Ahhh, Cambridgeside....reminds me of my days at MIT. Back then I scoffed at the few Mac users (MIT was mostly Unix, at least back then). I wonder how popular Macs are at MIT now that they have OS X? I would imagine there's a high percentage of Linux users at MIT and a rapidly increasing percentage of OS X users, but that's just a guess.
 
Microcenter, Chicago: No line, a sorry air of anti-climax, plus a free 64 meg flash memory thing, T-shirt, AND mousepad.

All in all, not a bad haul, even if it had the festive atmosphere of a poorly-attended wake.

nice! for me, it was just the lowest eMac so the additional saving would have been nice, but not overwhelming... ($50+)

tsmit, I was amused to see myself in a couple of your blurry photos. Did the security give you trouble? They were harassing some Apple Store guys for trying to take pictures of the line... All in all, I got there at 7-ish and didn't have to wait too long once the doors opened. Reading other people's posts, I'm glad we didn't have to wait outside like some did.
 
So far, so good.

Came home from an afternoon drive to find my 10.3 5-pack on the doorstep. I'm typing this on my "naked cube", a modified 450MHz cube with a Radeon 7000 and 1.25G of RAM.

Performance is snappy, and so far the "upgrade" option hasn't trashed anything. I will spend some more time with it tomorrow, but this seems to be the smoothest upgrade I've done in some time.
 
Back from the St. Louis, MO Apple Store!

The Apple Store in West County was well attended. I got there around 7:35PM and they had quite a long line waiting to get in. I was expecting maybe 30 or 40 people, but it was more than double that.

I asked about getting a combo student discount and the 10% off and two different people told me "Nope, it's only one or the other." So if you got both, I really don't think that was supposed to happen. Someone is gonna be kinda pissed when they do their bookkeeping later. Hehe....

I wish I thought to drop in at my local Best Buy and CompUSA. They were on my ride back home, but I didn't even realize they might also be giving things away. Wonder if one of 'em will still have a mousepad to give me tomorrow?

I did, however, go all out and picked up one of the only dual 2Ghz G5 towers they had in stock! Now, I just have to make sure I can get my dual 1.42Ghz G4 sold to help pay for this puppy! Even with the 10% off, it's quite a chunk on my credit card!
 
I went down to Springboard Media in Philadelphia, one of two downtown stores having a launch event. Pretty good turn out it seemed, free pizza, djs, demos of panther and also a person on hand giving demos and tips of Final Cut 4.

The give-aways though seem to be the best reported so far. With purchase of Panther, you got your mouse pad, and a $20 gift certificate. Purchase also entered you to win a $100 gift certificate and an iPod.
 
AAARRRRGHHH!!

My FedEx shipment didn't come today!?!?!

I called FedEx only to find out that it will show up tomorrow.....looks like I'll at least get my shipping charge back, but it still sucks.
 
Pather is excellent

Got my copy at 8pm.

My friends thought I was extremely sad in rushing to buy an OS...

Anyway, well worth the money. The interface is extremely nice and performance is better - I have a G3 iBook 800.

The Finder is a breath of fresh air, and expose is just, well, brilliant.
 
SoHo Store

This year there was just one line around the block at the SoHo store, instead of two for Jaguar. I arrived fairly close to 8:00, and even then it was 20 minutes wait to get in.

This store was giving out wrapping paper designed by Rex Ray and the dog tags, and at various points they pitched out black t-shirts. Somehow I managed to miss out on the tags and the shirt. Must have been the distraction of buying this new PowerBook G4 15-inch 1.25 Ghz. It's a beautiful machine, and sweeter still at 10% off (which covered the AppleCare too).

FYI, Panther was not pre-installed on it.
 
Much like last year - the mousepad and t shirt will nominally for non-apple owned retail stores selling the goods.

I bought Jaguar from a mac shop local to me and got the t shirt + mousepad + .mac plastic CD holder. I was told by friends who went to the actual apple store that evening that they got none of the above.
 
I'm using my PC to post this because I'm installing Panther right now.

I went to the Bellevue (Seattle) Apple Store. Everyone who went in to the Apple store got dog tags, purchase wasn't required.

Also, didn't see this elsewhere but the store was giving away an iMac to one winner out of all those that came to the Panther Event. The guy at the front said about 175 people had come and when I left it looked like another 100 were waiting to get in.

I'm not hopeful but those odds are better than lotto. :D
 
now with iSight!

Got back from the Burlingame store a little while ago. The line was about 150 feet down the block, but it was a beautiful warm evening so everybody was enjoying themselves. Got in at about 8:20, and after lusting over the new 15" powerbooks, (don't tell my TiBook! It'll be jealous!) I ended up getting an iSight and Panther. I had seen the iSight in action before, but now that I can really use it, I'm really, really impressed.

So, after that thrill wears off, I'm gonna have to think about installing Panther. 10.2 has been pretty good for me, so I may break tradition and just do an upgrade install; I'll probably wait til tomorrow to see what the damage reports say.

UTC? Thought Fashion Valley was the only one in San Diego...shows how much *I* know!

Fashion Valley was great...total geekfest, of course..lots of fun to take the metal plate off of the G5's and look at the innards...most impressive! And, of course, I got my dog tags!:D

Ha! Well, you beat me, then. An opening of a new store AND Panther release...I bow to your greatness. :)

I got a little extra bonus, however, not knowing about the UTC event; I ran into my favorite School Board member, Fran Zimmerman. (www.franzimmerman.com) I once went to her house to fix her printer...which was connected to her iMac. Bless her heart..she's a Mac geek!:D

Many people here at MIT use Macs now. In fact, of my friends, MORE than half of them own at least a Mac, and many of those use them as primary computers. Quite a bit of Linux users, and Windows is the focus of many jokes around here (especially in the I/S department, where I work part-time). Unfortunately, course 6 still is mostly Windows-based, so I had to buy Virtual PC :(

At the beginning of the year, a small set of my friends and I got together for a "PowerBook party" .. (see attached picture .. I'm the one on the far left).

Anyway, back on topic .. the CambridgeSide one was fairly good. There was quite a line (as with most stores, I'm sure) and the dog tags are pretty cool. I just bought my copy of Panther on the education store and I can't wait to get it next week!

Palo Alto was great

I'm just back from the Palo Alto store, and the event was wonderful.

I didn't go in for Panther, as I couldn't get the edu discount (will get it at the Stanford Bookstore tomorrow).

I went with a friend who used to work on the OS 9 team from Apple, and he pointed out tons of pretty high up folks who were there (The grandpappy of plain talk was doing card tricks outside for those waiting in line, several of the top OS X people were there, etc.).

The lines were much better handled, and my friend only had to wait a few minutes to purchase Panther (vs. my 2 1/2 hour wait last year for Jag).

Nice stuff all around, and a set of dog tags just for showing my face.
