As exciting as it sounds I can't see this happening.. The main snag up will certainly be the internal discussion of what to charge.. I'm a current D* subscriber and right now the NFL Sunday ticket for early renewal is $49.99 x 6 payments, plus another $9.99 x 5 for the ability to watch on laptop, iphone, ipad... Since D* has exclusive rights I dare imagine what they would want to charge for Sunday Ticket to customers who aren't D* subscribers...

Nice! I'd be very interested in this.

The NFL Sunday Ticket-To Go has been an EPIC FAIL. They have had so many problems and complaints. I had it for a month and cancelled. Games would lag and freeze. Sometimes, they wouldn't even stream at all. Luckily, I got my money back. I'll never bother with that again.

This hasn't been my experience at all. I've had tremendous luck with the program on my MBP and Iphone. In fact on Sunday I drove from Paso Robles, CA to Sacramento, CA with it streaming to my iphone. I was listening to the redzone channel (not watching while driving) and it only hiccuped 2-3 times where reception was poor. I was amazed. If they can replicate the video quality, reliability and user interface of the web based version I'll definitely upgrade from my old apple tv to the newer one. This will also be the end of ANY television service (other than free over the air digital) to my house.

This sounds too good to be true. Is Direct TV really going to give up the one thing that I can't get anywhere else? If this happens I can finally cut out DTV altogether. This would rock if it happens. But I'm skeptical.

In the United States, the traditional NFL Sunday Ticket TV package is available exclusively through DirecTV, making it one of the satellite television provider's key selling points for consumers. In addition to offering access via their set-top boxes, DirectTV also offers "NFL Sunday Ticket To-Go" for both its traditional subscribers and non-subscribers alike, allowing them to view content on their computers and on mobile devices such as the iPad and iPhone.

Just want to reiterate becasue a lot of people are missing the facts. You currently can watch the "NFL Sunday Ticket To-Go" WITHOUT a subscription to DirecTV. The $350 is it. No subscription required.

Not sure I get the point. Surely this would be part of the To Go package or maybe AppleTV is getting RedZone, not the full ST package. That would make more sense since not all cable outlets offer the RZ channel.

I think the current rate for non-DirecTV subscribers to get the internet access to the NFL Sunday Ticket is $350. That's too much, IMO. But it could go down if the subscriber numbers shoot up from new distribution models. I think, could be wrong, but think, the MLB package is about $150 for the season. If DirecTV and The NFL can go there. I'm in.

I used to think the same thing until a couple years ago when I went to a NFL game and sat on the 40 yard line, 3 rows back from the visitor bench. EACH seat was $250. We bought 4. I could not believe that the prices actually WENT UP FROM THERE the closer you got to the field and the 50 yard line.

$350 dollars is cheap if you want the experience of being at the game (and you see WAY more of it on TV than at the actual game).

Cable companies are loosing so many customers that they may have to think outside the box to survive.

I'd go buy an Apple TV just for this.

same here!

DirecTV charges the same thing for people who don't subscribe to Direct TV. It's $350 regardless and you don't have to subscribe to Directv anymore to get it. However, if you do subscribe to Directv they offer specials that allow you to get it cheaper but you'll have to extend your contract for another 2 years.

+1

Like the iPhone and AT&T, it's time for Sunday Ticket to be made available without having to subscribe to DirecTV. The Sunday Ticket to go was a great start. This would be even cooler and a coup for Apple.

The primary reason we have DirecTV is for Sunday Ticket. From their own documentation, it is my understanding that a subscription to DirecTV is required for the To Go package (formerly called Super Fan). I fail to understand why its inclusion on Apple TV would be such a good idea, as you will also have the satellite TV box in your house as well. I mean, why have two devices to view the same content?

Also, as such, the To-Go package currently costs $100, so having it completely separate and at a price point of only $150 should be considered a non-starter IMHO. I don't see DirecTV going that route, unless Apple can provide some extremely powerful leverage.

For me, it was a horrible experience. I could not rely on it on my Macbook Pro. I started reading some Direc TV forums and A LOT of people were having problems and cancelling. When I called and they said I could cancel and get my money back, I was under the impression they were getting sick of the same calls with the same problems. -- Even high profile sportswriters on Twitter were complaining about the To-Go service.

I can't imagine my life without Sunday Ticket. Live outside the state of "my team" and only got 2 games years ago when I didnt have it. Now that I do, I get every game.

I always get a deal too so that helps price wise

The answer that link provided was incorrect. Non DirecTV subscribers are eligible to purchase it. They just have to pay more for the service.

Not that big of a deal...

You can watch every single NFL game on the internet right now. Sure it won't be the greatest quality (SD), but it is very watchable and free.

F the Sunday Ticket.

Would love this too.

But don't get your hopes up. Besides the Dish & NFL agreement which appears to limit the offering to Dish subscribers only (or those who buy Dish's non-sub ticket) there is also the NFL and Comcast to contend with.

I suspect both NFL and Comcast would move to block this unless Dish was clever enough to add the "Apple TV" to it's contact agreement. Their lawyers probably are not that smart. Meanwhile, Comcast isn't going to want this in their markets and would try their best to stifle any such move.

And lastly, the NFL isn't noted for being technically smart and would likely not want to piss off Dish and Comcast by a move toward Apple.

I just can't see this happening in the near term. Meanwhile, these type of lock-ins are getting FCC attention and it would not surprise me if some move from the Feds to break these exclusive agreements were to happen. Of course, that presumes that the Democrats still control the FCC.

It's an interesting time we live in as the content providers and cable companies struggle to figure out how to make money in the new-world-order of the internet.

I'd love to see this come out. Football is one of the last reasons why I still subscribe to cable. Now if only the NFL would get rid of the stupid blackout rule, then I'd cancel my season tickets, cancel my cable, and sign up for this saving a ton of money every year.

This is from wikipedia:

Contract extension

On March 23, 2009, it was announced that DirecTV paid $4 billion to extend its exclusive contract for NFL Sunday Ticket until 2014.[1] The contract extension also calls for the establishment of an online version of NFL Sunday Ticket, for non-DirecTV subscribers by 2012

I wonder if this amounts to a direct subscription to the package without directv or if it is in fact the directv package with the ability to stream to an iOS device similar to the on the go package that already exists and was mentioned in the article?

I hope NHL Center Ice gets the same treatment with Appletv.

Also, I wonder if the option to purchase individual games might become an option if this happens?

This would be cool but the pricing is ridiculous. I would rather have a pay per view model then an all or nothing kind of deal like this is.

$40 a month is just too much. It is nearly the same price as getting basic cable, in which you will get the games that are already over the air plus whatever is on ESPN.

Just keep these buffet style plans but add a service to just select individual games to watch for $4 or $5.
