It was named because it literally was the fourth Nexus phone.

Hmm I hope google would have thought far enough ahead not to do this. That could only work for a few more years. If that was true it would be Nexus 5 this year Nexus 6 next year and then?? Nexus 7 is already taken lol

At this point the name doesn't matter. A 4.97" screen and the rumored specs for the rumored price still have me excited. I don't need a name change.

True, it doesn't really matter, but for some reason Nexus 5 sounds better to me. Maybe just because 5 > 4, haha.

Nexus 5 sounds so much better, it being the 5th generation Nexus phone, and having a 5" screen.

The number 5 has more in common and theme with it, not 4.

Ultimately the name doesn't matter and I don't understand why people get so hung up on it. Heck, they could call it the Nexus Crap and I'd still be all over it. LOL.

I favor "Nexus 5" solely because it offers a more accurate description and identity to the device. It's a near 5" screen. People will get that. It helps with making sense of the branding.

But I will say this:

It has nothing to do with the generation. It may have represented the generation before (the Nexus 4 is the only one to do this and I personally think it was just a happy coincidence), but it certainly doesn't anymore moving forward. Anyone who argues that the number has anything to do with the generation just isn't paying enough attention. Does that mean both Nexus 7's (2012, 2013 versions) were 7th generations? The Nexus 10 (and the soon to be Nexus 10 2013) also 10th generation? What happens to the 6th and then 7th generation Nexus smartphones (and 8th, and 9th, etc.)? Will they be called Nexus 6, Nexus 7 (<-- confusing much?), and so forth? Of course not.

Even if the new Nexus smartphone ends up being called "Nexus 5" it would be another happy coincidence that it so happens to also be the 5th generation Nexus smartphone. I hope people give that argument a rest.

Ultimately, I don't care what Google calls it. But Nexus 5 makes the most sense to me for their 2013 smartphone.

----------

Personally, I think Google should make a Nexus 4 (4.3" screen), a Nexus 5 (4.9 or 5" screen), a Nexus 7 (duh), a Nexus 10 (duh), and a Nexus 12 (12 or 12.1" screen). [EDIT: Obviously the N4 and 5 would be smartphones, and the N7, 10, and 12 tablets.]

Grow the family! And each device will be tied to an OEM for two years. That way, they get a second shot, but it also makes things exciting after their two year cycle is done -- "who will be the next Nexus maker?" That's always a fun thing to discover.

All the while continue to offer and expand the Google Play Editions of each year's flagships as well (Galaxy S5, HTC One 2014, Xperia "Z2", Moto X-2, etc.).

If Google can pull all of that off...

That's true. If Google did go with Nexus 5 than I fully expect that next year's model would keep the same name - Nexus 5 (2014), especially since there's no way Google going to go bigger than 5" (hence no Nexus 6). That way Google's branding scheme will consistent across all their Nexus devices.

Of course, Google may throw us of for a loop and go for something completely original - the Nexus 4S perhaps? :p

Haha, anything is possible these days.

I suppose anything is possible. :D

I remember when Apple was about to introduce the latest iPad and everyone was going crazy over the name. IPad 4...iPad 3S...and then they just called it...iPad. That, to me, is the smart thing to do and I think Google should follow the same logic. The Nexus line is now well-established so why not just start down the road of Nexus Phone (2013), Nexus Phone (2014), etc? They've already begun to move that way with the Nexus 7 (2012) and Nexus 7 (2013) and the Nexus 10 line. To do the same with the phone would be natural.

Samsung is about the only OEM that's got their naming scheme together from the get-go. Galaxy S, Galaxy S2, S3, S4...Note, Note 2, Note 3. No one ever argues whether the number denotes generation or screen size on those because the naming is obvious.

But really who cares what they call it. We will all know when the new one comes out. I never saw what the big deal is here with what they call these things. If they call it the Nexus P for phone and Nexus T for tablet or 7 or 8.....its no big deal but some get real defensive about a name.

I don't care personally, but for the sake of branding and marketing and clicking with the general consumer, Nexus 5 just makes the most sense.

That's all.

Oh yeah, I'm with you (as I stated just a bit further up the page). What a phone's called doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things.

I believe it is 4.97" or 4.96".

Also, any information on when event invites will be rolling out?

And where did you hear 32GB? I thought the only one known at this point was 16.

The specs are all information from a leaked LG-D821 service manual that can be found here - http://www.scribd.com/doc/173744848/LG-D821
