That MacBook you ordered is a nice computer. Why would you be upset about an update 4-6 months down the road anyway? Use your new computer for a year, sell it, then pick up a new one 2 revisions from now, maybe even 3.

But seriously, the one you just ordered will handle the tasks you ordered it to do pretty much as good as the next revision will.

And I'm willing to bet the macbooks don't go aluminum. Not at their price point. The gap is narrowing between the macbook and the macbook pros, and there needs to be distinctive difference between the two. One of those is the casing.

Just kidding.... (I took a "time-out")...

If I kept waiting and waiting, I'd still be using my first HP 486 Laptop with Windows 95... and my Mac Classic...

Any folks know (in a rough sense, obviously) the performance difference between Penryn and Montevina? I'm assuming it will be minor but not insignificant, but am curious (as I just bought a BlackBook off of Amazon). Not going to cancel my order or anything, just curious.

only 3 months away - i can wait :)

i really cant see myself pulling the trigger on a 4 year old design

I think im going to wait off for the next one, for whenever that may be... sometimes just tells me to wait for the next update...

Xcellent. I'm pretty stoked about it. I thought this current update was decent. My only beef is I want to see, new GPUs in the MBP.

Are you kidding me? The forums are ALWAYS saturated with "Should I buy now or wait?" threads...
its the nature of the game. everyone plays this in all walks of life. I for one am waiting for a 3600M option. I need that for what I do :) how many more tuesdays till then? LOL

New keyboard this time plz ;)

That may be when I finally upgrade, as the Powerbook will be finally paid off by then *cough*

I hope you aren't calling for a change in the MacBook Pro keyboard - it's the last really good keyboard Apple makes.

Yes, that would be nice, as would Blu-Ray. Now that the HD wars are over, Apple needs to get Blu-Ray in ASAP.

Save for a few of the Pro users who need to burn Blu-Ray disks, I don't believe the market is there fro Apple to begin including Blu-Ray drives. I don't believe Blu-Ray will catch on with mainstream, nor do I think Apple believes it will either (death of HD-DVD be damned). I think Apple is banking on the future being direct download and streaming content from the internet (Apple TV, etc.). I recall some passing comment Jobs made while releasing iLife '08 last year about using iDVD; he implied that no one really does that anymore it's all about posting directly onto the internet now. Whether that is an accurate statement or not is mostly irrelevant - if the CEO and Big Cheese of Apple does not believe in hard disk video form factor, it would not surprise me if he directs his company to avoid it's inclusion in Apple products. I think you are more likely to see an adaptable 3rd party drive that Apple "recommends" but that's just a call.

(goes to cancel refurbed MacBook order...)

Item: MacBook 2.2 Black, Refurbed
Status: Shipped.

  , angry, angry, angry...

And if the new MacBooks in June are Aluminum and look like the MacBook Air...

(runs off crying.....)

Oh please. If this makes you angry, you should never buy a computer. Ever.

What I'm interested in is the Mac Mini will get updated soon. I'm sure the iMac will get updated in the next month or two. But how long will the Mini run that processor.
Agreed. Intel's pushing the chips comprising the Montevina platform will either force a refresh of the Mac Mini or kill it off. The Mac Mini is the only Mac left currently being sold that is still using the Calistoga chips from the Napa platform.

EDIT:
I just found this indicating that the chips for the Napa platform will be completely phased out by the end of the 2nd quarter of 2008, and the Santa Rosa platform will be completely phased out be the end of the 4th quarter of 2008, all in favor of the new Montevina platform.

Is the Montevina chip a big enough step forward to merit a case redesign in the Macbook Pros?

part of me thinks yes.

the other part thinks: yes, it's a platform change in chips, and maybe they'll redesign, BUT they went from powerpc to intel (a much larger platform transition), and look how similar my MBP looks to a powerbook. so, for apple it doesn't seem they like to change a good design for components - rather they change components to fit their design.

so don't be too confident they'll do a redesigned MBP just because they're putting new chips in it.

They DID do a case re-design. They called it the Macbook Air.

Oh, you want a DVD burner? You want firewire? Ok, you want a faster hard drive? Got it.

Oops, now we're back up to Macbook Pro size. Sorry!

The processor isn't the problem these days. The Macbooks (and pros) are about as small and sleek as you can get without removing components. And that's what they did with the Air. Don't expect them to start taking stuff out of their other laptops.

Unless you're not talking about shape, but just the look. What do you want? Fins? A purple stripe? Seriously, what? I see a millions "case re-design!" posts and not ONE of them ever makes a suggestion as to what they'd actually want.

Personally, I think your answer is right here:

There. Go for it.

Case redesign:

1) I'd like something other than Aluminum. Too easy to bend. So different material. But I love the look of Al, so.
2) Mag latch is a change in the case as it changes how the top and bottom of the case look and work
3) Get rid of the plastic edging. Taper the metal so that it doesn't need that plastic edging.
4) Black.
5) MacBook style keys
6) Allow case to have a replaceable hard drive at the bottom ala MacBook. - its a feature, but requires a case redesign to allow it.
7) More air vents to help cool the laptop.

Yeah I know, that was outright blasphemy on my part. With Intel running the show now, Apple will be updating more often which will lead to more people complaining they got shafted on the previous version. The days of rare PowerPC updates are over. This will probably drive the longevity price of an Apple computer down over time but of course Apple will never do price cuts. Since I just ordered my new MacBook Pro, I can't wait to see what happens in another 4 years :)

Based on the declining value of the USD, Apple HAS reduced prices.

That would make people unhappy. If they have a BD movie they want to watch on the road, they'd have to buy the DVD or the download?

Apple will probably make it a BTO option on the MBP's.

Sony has them right now, but they're Sony drives so they can do it now and do it at a loss per drive.

Apple has to wait until someone else has the slim drives and pay normal prices.

Case redesign:

Because of all those stories of MacBook Pros, um, bending? Name one?

2) Mag latch is a change in the case as it changes how the top and bottom of the case look and work

When you figure out how to make a metal case non-magnetic, be sure to post it here.

3) Get rid of the plastic edging. Taper the metal so that it doesn't need that plastic edging.

The plastic edging is there to fit the top of the base to the bottom snugly. If you didn't have that, you'd have two bits of metal touching each other.

4) Black.

I'm with you on that. But given that a durable black finish is an added expense, I doubt many would go for it.

5) MacBook style keys

Please, no. People are kinda divided on this. For everyone who prefers the MacBook Pro keyboard, there's someone who prefers the MacBook keys...

6) Allow case to have a replaceable hard drive at the bottom ala MacBook. - its a feature, but requires a case redesign to allow it.

I'm all for that, I love how on the MacBook design, the hard drive just slides right out. Not sure I'd like to sacrifice the durability of the MBP just for this feature, however.

7) More air vents to help cool the laptop.

wtf?

Montevina might not be all that much faster, but it does have built in support for WiMax, and I read something about add'l support for HD video as well. The motherboard is supposed to be 40% smaller too, so I think it makes sense that a case redesign will accompany it.

I expect Apple is going to come out with a better integrated laptop/desktop solution. There was an interesting patent app for a laptop docking station awhile back. I think they'll offer a new 'system' of laptop, dock and monitor that will probably blow the doors off anything that's out there.

For now I think the call is to pickup a good deal on a previous gen machine and then sell it when the new designs come out for what, maybe $300 less. Even if it's more, you're getting use of a great machine and get to have some peace of mind that you can have your cake and eat it too.

I agree that no BR Drive would make SOME people unhappy, but my point is that the actual number of people would be very small. Unlike when video went from VHS to DVD, the quality bump from DVD to high def DVD is not nearly as significant or noticeable to the average user with average equipment. Thus, the usual early adopters hopped on board, but the mainstream has largely stayed away. If the BR market stays niche, which I think it has a distinct possibility of doing, I believe Apple stays out of it and works towards direct download which looks to be the way of future.

There is no end to the update cycle. Whenever you buy, there is something else in the pipeline.

I remember agonizing over when to buy, but now that I have my macbook I'm completely happy. The update yesterday didn't bother me at all and the one in June will not either.
