I hope the MP stays the same for the most part. I would like to see the updated FW ports 3200. I also would like to see the ports get put on more then one channel so using the fw 400 and 800 at the same time doesnt slow things down, and the use of two fw 800 ports ran at both full speed.

The Mac PRO design looks just as good as it did 5 years ago on the G5.
But maybe a front mounted module for a card reader (yes I know a lot of people will hate this, but I say module, optional).

I'm happy…my G5 still doesn't look out of date. :)
I've stumbled across this (Nervian CardReader). I don't know if it's shipping yet, but it does look nice, and was meant to work with the Mac Pro & G5. ;)

I think the case looks hideous, but everyone here seems to be gaga over them. Not that there's anything wrong with having your opinion, but it just seems weird that EVERYONE is in agreement

Hmm. I think if they have a card reader it should just be like a port on the front. Anyone care to post a mockup?

:) I'm the one who threw it at you for you to stumble upon it. :D

I think the MP is beautiful. lol both the MBP and MP had me in awe as I pulled them new out of the box and neither of them ever lost the awe factor.

I'd rather have a card reader built into a keyboard or monitor. My tower is low on the ground.

It was a really nice find. :) Thanks for posting the link (forgot thread ).

As far as the Mac Pro's looks, not bad. Ultimately, though, I go for functionality over looks. Pretty crap vs. f ugly beast, f ugly beast wins. :D Add decent appearance to the beast, and I'm in heaven. :p

I also like the monitor's equipped with one. As in your physical arrangement, it produces less clutter than another USB attached box in the way. ;) Unfortunately, the monitor you really may not have one. :( Grrr... :p

My quicksilver 2001 still looks nice. If they did that with flat sides and aluminum, I'd be happy. It is a bit smaller though, and the server boards are absolutely HUGE, so that's not really realistic.

You have a shittty taste, that´s why you dont get it.

The design itself is classic. Utilitarian but classic.
Like citroen id, Le Corbusiers Barcelona chair or a woman.

It will be intresting to see how the apple eventually will change the casing. Workstation class mobos will be large in the future as well and 3.5" disks will be the norm for next few years as will large gfx cards.

Maybe they manage to trim 10-20% down in size, hide the handles and remodell the cheesegrater. Incoming air from back and out from underneath (i know,iknow..) or something?

Aluminium propably will be the choice of material, maybe now with a touch of black plastic/glass as well. Who knows..

I like the current Mac Pro design in terms of easy of use, no drive cables etc. It was a big step forward over the G5 in this way (although you could say it didn't look as pretty inside). It would be nice to have a smaller case like the G4 range however I don't think this will be possible whilst retaining or adding to the current features. I don't think shedding bays or slots would be a good idea. I believe the Nehalem Xeons will be physically larger than the current Penryn chips as they are built on the same process but have more transistors. Also DDR3 RAM may not allow the separate memory boards and may require extra sockets as triple channel is predicted.

if could stick the guts of MP into G4.. id be a happy guy.

anyway, the MP is a bit taller, isnt it? or is it just an illusion with another optical bay

Yelp. It's taller. My G4 (466 DA) is 17 inches tall. The Mac Pro is 20.1 inches tall.

If Steve can maintain his love for the classic basics of his beloved 501's and black turtleneck, then hopefully he can cling to the classic says-it-all, minimalist statement/art of the Mac Pro case.
It's beautiful. Form, and function.

I think it's funny how they keep going full circle and yet somehow manage to convey the notion that they're offering something new and bold... first there were the black G3 PowerBooks. "Ooooh, black, that's sooo hot".

Then came the PB G4 titanium w/ black keys. "Ooooh, metal with black keys, wicked... so much cooler than those stale old black machines".

Then came the all-silver (well, aluminium) PowerBooks. "Ooooh... the all metal look... that's so fresh.... so much better than the stinky old metal/black machines."

Then the all-white iBook. "Oooh baby, white... it's like, wow, what a tasty color".

Then the white MacBook, also available in black (at extra cost). "Oooooh black, what a deep and mysterious and totally revolutionary color... it's like, uh, white, but somehow the exact opposite! It's not like every PC notebook on the planet has looked exactly like this for the last 10 years or anything.".

Then the MacBook Air. "Ooooh, metal with black keys! I've never seen anything like this combo before. Especially not on the PB G4 circa 2002, or the Dell Inspiron 6000 series which was a ripoff of the original PB G4 and is only one of the most common laptops in the world."

I bet the next generation of Macs will be beige and that people will think it's an amazing advancement in design and an industry first.

I had the same idea. Still distinguishing pro lines from non-pro lines, Apple could come out with an Apple Pro Keyboard. Wireless, black backlight keys, and rechargeable battery (instead of AA's). Maybe a wired version but I woul d be inclined to think not.

I would like to see a dark aluminum version of the Mac Pro next. :)

I think Apple should make all of their Pro products dark aluminum, but not cheap black plastic. ;)

I cranked up Photoshop and made a concept image...

I am easily swayed by black items, but I have to admit to myself, metal doesn't need paint, it just 'is'.
You never saw a black DeLorean. Some things do not need the overkill(in this case) of a gussying-up.

That, and the fact that any black computer just pantomimes "PC".

Slim it down a touch, my PowerMac G5 is a little too large in my opinion. At least on the Mac Pro there are more hard disk bays though!

Improve the cheese grater of death?!?

To improve the MP you have to start with who your target market is...not wannabes who are looking for a Mac gaming machine but serious professionals who make their livelihood with the MP and who use the machine day in and day out. Not all but many of those people are dealing with video and photography who are constantly swapping media, hooking up cameras and transferring still and video back and forth. Anything that Apple can do to make these mundane tasks easier will be greeted with open arms.
