Patriots played lights out last night and exposed the Jets, but I honestly doubt the Pats are that good, or the Jets are that bad. We saw it with the Eagles earlier when Vick had his monster game. Sometimes the stars align and it all works. Other days they don't, and you struggle. Remember, this is the same team that got blown out by Cleveland 34-14 in Week 9.

There are 32 teams in the league, and any of them are capable of beating the other on any given Sunday, even in a blowout. (except the Lions)

fixed the part in bold for you.

That Cleveland game was a classic trap game. The young Pats D was riding high on a 6-1 record and everyone was calling them the best team in the league, and they laid a complete egg. Belichick pretty much beat their asses after that week, and they have been lights out ever since.

Brady has been on a complete tear. He's playing the best football of his career this year (yes, better than 2007). The NFL MVP is his award to lose. In the four games since the Cleveland game, he is 91/124, 1203 yards, 13 td, 0 int, for a 138.6 rating.

Man, I never saw an ass raping like that. Totally outplayed and outcoached.

Makes me feel a bit better.

I remember how that story you quoted ends.

Do you see it yet? He just won his 26th straight home game. That's a new NFL record.

21/29, 326 yards, 4 td, 0 int, 148.9 rating tonight

in his last 7 games, 17 touchdowns and 0 interceptions.

now for the season he has 3,029 yards, 27 touchdowns (most in nfl), 4 ints, and a 109.5 rating (most in nfl).

he's going to run away with the mvp award.

When Favre had some great late career numbers, I thought it would mean he would carry off another Lombardi trophy. So far, that has not been the case. The Favre who followed through and won a Super Bowl is the Favre in his early part of his career, not the later Favre, and this may be the case with Brady, too.

But I hope Brady can pull off an "Elway" and finish his career with back to back Super Bowls (maybe this year and next?) which would give him the tidy number of five Super Bowl wins and six appearances. I think it was possible with Favre in his mid-30s, and it is still possible with Brady. But look at the context of other great teams out there he has to beat.

Taking out the Jets, who many thought were the best in the AFC (and who can still finish with the #1 record) went a long way to show all of us that this Tom Brady has the same crazy skills he had in the early-2000s to mid-2000s.

A dream Super Bowl for fans of old players like me would be a final career Super Bowl between NE and Minnesota, Brady vs. Favre for old times sake. And don't forget an AFC championship or two between Brady and Peyton Manning (the guy with the rings vs. the guy with the records).

My instincts still put my money on Rivers, Brees, Romo, Vick, Ryan, and Sanchez to be the dominant guys over the next five or so years in the QB position. We may see a couple of Super Bowl appearances from the younger Manning before he retires.

I think on a good day, a 35 year old QB can do the same as a 25 year old QB, but in the NFL, game after game with cumulative injuries and longer time to heal, it just gets harder each year.

Brady on Monday night did look like the same guy though in his first Super Bowl and when America got introduced to what would be one of the best of his class/generation of NFL players.

My hopes for a dream superbowl ended with the retirement of Warner. Last year I so wanted to see a Cardinals vs. Vikes Superbowl. Now that would have been truly awesome to watch, knowing full well that either Warner or Favre could have walked away from the game with a Championship win being their last game.

Alas, it wasn't meant to be. :(

That would have been a great one. Unless Warner comes back from the old age home, it won't happen (he was 36 or so, right?).

I hope that big hit on Favre wasn't his last play in the NFL, or if it wasn't the last play, that he gets back into the best form he can and ends his career on a high note and at the very least a win.

If Favre was so worried about ending on a high note he would have left 3 years ago. Each game now that he plays he just makes himself look worse.

I know you are right, but if anybody over 40 can do something great, if even that means getting into the playoffs, it would be him. That in itself would be its own story. It would be akin to the Kevin Costner movie, "For the Love of the Game".

I have more confidence in Favre than other extremely old QBs of the past like Testaverde or DeBerg. But I think Favre's days are over for real, this time. We could tell that a much younger Peyton Manning does not look the same even though he's still good, but Favre's just plain old broken and battered. He is smart and does have experience and it's got him this far. I can't think of any QB right now who would be foolish enough, let alone talented enough, to play until age 40.

QBs who played into their mid-30s like Aikman made their mark and knew when to get out. Each year past that time becomes far harder to stay healthy and produce. Again, it's not golf, it's professional football and guys are paid a very big sum of money to put the hit on you. It's simply not worth it to play five more years and possibly increase your chances of health issues after football and possibly a shorter lifespan. NFL players have had a notoriously short lifespan, regardless of position. Average life expectancy is 55 and 52 for big linemen.

Favre has always been his own worst enemy
He has likely lost as many games, especially later in his career, by being reckless as he has won being the "gunslinger"

Favre only cares about himself and his streak, he got his coach fired because of it and he is destroying the Vikings from the inside out.

Ten years ago, his recklessness could be compensated by his incredible talent. People would have said, "He could make something out of nothing".

What worked for him in 2000, or 1998, or before just won't anymore. His passes are slower today, he can't scramble like he used to, and small hits on him shake him up easily. And as for big hits, that's just too scary to imagine. It's a shame to see him now.

That's why it's called a "dream". ;)

You are correct, the most we could have hoped for would have been an NFC Championship game.

When Warner was out of the Cardinals' contract for a short time, he could have gone to many different AFC teams. I just read he could have gone to the 49ers and that may have been a good match. At least then they would probably dare to hope for better than 8-8 or 9-7. He would have been good for the Raiders, too.

At least he could say he was a winner in perhaps the greatest Super Bowl of all time.

If he did that he would go down as the undisputed greatest qb of all time.

He's so much better. He now has those 3 rings and 10 years of experience. So much more knowledge. That 4th & 3 td to Deion Branch in the 1st quarter was on an audible. 2001 Tom Brady with this team would have had no chance against those Jets last night. What we are seeing this year from Tom is truly remarkable. The only returning starter on that offense from last year is Welker. Everyone else is new. Although the stats don't show this, I think he is playing better this year than he did in 2007. He is in his prime right now.

My instincts still put my money on Rivers, Brees, Romo, Vick, Ryan, and Sanchez to be the dominant guys over the next five or so years in the QB position. We may see a couple of Super Bowl appearances from the younger Manning before he retires.

I agree on Rivers, Brees, and Ryan. Not sure about Vick, but its possible. Romo is massively overrated and I don't think Sanchez is that great. Although he did throw a perfect pass to James Sanders last night.[/QUOTE]

I see Ryan as the same type QB as Brady
Not near the level of Brady yet, but growing in that mold and style
He is cool and has lead the Falcons to a number of late game wins

Brady may be the clear MVP, but Ryan deserves some nods in his direction
Stat-wise Rivers may be having a great year, but his team is struggling

Brees is a great QB in his own right and has a ring
What he did in San Diego and now New Orleans is awesome

I hope Ryan isn't one of those guys who has a stellar year or two and then is never heard from much again. But I have a feeling Ryan and Sanchez, and others in the same age group in different positions, will be who we see as dominant for the better part of the next ten years.

Physically, any QB is at their peak as a rookie or second year, but mentally they are at their best near the end of their careers due to all the experience they have.

If Ryan meets either an experienced Peyton Manning or Tom Brady in the Super Bowl, it will be like when those older guys faced the now retired QB greats of a generation ago who are now in their 40s.

We didn't know much about a Peyton Manning or a Tom Brady when they became starters, but they both started out like Ryan is now, and the fans expected big things to come. Manning and Brady didn't disappoint and I hope Ryan has his own, long legacy in the NFL.

I like Ryan, and Sanchez, and if everything lines up as it has been going, they are going to see each other a couple of times in the Super Bowl in their careers. I have never seen the Jets or Falcons at or near the top in the NFL so it's exciting to see a slight change of guard. But as we saw last night, the Patriots are here to stay, and even after Brady, they have the talent to get far with even a mediocre QB after Brady.

NE has a great D when they are on fire and some teams have gone the distance on just that (Bucs, Ravens, and '87 Redskins who all won the Super Bowl without a top rated QB with 82.5, 70.2, and 69.4 career ratings, respectively ... and that's QBs Brad Johnson, Trent Dilfer, and Doug Williams who all benefited from teams with great Ds).

<snip comments>

I am not enamored with Sanchez, but I think Ryan is asked to do a lot more for the Falcons than Sanchez is for the Jets.

But 2 that haven't been mentioned are Freeman for the Bucs and Bradford for the Rams. Both have tremendous upsides and could be game changers.

Isn't great to see the new talent?

I think Sanchez is the best young AFC QB, but as you see the QB new talent is more in the NFC.

Just like in baseball, it's fun to try and predict who will be the next group of dominant players in their postions. But in the NFL, injuries can take out a player for an entire season and even shorten their career. If Atlanta can hang onto Ryan and he stays healthy and stays with Atlanta, then you have a franchise player for a long time.

That being said, Atlanta's D has better stay great or at the very least above average during that whole period of time and the rest of the team better keep up somewhat lest Atlanta become like a mediocre Chargers (even with one of the most highly rated career passers year after year in Rivers).

Talking about Atlanta and sports, even a great all around team won't guarantee multiple championships and the seemingly untouchable 1990s Braves only won one championship in their respective sport.

The fans certainly seem to have forgiven Vick

NEW YORK -- Michael Vick leads Pro Bowl voting 1½ years after he was released from prison.

The league said Wednesday the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback had 729,838 fan votes, 38,692 more than second-place Peyton Manning. Manning topped the balloting two weeks ago before being surpassed by Vick.

It's the latest evidence many fans seem willing to forgive Vick for the vicious dogfighting operation that sent him to prison for 18 months -- and embrace his stunning return to NFL stardom. A backup to start the season, Vick has led the Eagles to first place in the NFC East, accounting for 21 touchdowns and throwing just two interceptions.

While Vick is having a good season, I think Brady is head and shoulders above everyone at the QB position, and Manning at #2 is laughable this year

Good for Vick as he has lived up to the hype that followed him since rookie year.

As for Manning, he is old (not just older) and slower for sure, but still Manning on a bad day is better than most starting QBs on a good day. It's just that he does not have proper backup on offense and Indy's defense is not the scary wall of muscle it used to be.

Look at Manning's career QB rating which is near the all time best. He's still one scary guy but I think this is his last good season. He will not likely recover into the guy who threw 4,000 yard seasons year after year and get all those TDs and convert all those third downs.

He could go like Favre and do a few extra, bad seasons and make himself look like a total fool and have us all beg to have him retire, or he could go out while he is still a great QB and be remembered as a guy who played hard and did well from start of career to finish.

Few things look as bad as somebody who is just a tad bit too old, or like Favre way too old, trying to somehow cheat the aging process. When and if Favre throws twice as many interceptions or gets sacked twice as much as he has in total TDs, his own fans will be booing him.

Not a bad idea in my opinion
The Jets still have a lot to play for, and they need a short memory on this one
One game doesn't define a team, for good or bad

Jets bury ball, put Patriots game to bed

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- The New York Jets have buried Monday night's game -- literally.

Jets coach Rex Ryan brought his team outside before Wednesday's team meeting and placed a ball from the 45-3 loss to the New England Patriots into an awaiting hole next to the practice field.

"We were shocked," cornerback Darrelle Revis said. "Nobody was saying anything."

Several players said they never had seen anything like that before from a coach, but they said Ryan's unorthodox ball-burying stunt hammered home the point as the Jets began preparation for Sunday's home game against the Miami Dolphins.
