You know I think this is complete BS, glass trackpads? and if it does happen I will be really pissed at apple I just bought a black macbook I need it for school I can't wait till the end of septemper, because I need a computer.

I really doubt this rumor, but if it goes through **** apple...

This guy could be saying this for hype... I even so I don't like the sound of a glass trackpad... The thinner and aluminum macbook is the part that pisses me off.

My theory is that this new macbook will be a new product all together, a multitouch macbook sounds like a new product.

Dude... Don't you research before you buy Macbook? New design and revision news/rumors have been floating around the web for months and because you can't wait and plop your money into your black Macbook, you are all pissed off. If you really want a new one then, just return it. If already passed the return period then EBay or Craigslist. Because you had lack of self control to wait, it's not really Apple's problem. And if you hate the sound of glass trackpad in the first place you should be happy with your current Macbook.

The trackpads in use now (I have a 12" PB too) have the same issue the iPhones have: they sense skin contact, not any random pressure. I can't use my trackpad now with wet fingers: the pointer jumps everywhere if it works at all. The iPhone is the same way.

I've had much more of a problem with the iPhone than I have had with my PB. Sure the PB does it on occasion but I've experienced "sticky fingers" (at least that's what I like to call it - when you have a had time unlocking the phone because your thumb is sticking to the glass) much more often than I have with my PB.

Also - you may want to reset your P-RAM, I was having mouse problems and did that and haven't had any issue with "sticky fingers" since...

what is with all you people? you all use your computers wet? you surf the wen from pool? what the heck?!?

ie: I just washed my hands or something. Probably better that it doesn't work with wet fingers. No one should use electronics while soaking :)

Touching the screen gives it finger prints...and you have to reach for the screeen beyond the keyboard....

but imagine with a glass trackpad and the gesture patents...you dont have to Touch anything....you just gesture it.

NO finger prints same concept. you also dont have to ruin your lcd screen or reach for it.

So what? The iPhone screen gets fingerprints too. Big time. If fingerprints are really the only downfall, who cares. You'll be able to touch your screen. I think the touch screen should just be there in case you feel like actually touching your screen, but the glass trackpad will be the place the user usually works from.

What are your thoughts on what I just stated?

This isn't what I heard at all. The new macbooks will be leather bound. Instead of a mouse pad, you will put a gyroscopic ring on our finger and just wave your hand around. They will also have gills. You heard it here first, folks.

Not wet as much as moist. Like after you get out of the shower or you just washed your hands (which should happen quite often) and combine with that if you live in a humid environment. It's more of an issue than it should be...

Macbook Touch isn't that misleading...

If it was a tablet, it wouldn't be called the Macbook Touch, cause it's not a book design unless it's a convertible tablet, which most sources points to a slate design. It would be Macpad or Mactablet or Mactouch in that case.

Any bets on...

optical drive?

pricing?

memory/HD?

I've been waiting all summer (yeah, "all" summer :) ) for this news - been holding out on a new MB for this. I hope it comes out in time for my drop dead date of the first week in October when I really need it by.

this is real interesting. apple would not put in a glass trackpad if it did not have a purpose. the one solid piece of aluminum was already patented by apple. the only two things it could be used for is a 1) a digital display or 2) an illuminated trackpad for when you touch it (which apple has also patented).

it could also be both!

Interesting..I'm happy to wait for any update, especially if it's something "unique" like he suggests. It does sort of contradict the previous rumour about an imminent release of a new MacBook, which said that people like Best Buy, a few weeks ago, had been told they were going to have to run down their stock for the next 2 or so weeks.

We'll see I guess..

I think the touch screen should just be there in case you feel like actually touching your screen

What are your thoughts on what I just stated?

My thoughts: I think it's too expensive to make the "real" screen touch-sensitive, as too few people would use that as their input method on a regular laptop, hence this idea of a little glass screen where the trackpad used to be.

That said, I could see Apple also having a real tablet that is just a big touch screen for folks like you who really want to have the screen be the primary input interface. It's just not that popular or desired of a method right now though

i haven't seen this answered in this thread but i might have missed it: does he say anything about if there is still an optical drive in the MB? and does he say anything about the estimated weight?

anyway, if it comes in 2.5GHz, easily replacable HD, 4 GB and X4500 GPU or better i'm going for it.

i don't care about the glass trackpad. good battery life, good wifi and not too hot is more important.

Yeah, fair points..I really would like the next Macbook to have a lower weight and the same sort of battery life. Definitely the new IGP at least as well.

bro, mainly i was talking about the promotion. sure, they don't need to give out anything. they are giving out because new ipods are coming out. i'd stand with my words. perhaps you misunderstand me. that's fine. it would be fccuked up if they release the Book after Sept. 15th.

I would be very skeptical of Apple releasing new computers before the promotion ends. There was a similar promotion several years back, and they introduced new iPods, but they were ineligible for the promotion. It would be cool for you, and all other consumers, but Apple doesn't need to give away iPods to sell new computers.

As far as the glass trackpad goes, just hope you don't break it and then use it without looking... While this would be extremely unlikely, it would still hurt quite a bit, and I don't know if blood voids the warranty.

Also, regarding blu-ray, for those who can't see past the "Why would you want it on a laptop?" argument... Blu-ray will be very useful for data as well as movies. How long before some games require a large amount of data (more than several DVDs can hold?) Besides, if the laptop has DVI/HDMI out, you now have the ability to use your laptop as a blu-ray player on any screen. I use the blu-ray player in my Dell on my 46" TV, and it's quite amazing for action/sci-fi movies. I say throw it in as an option (Hey, Apple wasn't at all shy about a $999 SSD) , and let people decide if they want it.

The whole argument against it on here sounds like "Well, because other people have it and we don't, it must not be that good". Perhaps Apple will do it right (and oh so much better than Dell...)

Regarding new MBPs, I'm excited to see how Apple has changed and improved on the design that they've stuck with for so long. My PowerBook is getting old, and I might just be in the market for a new Mac laptop in the near future...

Boring update, I was hoping for a glass trackpad with a screen. I think that could be a big evolution in laptops to have a touchscreen trackpad. I think there might still be hope for a tablet which I personally would like.

It amazes me how we all still pay for lack of some basic features and a stunning design (that doesn't effect how the computer is useful or actually operates) when we buy Apple.

What the hell use is there in a glass trackpad? Seriously, a thinner MacBook.

Before Apple continues to be artsy and unique they need to look at the serious lack of utility their products have. My MacBook I paid a good 1500$ for with upgrades (4 gigs of ram, a larger/faster hd and a case to product its... easily damaged shell) and these are the ports it has on it.

Two USB ports, One FW400 port, a ethernet port, your usual audio stuff, a dvi port and of course the magna safe power port (genius in design). It also lacks dedicated graphics, and a super drive.

For 1500$ I get a combo drive and 128mb of vram? Lets even minus the upgrades I put into it and consider its base cost of 1199$ CAN (the base model of the current generation of MacBook) and all I get with that is 2 USB ports?

No HDMI port? No super drive? No third USB port? No ports on the right hand side of the computer? No dedicated graphic? No PCI slots? The thing over heats (to 70C +) when watching a few youtube videos...

And the next revision of their MB is going to make it thinner? Add a glass trackpad? With multi touch?

I really think there is a line between making a product that compromises usefulness for looks and a product that is a middle ground between the two.
I think Apple will seriously farther cross the line if their answer to creating a better notebook to compete with PC's (exploding with utilities that also look pretty decent) is a frigging glass track pad.

Hmmmm... Maybe the trackpad will be similar to an iPhone or iPod Touch... Possibly a screen on it? :)

Great ! One more thing that can break easily when I put my laptop into my backpack. I hope they dont use glass. I think they could be focusing on more important things...like updating the macbook pro. They like update the macbook every other week. My macbook pro is going on 3 years old and still looks like the ones they are selling in the store. Every now and then you'll hear something about the macbook pro or mac pro but every other week Steve is talking about the macbook or iphone using such Steve-isms as "Amazing" and "Revolutionary".

I think its just gimmicky and eye candy. Give us better performance, more storage space, longer battery life. Innovate that way.

on another thought, this thread actually gave me more incentives to buy the current MB now!! at least I know my purchase won't be updated in weeks, but months!! I know that the waiting is not feasible for my school starting next week!! ;)

I'm really sick of hearing people go "I'm pissed at apple because I just bought __________"

No. You A. keep up with a rumor site, and B. technology will always change.

You have to take in account the fact that the Macbook hasn't seen a major overhaul in a long time, and also the fact that rumors have been going everywhere for months now, it's your fault that you bought it at this time.

In college, you don't need the latest and greatest, and if you did, you sure as hell wouldn't be buying a Macbook. You're going to do some research, and type a lot of papers.

Shut the **** up and enjoy what you have already. If you're so dissatisfied in the fact that your new machine isn't the top of the line anymore, then return it, get your money, and never buy a new piece of machinery ever, because everything is going to be outdated in a few months. That's life.

God I'm sick of people saying this. It's like the iPhone BS all over again.

I really need a new laptop, but i am willing to wait a couple of months just because i dont want to buy and then have apple rape me a month later when they release an update.

My Wishlist:

1) Aluminium Case
2) Slightly Slimmer
3) Better inbuilt camera

All laptops (most actually, not all) have a little square at the bottom you use as a mouse. That's a trackpad. Imagine that made of glass.

Oh, so that's what a trackpad is...!!!
And I guess (no, don't tell me) that glass is a translucent material from which some jar or cup are made of. Right?

I wanted to know if any laptop had a similar feature already... But I guess not...

Macbook Glass Trackpad

I think the idea of an IPod Touch style glass trackpad would blow minds. Apple possesses the technology, if they're able to jam it into a Macbook and not have the battery life drop significantly, I say go for it.

Found this image of what it could possibly look like, you may have already seen it.
