It's been "confirmed" that the event on the 24th has nothing to do with Android or hardware.

http://www.androidpolice.com/2013/1...-out-invites-to-october-24-google-play-event/

that's not a confirmation, fyi. it's all speculation.

my speculation is the nexus 5 WILL be announced that day because google sells it through google play, the leaks are everywhere, and kitkat is in full promo-mode now.

im excited - battery not withstanding. i'll be sending back the g4 ge this week. the battery life on this device isn't much better than the n4 anyway. the only device that seems to kill it in that dept. is the note 3, but touchwiz is a bummer.

nexus 5 it must be.

I read that geek.com was contacted by Google to take the invite picture down or something like that. They said nothing new is coming from that event. I think we are still clueless as to the Nexus 5 announcement.

If it were the Nexus 5 event, I don't think we'd be speculating about what the event is about.

At $349 it's a very good deal but this phone have better specs at lower price (also unlocked).

Xiaomi Mi3 at $327

Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core 2.3GHz CPU
Sharp/LG 5″ 1080P IPS display with ultra-sensitive touch
2GB LPDDR3 RAM
16GB storage
SONY 13 MP Exmor RS CMOS back camera
2MP BSI front camera
NFC & 2.4/5G WiFi support
3050 mAh battery
Dimensions: 114mm×72mm×8.1mm

better camera and better battery than the Nexus 5.
$22 less than Nexus 5

Xiaomi in the near future will give Samsung a run for their money in the Chinese smarthphone market share.
Internationally, I don't think Xiaomi can compete with Google Nexus. Though it doesn't need to expand internationally since China is now the #1 smartphone market in the world.

Don't trust the Brand/name
Does not get stock Android
Does not get timely updates from Google

Same screen size as the S4, with a more powerful SOC but with a much smaller battery...

This should be interesting...

SoC is a little more efficient than the S4's Snapdragon 600, but it will be using an IPS panel which requires more power compared to AMOLED. Will definitely be interesting.

Very good points on both of your parts. I'm sold whether I get 5 hours screen on or 2 (I'm ALWAYS near a charger, so it's not an issue for me), but it should be interesting to see how these specs impact battery life.

I'm sure the battery life will be an upgrade. It can't get much worse than the N4 battery life.

How much longer are we gonna have to wait? Seriously Google... This is getting too long...

It can get worst. 1080p plus 5 inch screen means more power being used to light up the screen compared to 720p screen of the nexus 4.

I don't see Google giving the "OK" to a device that is the successor to the N4 and it gets worse battery. That would just be silly.

The reviews and Anandtech's tests will settle the score of the Nexus 5 battery life. We'll know soon.

Personally, I'm not that worried about it. 2300 mAh sounds small (I think a lot of this had to do with it being "based" on the LG G2 which had a whopping 3000 mAh battery, and so when the Nexus 5 was discovered to be 2300, people were shocked and disappointed), but 2300 is relatively comparable to today's 5" smartphone battery sizes.

I'd be more worried about the camera...

Agreed.

Not to mention a powerful SoC which might be more efficient than the S4 and 600, but still has to power a full HD screen, stronger GPU, and LTE in a smaller footprint than the N4.

This is like the S-versions of iPhones. Packing more power and trying to go faster in generally makes the juice die out faster. There is always something that can cancel out the benefit.

I thnk the bare minimum to power these Snapdragon 800/1080p smartphones should be 3000 mAH like the G2 and Note 3. If that rumored N5 will have that option like what I've read, then that is the way to go. Just being on par with the Nexus 4's batt life isn't acceptable.

On a sidenote, I think the Nexus 4 is generally sexier than the Nexus 5. True it has the crack proned glass back but I find it generally sleeker looking than the N5. Similar to my opinion between the design of the iPhone 4/4s over iPhone 5/5s. But the 5 version of the Nexus and iPhone generally uses more practical material (not glass) even if the latter has scruffing on the edges.

Android Authority seems to be down -- won't load. What's the link say?

It uses the epithet "indie" to describe Capital Cities, who are getting airtime everywhere with their generic pop-dance tune. Really, that's an insult to all the actual indie bands struggling to make a living and book shows.

Oh, and there was something else about Geek's source telling them that the 24th event will not feature any new hardware.

Maybe a better comparison is the HTC One. Nexus will have a slightly larger display (though a small portion will only be on screen buttons) but supposedly more efficient SoC and slightly larger battery.

I find the battery life on my HTC One very reasonable so if it can match that, I'd be perfectly happy.

I believe they have the same battery size. But the Nexus 5 has a larger backlight to power.
