I'm not seeing much of a difference here.

i agree. it is silly it still lacks MMS, ichat, voice vialing, video capture etc... it's a $600 phone for crying out loud! it's not OK to not have these things. i bet you see this thing flop in europe. they dont have the loyalty and love of apple over there like we do in the US. once people find out it doesnt do things their current phones do, they will pass on it. no 3G, no MMS, no voice dialing, no usable speakerphone ...

i mean, dont get me wrong, i love the phone. it's the most fun i've ever had using a phone, but there is a lot of it that frustrates me. i cant believe apple hasnt added MMS in advance of the european launch. that, to me, is amazing. itunes wifi? who really needs to download music on the fly? do people really get that desperate to get a song?
