The MBA 11 is already so close to "retina" quality at normal viewing distances that my guess is that more customers would prefer a longer battery life or possibly even a slightly lighter weight, over a just barely perceivable better display.

I LOVE magical hamsters! how DARE they not include them?! T_T
It will be a total let down for me if there aren't magical retina hamsters (thanks Cheerwino).

Don't forget the unicorn-based system on a chip.

I thought that the battery would be made out of unicorn horn?

----------

All HD TVs are already Retina, so the cost? Same as now...

No, they aren't unfortunately. 1920 x 1080 is not "retina". The hamsters disapprove this post.

Don't forget... "Retina" is PPI and distance.

It's not just the number of pixels.

I'll let Steve explain:

Meh I like seeing GPU/CPU updates rather than retina everything.

Whats the next retina rumor the ipod nano?

Most gaming SLI setups use what is called AFR, this is when each CARD (not core) renders all odd or all even frames.

see here for info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scalable_Link_Interface#Implementation

Note: I don't think the iPad3 is using SLI type tech! [correct me if i'm wrong]

For a game you would use AFR. You wouldn't use that on the desktop though.

I don't know exactly how the iPad does what it does, but I'm pretty sure the iPad isn't just raw rendering 2048x1536.

Magical hamsters.

nah, unicorns

So i'm guessing from all the reading yesterday that no professional or corporation has any of these right ? There is no ethernet port.

But I agree that it's going to take some beefed up graphics power to support the 13" Retina model.

um, it's called a dongle. businesses also have wifi.

Please have USB3.0 and an option for 8GB of RAM.

why not 6 if it's non-standard Ram anyway? two pairs of 3GB would be fine.

To be honest on my current air I would rather just have increased CPU/GPU power and battery life rather than a retina display.

The 11" Air already has the highest DPI of all other mac notebooks currently available.

Ahh, of course. I forgot the viewing distances involved when watching a TV. However, you don't sit that far away from a monitor.

But I was replying to a post about TVs. So yah, at 7+ feet away 1080p is Retina.

If it's already so close, why not give it a little extra push and only worry about battery and performance here on out?

I'm days away from finally buying that 13" 256gb MBA I've had my eye on for quite a while. Been holding out to see if the refresh is worth a longer wait. Retina doesn't sell me alone. If we see 8gb RAM and 512gb SSD, then I'll wait. But I'm betting the 4gbRAM/256SSD is more than enough machine for my needs.

Retina iPod Shuffle man, that's where you'll get your mind blown.

... what? you can't see the difference?

$677 iPad 3 + 4g or $999 2012 MacBook air w/ retina display, ivy bridge , and 64 gb SSD. Sorry iPad but it's back to best buy you go

I was thinking this too but just realized that the Macbook Air still needs to support retina for when you hook it up to larger displays. A Macbook Air connected to a retina Cinema Display would be fabulous.

I know I'll get down voted for this, but oh well.

I don't see why Apple can't consolidate the MBA & MBP lines into one single MacBook line. Have 11", 13" & 15". Drop the 17". MBA form factor. USB3. Retina display. No ODD, no Firewire, no ethernet. SSD stick drive.

As for iMac, drop ODD. Maybe drop ethernet & Firewire. Gain retina display.

Drop Mac Pro entirely. Port Xcode to the iPad.

I'm not saying I like this way of business, but I find it goes w/ Apple business philosophy. Very simple product lines geared more towards consumers. I have a 17" MBP at home that I enjoy, but from a business perspective, Apple should focus on what gets it the most profits.

I used to think this would be a solid idea, but as a former MBP user turning into an MBA user, I have to say the markets are different enough to warrant 2 lines. The MBP users want and are willing to pay for extra functionality and a certain robustness in the design, while MBA users are focused almost strictly on form factor, longer battery life, and lighter usage capabilities.

To merge the 2 lines would be upset both camps more than necessary.
