More on the Falcons

Falcons one game from spot in history

This four-game streak without a turnover by the Atlanta Falcons had me thinking earlier today. I knew it was significant, but I wanted some perspective, so I reached out out to my friends at ESPN Stats & Information and they also enlisted some help from Elias Sports Bureau.

I already knew this was a franchise record for Atlanta, but it turns out this streak is a lot more significant than I ever imagined. The Falcons have a chance to make history Sunday when they play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They already are part of a very elite crew and they can separate themselves from all the rest if they go through the Tampa Bay game without a turnover.

The research I got says that the Falcons are one of 12 teams to go four games without a turnover since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970. No team has gone more than four straight games without a turnover in that time frame.

The other 11 teams to go four games without a turnover were the Jets (earlier this season), the Carolina Panthers (late last season), the 2005 Broncos, the 2001 Jets, the 2001 Seahawks, the 1999 Jaguars, the 1998 Bengals, the 1995 Rams, the 1994 Lions, the 1980 Vikings and the 1971 Dolphins.

lol ... I thought Ryan was gonna fly under the radar right to the NFC Championship.

This is just like 1981 when after many years of having seen the AFC beat up on the NFC in Super Bowls, a largely ignored QB named Joe Montana came into being. But from there, the rest of the NFC also had great seasons like the Redskins, Cowboys, Giants, Green Bay, and others.

I think Ryan will get the full respect of a Peyton Manning, Favre, or Brady from the press until he wins the Super Bowl. Either that or put up many years of good numbers like Jim Kelly or Dan Marino.

If the press in America, and Atlanta fails to give love to Ryan, we can take him either on the Niners or Raiders who like to take leftovers like Tampa Bay's Steve Young or (cough cough) the Niners Jim Plunkett.

He has quietly been playing lights out
He is a leader and a clutch performer
Not many QBs I would take over him at this point, especially as young and healthy as he is

Matt Ryan named NFC player of the month

FLOWERY BRANCH – Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan was named the NFC offensive player of the month for November on Wednesday.

Ryan, who hasn’t thrown an interception over his last 165 attempts, guided the Falcons toa 4-0 record in November, including three wins over teams with winning records.

Over that four game span, Ryan has completed 106 of 153 passes (69.3 percent) for 1,001 yards, seven touchdowns and no interceptions.

Ryan compiled a passer rating of 102.3 during the month and led the Falcons on game-winning drives in the final minute of play against Baltimore and Green Bay.

Wide receiver Roddy White was named the NFC player of the month for October.

And Matt Bryant has been money
24 for 27 this season with 3 game winning kicks

Matt Bryant named NFC special teams player of the week

FLOWERY BRANCH – Falcons kicker Matt Bryant, who kicked a 47-yard field goal with nine seconds left to lift the Falcons to a 20-17 victory over the Green Bay Packers, was named the NFC’s special teams player of the week on Wednesday.

It was Bryant’s third game-winning kick this season.

Can't believe how my Titans have fallen this year. :(

Here's hoping for a new coach!

Do you really think what has happened with them this year is because of Fisher? They've had some serious injury problems including their coordinator who is struggling with cancer. Hey I'm a Tennessee/Texas guy so I'm a Vince Young fan, but at some point he's got to grow up and stop throwing temper tantrums. I don't think what is going on with the Titans can be traced to one coach or player, it's a variety of problems and issues that have just been a part of this roller coaster season for them. Basically, there's plenty of blame to go around and some of it also falls on Bud Adams.

I'm no Tennessee fan but Fisher needs to go. He's been there since 1994 and he's only won one AFC championship and that was a fluke. That was not a legal lateral pass on that miracle that happened. Whatever though, maybe it's not him. Not my place to talk, just an opinion.

Who's looking forward to that Monday night game?? I cannot wait. I really hope the Patriots win (Patriots fan). Rex ryan needs to stop talking so much ****. I hate that guy and can't wait to see what he has to say when the Patriots give him something to talk about when they lose.

I can tell you for sure that your opinion about the Music City Miracle is wrong. I was at the game and Wycheck's pass to Dyson was correctly ruled a legal lateral after many booth reviews from multiple angles. It was the most awesome sporting event I've ever witnessed in person. Being there was truly amazing and experiencing the emotion with everyone else in the sold out stadium was incredible. :D

I think it's sad people don't seem to have any respect for the concept of a long term coach anymore. Fisher's time may be up in Nashville, but to simply want him out because he hasn't won anything is sad. I think the question for any coach should be can he lead the team in the right direction and are they making progress. If the answer is no, then a change is probably needed.

This will be fun. I always like it when the young QB wants to take the reign of "best" or "one of the best" from the older experienced guy with a track record.

My favorite regular season matchup of all time was old man Joe Montana (maybe 35 at the time) with the KC Chiefs vs. the younger Steve Young and the 49ers. Montana and the Chiefs went on to win the regular season game, but it was Steve Young, the "younger" QB with a lot left to prove who went on to win the Super Bowl that year and throw six touchdowns.

In most contests of youth vs. experience, youth usually ends up winning. Football is not golf or bowling, so it's a young sport which is very unforgiving to any player (especially QBs and running backs) who are showing even the slightest hint of age. Look at Peyton Manning, for instance. He was at the big game last year, but this year just 10 months later, all those years and his natural aging of his body has taken its toll. Those small hits on him this season do more damage than those seemingly devastating hits did on him when he was younger.

And it doesn't get any easier for the likes of Manning, and Favre before that. I don't think Favre will even get to a big game. And as for Manning, it's now or never. I would like to see him get one more before he retires.

Of course Favre is not going to see another superbowl. That's a given.

I couldn't care less about Manning. If he wins or loses. I'd rather him lose. I would like to see Brady get another ring:)

I was with my wife, who at the time was my girlfriend, and my parents. My mom and dad have season tickets and when we still lived in TN we went to games with them all the time. The stadium was rocking as we all screamed for DEFENSE during the last Bills drive. When they scored to take lead with just a few seconds remaining that place went dead quiet. I mean it was eerie how silent it was as over 65,000 people seemed to be in disbelief. Surprisingly, no one started to leave. It was almost like everyone was frozen with shock. I remember that I and everyone around us was sitting down during that final kick off. When Wycheck threw the pass the cheers started, but they were hesitant rally cries as people were afraid to get there hopes up. Then as Dyson took off down the sideline every person seemed to jump to their feet at the exact same time. When he crossed the goal line it was like a bomb went off in that place. I mean people who didn't even know each other were hugging and jumping up and down. :D

Then of course we all got quiet again as the officials started looking at the review footage to determine if it was a forward pass. When they came out and announced that there was no penalty on the play and the TD would stand as called the place blew up all over again. We partied hard in Nashville that night.

But, the story doesn't have a happy ending. For you see, my wife is from St. Louis, and if you'll recall what happened in the Super Bowl that year....

Let's just say she was the only Rams fan in a room full of us at a Titan's watching party.

I didn't talk to her for about an hour after the game was over and that was for her own good. She and her family still give me grief about that Super Bowl to this day. :(

Those guys are both legends with their numbers and even though neither are from the teams I root for, it would be nice to see them get one more. Back in the day in a previous generation before Manning and Brady, I really didn't like Denver but I had to admit Elway had a great career and in the very end, he added two rings which to some qualified him as a great player.

If Elway never won in the Super Bowl, it would be hard pressed for anybody to say he was not great.

I think Manning is far more than two Super Bowl appearances with one win. He got so close other times to getting there and in the years when he and Brady ruled football as far as the QB position, it was Manning who I considered the bigger threat. Only now would I imagine my mediocre Raiders or 49ers being in a position to actually beat Indy, but even then that's a stretch.

That being said I think if Indy has a bad season by the time it's over, or far less than expected, it's time the team start bringing in a new starter into the QB positon.

What made the 49ers great for such a long stretch was they knew when to pull out older 30-ish players like Montana and Craig, even though they were at one time the best in the league.

For Indy, I say start planning on imagining the team post-Manning. Nobody can expect him to play well into his late-30s like Favre did. Brett Favre and some great games he had in his late-30s is a total anomaly in today's far more physical football. Gone are the days of relying on a George Blanda or Steve DeBerg. The size and speed of today's defenses make it near impossible to last that long if you are the target.

Probably one of the best stories in football history how they got that win and being there, i could only imagine how high your emotions were at that moment. Such a tough loss against the Rams though. 1 yard determined the whole game. Steve McNair did an awesome job. Too bad he couldn't get that ring.

Yeah, its all about the $$$$
America's Team (yak) and America's Player (double yak)
Cowboys v. Peyton of the Manning Royalty

I guess they have to show the Cowboys and Peyton now since neither will be available to be seen during the playoffs

And WTF??
We get Jim Mora, Jr as an announcer?!??
Brilliant

Big slap in the face for the NFC South

We touched on this briefly in Thursday’s mailbag on the Atlanta Falcons. But I think it’s worth looking at this again. That’s mainly because, after talking to a lot of different people with the Falcons and Buccaneers, they are seeing red.

Way too much of it. Let’s look over at the506.com, a website that does a great job showing which NFL games will be televised in which markets across the country. Look at the map for the late-afternoon time slot and you’ll see red, too.

Red’s the color that’s used to depict where the game between Dallas and Indianapolis will be shown. Just looking quickly at the map, I’m estimating the Cowboys and Colts will be seen in 80 to 90 percent of the country.

Now, look for the blue -- you may have to squint. The areas in blue are where the game between the Falcons and Buccaneers will be shown.

Basically, Tampa Bay and Atlanta will air in Georgia and large parts of Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana. We all know about the local television blackouts Tampa Bay has faced all season, the game will be shown in Florida only down in the Naples area.

So what’s wrong with this picture? And why is the brass with the Falcons and the Buccaneers upset about it?

Well, it’s pretty obvious. Dallas is not a very good team and Indianapolis is struggling, at least by its own standards, this season. Yet the NFL and Fox television have elected to show the Cowboys and Colts to most of the country in this time slot. I guess chaos and Peyton Manning sell and a game between two good teams with all sorts of playoff indications doesn’t matter.

That’s more than a little bit of a shame. I often get letters from fans talking about how the NFC South doesn’t get enough “respect’’ on a national level. I usually prefer to use the word “attention." But, in this case, I’ll go with respect and attention.

The slight of Tampa Bay and Atlanta this week is blatant and it shows a lack of respect and attention for the NFC South. At least on paper, the Buccaneers against Falcons is the best game in this time slot.

Too bad most of America won’t get to see it.

Cowboys are so last season as far as how they play. But watch out for them in the future for some time.

Manning seems to be in decline but if he gets into the big game, he could surprise everybody. We all know he wants to make up for last year and he could use one more big push to do, whatever. His spot in HoF is secure and has been even before he won Super Bowl.

I hope he eventually knows when to quit and does not end up like 40 something Favre. On ABC news radio, it was reported Favre is still the NFL's #1 advertising draw, even after the scandal. Peyton is #2.

The scandal Favre has won't hurt him one bit compared to if he had actually physically done something to the lady who is complaining.

Whoa... that's some serious fugliness going on there with the Green Bay throwbacks

e.png

And in other news, Favre is out of his game with a shoulder injury on the 3rd play

Looks like the Vikings are better off without him... 31-7 at the half
Jackson's stats look pretty good with a hefty rating to boot

f.png

Favre got really messed up on that play. That helmet to helmet hit from behind has got to hurt. I hope he's OK. I wouldn't be surprised if that's it for his season.

Vick took a similarly hard hit this season and Big Ben got drilled like that a couple of times in previous seasons but they recovered, but they are younger.

It's beginning to get stupid for Favre to be out there getting hit like that and it's pretty much an assumption of risk as these injuries, especially head injuries are cumulative.

Falcons v. Bucs
14-14 at the half in a hard fought game
Things are getting really chippy

Ryan throws a pick, so our turnover streak ends
But this one is likely to go to the wire

That is ok, we get Joe I hate everything about the cowboys buck. I can't stand this guy.

Cowboys all good in my book! :)

The Colts just came back from death.

Well they do suck. They could not even get into the end zone without help.

Grimes played a helluva game for the Falcons
His pick sealed the deal

I question the officials and the home cooking
They even stopped to take the clock for 3:00 to 2:45 and announced "please let the clock run at appropriate times"

And then lack of class by the Tampa QB Freeman with the cheap shot on the sideline after the pick

Falcons 10-2
Big road win in a tough game

I guess you were on edge a bit today ... good for Atlanta, that kick return was key to winning the game.
