Market research surveys can certainly be hit-or-miss when it comes to revealing companies' future product plans, but a new one from satellite TV provider DirecTV dug up by Engadget hints at the intriguing possibility of the company's "NFL Sunday Ticket" sports package being made available through the new Apple TV as well as a number of other devices.
According to a tipster, some of the questions asking about potential pricing setups indicated the digital version would be available via currently unsupported devices including internet connected Blu-ray players & TVs, "game machines," Apple TV, Roku and Boxee.
Such a move to push live streaming content to the Apple TV would mark a significant expansion of the device's capabilities. And while the service would presumably be offered as a menu option on the Apple TV in a similar manner to Netflix, the existing NFL Sunday Ticket iOS applications demonstrate how such content could be relatively easily moved to the new Apple TV should Apple decide to open up the platform to third-party applications.

In the United States, the traditional NFL Sunday Ticket TV package is available exclusively through DirecTV, making it one of the satellite television provider's key selling points for consumers. In addition to offering access via their set-top boxes, DirectTV also offers "NFL Sunday Ticket To-Go" for both its traditional subscribers and non-subscribers alike, allowing them to view content on their computers and on mobile devices such as the iPad and iPhone.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148a Safari/6533.18.5)

I'd go buy an Apple TV just for this.

Wonder what the price point would be

I think the current rate for non-DirecTV subscribers to get the internet access to the NFL Sunday Ticket is $350. That's too much, IMO. But it could go down if the subscriber numbers shoot up from new distribution models. I think, could be wrong, but think, the MLB package is about $150 for the season. If DirecTV and The NFL can go there. I'm in.

I could definitely see an update sometime next year adding lots of live streaming channels, the biggest problem will be the broadcasters worrying that they will become obsolete and the content will just go straight to Apple TV or equivalents.

Forget DirectTV, the NFL should just offer a NFL App / Channel to anyone.

I'd easily pay $5 to watch a game of my choice, or say $100 for the whole season, all games.

Then I could also get rid of cable....finally.

I'll file this in my "too good to be true" folder - whose name recently changed from "omg I want."

While they are my best ISP option, live sports is the one thing keeping me from dropping my cable provider (Comcast) altogether.

Like the iPhone and AT&T, it's time for Sunday Ticket to be made available without having to subscribe to DirecTV. The Sunday Ticket to go was a great start. This would be even cooler and a coup for Apple.

RedZone!

Just give me the option to get RedZone on my AppleTV. I don't want to pay, and won't pay, $300 for football/yr. I will pay you $70 for RedZone tho!

The NFL Sunday Ticket-To Go has been an EPIC FAIL. They have had so many problems and complaints. I had it for a month and cancelled. Games would lag and freeze. Sometimes, they wouldn't even stream at all. Luckily, I got my money back. I'll never bother with that again.

Can I ask a question that I reckon most of you would be able to answer?
I know the apple tv is only hdmi output--but I have an older projection tv that only has rca inputs.
Is there a conversion cord/box or something that I can use to hook up an atv to this tv? If so, how much?/links?

Thanks!

If this will happen at all it has to be in cooperation with DirecTV since they have exclusive rights to NFL Sunday Ticket. Which means you will likely have to pay the full amount + whatever fee's (most likely to-go) in order to get this.

DirecTV offers a no (DirecTV) subscription PC/digital only version for the full unsubsidized cost, the digital version is not HD quality though.

American satellite provider DirecTV has exclusive rights to NFL Sunday Ticket in the United States until the contract expires at the end of the 2014-15 season.

I would think Direct TV would do anything in it's power to block this no? they use the NFL package as a way to get subscribers to their sattelite cable service. It's probably their main selling tool.

If I could use it to Live Stream the SuperBowl, and if they worked a deal with the NCAA for bowl games I could cancel Cable altogether and not even need to put up an antenna.

When will the UK see some content love? We don't even have iTunes rentable TV shows! It wouldnt be so bad if Netflix had come to the UK like reports said they might in 2010.

I have ZERO interest in the NFL or sports in general, but this is a GREAT step forward for content like this. Hope live news channels are next!!! I want to get rid of my cable altogether...

Just give us 3rd-party apps already! :D

Considering DirecTV has exclusive rights to it till the 2014-15 season they can't do anything till then without teaming up with DirecTV. Which means either pay the full $375 for digital only which is non-hd, or be a DTV subscriber and add it to your plan for a lower rate.

funny this rumor comes down...I have directv NFL Ticket and recently tried to see if I could airplay nfl ticket to go content to my ATV (using airvideoenabler on the iPad)...kept on getting HDMI content errors but a real app would be awesome!

I didn't think you could do this unless you are a DirecTV subscriber. This is interesting...but too expensive.

EDIT: Everything I saw indicates you need to have DirectTV AND Sunday Ticket AND pay extra to watch on the computer/iPhone/iPad (at least in the US). This is a total rip off.

I don't want cable TV, but I would pay for something like this - but not $350 plus the cost of DirecTV plus the cost to get access from a computer/mobile device. I'd pay for MLB.tv if I could get in market games. Much more reasonable.
