I am easily swayed by black items, but I have to admit to myself, metal doesn't need paint, it just 'is'.
You never saw a black DeLorean. Some things do not need the overkill(in this case) of a gussying-up.

That, and the fact that any black computer just pantomimes "PC".

The current Mac Pro is the most well-designed Mac ever. I don't see the need to change it's classic industrial look and feel.

I would like to see a dark aluminum version of the Mac Pro next. :)

I think Apple should make all of their Pro products dark aluminum, but not cheap black plastic. ;)

I cranked up Photoshop and made a concept image...

NO, NO don't hope for that! It could get somebody thinking of something like this.... :D

I think the Mac Pro is fine as it is. One thing they could do however, is find some way to make it so that you can't see the fans blowing at the front.

The best effort I've seen so far when it comes to combining minimalism, aluminium and liquid cooling is probably the Voodoo Envy:

The tribal logo is lame, yeah, and the LCD display is a little to pimp-my-ride for my taste, but apart from that it's pretty close to Apple in spirit.

Oh please no...

looks like a burnt mac pro to be honest

Yeah right.

If Apple showed you the exact same casing with an Apple logo on the side you'd wet yourself. Snap out of it.
Umm, no. Unlike some people, putting the Apple name or logo on something doesn't automatically make me like it. If it looks like crap, then it looks like crap no matter who makes it.

you are a very sad man if you really think that way...
I've followed the company and its fan base for 25 years and I know perfectly well that many are so indoctrinated that they allow Apple to dictate what looks good and what doesn't. One day you'll find them puking over black plastic PC notebooks; the next day Apple decides to make a black version of the MacBook and suddenly black is the hottest color ever. "Ooooh, what is this unique color, it's so deep and mysterious... Apple has done it again." Apple could bring back effing beige and the fans would all bow before the mighty Johnny Ive.

and what exactly makes you think any individual among us is one of those? ur just making assuming, thus making an ass of u and me

So you just think I'm one of them??? WTF dude? I don't have or want a black MacBook. I don't have or want a black iPod either. Just because its "new" or "hip" doesn't mean I like it. Hell, I'll be the first to tell you that Apple's new naming scheme of "MacBook Pro" "MacBook" and "Mac Pro" is stupid. Just because it's Apple's way doesn't mean I like it. Not everyone on an Apple user forum is as simple minded as you seem to think.

Reading through this thread, i get the picture some of you folks are missing something.

Apple has two very clear and distinctive lines.
1. Professional
2. Consumer

For the moment the "professional" line have less curves and more of a cubical design with rounded edges (take the ACD, MacPro and MacBook Pro) Fits in to most offices just fine!! This means i don't think Apple needs to redesign anything externally. Though, internally is a different matter!!

And their "Consumer" line has lots of curves, smooth edges with high contrast. A play on black and white with it's silky smooth aluminium and slightly tinted glass edges.... for the home it's perfect!

But the MacBook, popular with students, is slightly outta place...
Perhaps that'll be the first system to be designed? Maybe giving it more of a hug-able look and feel? I do wonder.. and i have my doubts about them making it thinner without changing it's material and upping the price a touch.

I agree, and those who don't have blinded taste I would argue. Yes the LCD is ugly. but other than that, the case is elegantly simple, monolithic, minimalist and strong. It VERY much has borrowed from the aesthetic of the Mac Pro, whether anyone likes to admit it or not. I actually find the slot loading drives of the Voodoo more appealing than the superdrives on my Mac Pro.

Yet you take a silly amount of offense to a comment that was not even directed at you...just saying. It's the internet man, not life or death.

not really, ive bought macpro because of the power and the software. i said i stick the guts into a G4 anyday if i could (and preserve the cooling efficency)
and this voodoo actually is uglier than MP :)
besides, the tribal sign on the side has about the same size and position as MP. and i cant even see it on mine ;)

try loading an 8cm cd into that :) Or, try to stick another drive in. i dont think there is much slot loading drives for computers available, most of them i see in car stereos. otherwise yeah, it is a slicker solution, designwise.
but i hate slot loading drives otherwise

I hope they don't redesign the Mac Pro anytime soon. Sure the Macbook and Macbook Pro have their port issues, screen issues, accessibility issues, but I think the Mac Pro is perfect. A few years down the line it will need a redesign, but right now it is still by far the most beautiful tower computer ever.

PS: I hope they don't make it any smaller. It has great airflow now and has a lot of room. Anyone who buys a Mac Pro would build their office around the computer, you don't need a smaller one since you won't be moving it around.

+1 on all of that.

I really hope that Apple don't indulge their new found love of black trim. It tends to be a little flashy, and the current Mac Pro is simply lovely and its design statement is a perfect reflection of what it is, a tower of elegant power, inside and out.

hi, I love my mac pro, but some interesting thing of apple I see always, when a rummor around the world about a new hardware, a lot people create fakes or prototypes... of the new hardware, I remember the fakes of iphone... but never are best than apple real thing..., any fake was close to the real iphone, apple have amazing designers... so Iam corious about the next model of mac pro design... maybe more small?

As some others have said, I'd like to see the slightly more architectural aspect of the Omen in the Pro, and for 'the colander look' to be replaced by something more monolithic but maybe, knowing Apple, tempered by the "scalloped edges language" they've got going on. A taller machine would express that better.

Mainly though I'd like to see some changes under the hood.

In addition to height, I'd like it to be a tad wider - to accomodate airflow / heat transfer that actually goes some way to making it a workstation (the OS can't be helped, but hey) instead of a jumped-up home computer.

Engineering - work on the airflow as above while maintaining silence, also the drive bays have to be reengineered - it's a ridiculous system done for looks than accessibility or stability in use with higher-end drives. Some other detail changes.

I'd also like slightly more stability from the lower feet, but it's not a huge issue. Getting rid of the janky optical drive arrangement would be good too, but for enthusiasts (clearly many of you love the compromised engineering so much that you spend a lot of time hacking stuff that needn't be hacked in the first place on a proper workstation) I guess a slot-load wouldn't be so desirable. Me, I wouldn't mind.

Oh yeah - I'm not sure how many agree with me, but I could lose the FW ports at the front, and have them relocated to the back. The use of FW is for less transient devices than USB for me.

pic of Black Delorean

Actually I think you proved the guy you responded to right. The Delorean looks surprisingly ordinary in black.
