Next MacBook Air Update to Focus on Retina Displays Too?

I know I'll get down voted for this, but oh well.

I don't see why Apple can't consolidate the MBA & MBP lines into one single MacBook line. Have 11", 13" & 15". Drop the 17". MBA form factor. USB3. Retina display. No ODD, no Firewire, no ethernet. SSD stick drive.

As for iMac, drop ODD. Maybe drop ethernet & Firewire. Gain retina display.

Drop Mac Pro entirely. Port Xcode to the iPad.

I'm not saying I like this way of business, but I find it goes w/ Apple business philosophy. Very simple product lines geared more towards consumers. I have a 17" MBP at home that I enjoy, but from a business perspective, Apple should focus on what gets it the most profits.

Agreed on all points but I don't see Apple dropping ethernet ports from desktops.

BTW, here is my rendering of the new Macs. Notice how slim the new MBP is especially.

Retina display is dandy and all, but I'd still like to see a bigger screen on the 11in (perhaps 12-12.5in) and a smaller bezel on the 13in (or perhaps bump to 13.5-14in)

Let's make the 11" screen 13 inches! Then we can bump the 13" screen to 15 inches! And then for the 15" screen.... well no actually let's keep the 15" screen at 15 inches...

MS Paint?

This is the one device I don't want retina in. I would rather keep a better battery length, and see a cheaper price point so that I could easily convince my family to adopt OSX.

The new MacBooks will have a better battery chemistry (liquid metal?) to handle the retina bad-boy.

I don't think the iPad is powerful enough to run Xcode. And anyway, it lacks screen real estate and a keyboard to make that a good machine to run it on.

And on the drop Mac Pro point. For the market it serves, no other Mac is a suitable substitute for many. I'm not in the market for one, but only because it is too expensive. I wish they did a user configurable Mac that wasn't server component based.

Size and cost.

Many pro users and gamers need lots of not-too-expensive storage (a big HD) and/or a higher-end GPU (hotter, thus needing more heat dissipation and battery volume), which are too big to fit in an MBA, as well as raising the build cost (thus cutting Apple's profits if not "Pro" priced).

But the slimmer cheaper-priced MBA sells a ton of units also.

12in, 14in, and 15in screen sizes are quite common. An 11in MBA chassis with 13in would be a god send. Not too sure why you're being so facetious

how are they going to power that in something so thin?

At least people can't complain about the lack of Ethernet here.

USB3 should be in all the new laptops, what's to stop them?

You shouldn't take any of this stuff too seriously, especially not something as asinine as a company still debating the inclusion of usb3. If they intend to use it, they're working on stable drivers already. They aren't going to just decide at the last minute and pull an all nighter on the driver stack :p. This is rumor mongering more than real reporting, but you should already know that.

To me the 2011 screens are retina to begin with. 1440x900 resolution on a 13" screen is nuts.

At 22'' viewing distance (30 degree viewing angle), it makes 50 pixels per degree. iPad 3rd gen, at the same viewing angle of 30 degrees (14.5'' viewing distance) makes 68 pixels per degree.

So, 50 ppd vs 68 ppd at 30 degree viewing angle.

Apple's Retina Display means they are also IPS panels? Heck yes!

Great comment. Lovin' the display resolution on my MacBook Air, but photos just don't have the vibrancy that you see on the iPad or iMac, with their IPS panels. Resolution isn't everything . . . .

if i get the OP i try to provoke discussion, don't worry I don't believe anything here till it's everywhere. I am more than aware that i'm macrumors.com.

Why is this on the Front Page but not on the "Mac Blog" page? Does MacRumors even ATTEMPT to organize this site anymore? WTF?

I don't want retina on a laptop. It's a gimmick. The MBA screen is already plenty sharp for the distance at which it's used, and this is going to result in big hits to battery life and graphics performance. And even if they have new graphics and better batteries such that they can say nothing has gotten worse since the last generation, just think what would have been possible in terms of performance and battery life without a retina display.

Crisp screens are great, but they come at a price, and in the case of the MBA, I think the cost/benefit is not there.

Looking good. I like the new port layout that you've designed there.

What should go on the front page then if there is a Mac Blog and an iOS blog? Nothing?
