Man, I have to wait 2 more months. I've have had the money in my account since June 1 and have been waiting since the screen speculation said 3rd quarter. I was hoping July or early Aug. 3rd quarter not late September. I work in a school and wanted it have it before we started the new year. :(

Heh, if the update just misses the back to school purchases, I feel like Apple is taking a big hit in business. Either way, I'm waiting. The iPod touch is an amazing incentive; however, the necessity of such a device...is lacking.

So thinking about this more....with a glass track pad and gesture patents built in wouldn't it become a touch display with out touching anything. No finger prints!
Just gesture a flip above the glass track pad and it works like you were touching the screen. You don't touch the track pad or screen...it does all of multi touch with gestures above the glass track pad.

I'd like to see this. My dad has worn the trackpad on his notebook down to the circuitry.

Instead of the silver covering, you see the green contacts underneath.

If they could put a screen behind it, it would be that much cooler. But something that wouldn't wear out would be all I ask for.

End of September... okay thats cool I know what I am spending my left over financial aid money on now. I love the idea of a glass trackpad, I hate how grungy the trackpad gets after a year of use.

That's because the trackpad doesn't care how grimy or oily your fingers are. Glass does. If you've ever tried to handle your iPhone with moist fingers it's quite a pain in the rear as your finger doesn't glide over the screen for squat. If they go glass it'll give me yet another reason to stick with my 12" PB. Of course my checking account would be happy (much like going with plastic for the 3G as I'm not buying one of those either).

I know for a fact that many students start school near the end of August, so an update in September would be too late for a large portion of the MacBook buyers. I like the new design but I can only hope it comes out earlier than mentioned.

The trackpads in use now (I have a 12" PB too) have the same issue the iPhones have: they sense skin contact, not any random pressure. I can't use my trackpad now with wet fingers: the pointer jumps everywhere if it works at all. The iPhone is the same way.

No Multi-Touch Screen????

If the screen was multi-touch, I'd buy it no matter what the darn thing looked like :)

Why are they waiting so long to make a darn touch-screen laptop??

Sorry for the annoying two "darn"s.

Perhaps it is just brushed glass to look nicer and more elegant than current trackpads? Otherwise, under normal circumstances, I would not buy a "second screen/trackpad" rumor, but Apple did say some new and interesting things are coming, so who knows. That would be a pretty amazing new feature, if they did anything with the trackpad at all, regardless of what it may be.

fuuck the Blu-Ray... are you really going to enjoy your movies on a 13" LCD screen.

Thank you!! I am growing weary of all of this Blu-Ray talk. The cheapest unit is somewhere 300-400. And that is the crappy ones. Until the price become lower it will not happy. Additionally why would you want something so high end on a small screen. I would think a minimum 20" would be needed before it could be completely enjoyed.

I'd love it to come out tomorrow, however it will not be out in any way shape or form until the back-to-school promo ends. For those students going to school in Aug or Sept, the product Apple has for you is a MacBook with a free iPod. For the rest of us, this will be out after the promo ends (I hope)

Touching the screen gives it finger prints...and you have to reach for the screeen beyond the keyboard....

but imagine with a glass trackpad and the gesture patents...you dont have to Touch anything....you just gesture it.

NO finger prints same concept. you also dont have to ruin your lcd screen or reach for it.

Glass trackpad = iPod functionality when computer is sleeping

I think I know the deal with the glass trackpad...

Remember a few years ago when PC laptop makers had the little exterior LCDs that ran widget-like things when the laptop lid was closed?

I think the glass trackpad may be the same idea. It will give us the ability to access music, movies, safari, email... all the functions of the iPod touch...

That way, if you just want to check something quick, you don't have to waste the battery by running entire computer, or even booting it up in the first place!

I'd kinda like that :)

Laptop could be sleeping quietly on my kitchen bar, yet I could still quickly read a new e-mail without having to get "involved" with the computer.

Not sure if the interface would work though, considering a trackpad is normally horizontal to the user.

I'm sure whatever they are cooking up will appeal to me. I'm committed to buying the next iteration of MacBook Pro (or MacBook, if it has similar specs & design).

THAT is a cool idea. I'd love to see that. Even if it just displayed RSS feeds (like the screen saver) while sleeping, somehow stored in a tiny bit of flash RAM

Show me a Blu-ray laptop that gets more than an hour's battery life and I'll agree that that's a good idea.

The new Sony Vaio FW

I am not saying that the MB should get a BR, because it would be a joke with the worst screen I have ever seen in a laptop :p. Even if they make it LED, it is still small :D.

what is with all you people? you all use your computers wet? you surf the wen from pool? what the heck?!?
