Back in the olden days I used to upgrade iPhones every year. Somewhere along the way I changed and now only update once my current iPhone doesn’t get iOS updates anymore. Went from a 7+ to a 14 Pro so I always like reading about the new models and their upcoming features so I know what I’m getting when the iPhone 20 is released.

Some people will really appreciate that variable aperture. A one inch sensor would be a nice addition as well if we ever get one. Maybe Apple is holding off on that until the iPhone 19 Pro or 20 Pro?
Still with all the software processing going on, no one will know which phone you use to take a picture, nor will they care?

I'm not quite that extreme but I get it. The phone is much like various other tech in that it evolves a lot in the first few/several years (largely because the first ones sucked) then they finally reach "good enough". After that there are some nice improvements but rarely compelling enough on their own to warrant an upgrade. I went from yearly up to iPhone 4 then roughly every three years or so after. Three years seems to accumulate enough changes that for me it's worth an upgrade. So my next phone may be the iPhone 19 pro

Rumours of underscreen face id is becoming more and more of an urban myth. I am not that concerned eitherway as I tend to update my phones upon a design change.

So it is more feasible for me to buy a iphone 17 pro max this year, and wait another 5 years give or take for the next design change in

Hopefully by then the iphone will go full screen!

Typical of manufacturers to “enhance” the specifications in their marketing. Anyway, let’s hope we get a new sensor with the 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max/Ultra and not have to wait until next year.
Very true regarding marketing, but in this case it actually goes back to the time of video sensors used in the early days of TV. The cameras used vacuum tubes to capture images and the specs referred to the diameter of the round capture area. Only the rectangle-shaped area in the middle of the “circle” was technically used, covering about 2/3 of the area. Roughly the same ratio we see today for spec-to-actual physical size. Seems like that should have been corrected when we started making semiconductor sensors, but whatever 🤷‍♂️

"Apple Intelligence upgrade." Does that mean it will, you know, work?
No, it will just mean that Siri will have an upgraded/smarter response for you when she cannot help you. Haa! :D

"Hey Siri, can you please do ......."
Siri: "I would really love to be able to do that for you, but I STILL cannot help with such requests. Please wait while I refer you to a truly intelligent AI agent that can".
:p

Interesting upgrades that seem like they will be benefit iphone users.
Vapourware. Apple will probably deliver one fifth of that (if any), do it badly, and delay the rest to iPhone 24. A bit like they did with the Apple modem that was rumoured years ago and now it’s only on the cheap iPhone because it’s inferior to the Qualcomm solution. Or the wireless charger that was cancelled completely. Or Apple intelligence (🤣🤣🤣). Or a completely portless iPhone. And the list goes on…

As opposed to a “real AI” response, “Let me see if I can steal an answer for that, and if I cannot find one I will just make one up”

Not sure whether an under the screen FaceID will materialize by the end of next year. As for the rest, expecting the yearly camera improvements along with a new chip.

And a couple of new software features exclusive for the new phones.

Given the sensor size, it is unlikely to make any real difference to anyone.

You seriously don’t understand camera optics if you think a one inch sensor would be used in an iPhone.
Yeah. I do not know much either but was wondering how big phone would be with 1" sensor. :D

But in some years when technology of Fresnel/flat lenses mature we may see bigger sensors in even phones I guess.

Regarding aperture, I am not sure Apple would add cost to phone if it would bring zero effect.

It will have Apple Intelligence so day 1 for me. I just can't cope without it.

Good stuff. Hilarious. But, in all honesty, candor and seriousness, Apple Intelligence is awesome. I seldom use it lol but it’s there and private when I need it. Apple is awesome. People say oh software is garbage and they don’t innovate blah blah. Bro! They have like 80 bajillion phones they have to keep stable…all while
Implementing a whole new (SECURE!!!) AI system…cut em some damn slack. They just released the greatest iPhone eva (16 pro max) what more do you want, Jesus goddamn Christ lol

Haha as a 16PM owner; if I see the next generation of phones get an upgraded Apple Intelligence, and the entire reason to buy the 16 was Apple Intelligence that never got released.. I am going to be pissed. I’ll probably just switch to Android and just be done with Apple all together.

It looks like Apple may have a winner with the C1, at least when it comes to first gen hardware. Up until the launch of the 16e I was under the impression Apple would stick with Qualcomm for many years to come based on the rumored struggles they were having with their in-house modem development. They were doing much better than I realized. In a couple of years, Qualcomm may be in Apple’s rear view mirror.
I hope you're right. Only time will tell!! :)

Speaking only to the video side of things, a variable aperture would allow users like me to keep a preferable shutter speed (like 1/48 for 24p or 1/60 for 30p) without the use of a ND filter necessarily. It would also theoretically help the sharpness on the lesser sensors of the ultra wide and telephoto, assuming those aren’t brought parity with the main wide.
