no, that is the normal bag, at least in north michigan ave.

All in all, not a bad haul, even if it had the festive atmosphere of a poorly-attended wake.

aww, microcenter, where in chicago??? no tees or mousepads in michigan ave ..

Short-Pump

Went up to Richmond with my friend who just got his first Mac, a Powerbook 12 in., on Monday. Got there around 9:00. It was nice, cold though. No problem for the dedicated. Picked up Panther and the Cat-Tags. They're not dog tags. Dog tags are for dogs. I've got a Panther damn it.

Friend of mine drove down from Fairfax since Tyson's is closed and it was a chance to be a bunch of geeks sitting around with Powerbooks and iBook, mine. The folks at Short-Pump are a great bunch.

The place was packed with a security guard standing by to make sure they didn't overcrowd and break fire-code. The line moved pretty swiftly though.

Stayed till almost 11:00. Got home, installed Panther. So much faster. Preview alone is worth it if you ask me. It loads PDFs faster than you can blink, seriously fast.

The apple stores in Taiwan sold out in literally 10 minutes. That's because they only had 3-5 copies per store, with a total of 50 copies for the entire island. There was no discount for anything in the stores either, just a free mouse pad and a free shirt.

They're not going have more copies on the island until next week. So, for me Panther night was big fat bust for me cuz I couldn't get a copy.

"I'm standing in line at the UTC (San Diego) opening...soooooo much geekiness."

Tell me about it, and the glassy eyed zombie look as well.

I never felt so cultish since my early church going days. Do they pump subliminal messages? My frontal lobe is sore.

I got my 10% discount, now I'll have to spend it on therapy with a large orgie party and become "cool" again.

I'm sure it's not always like that at the Apple Store, just these "celebrations" that bring the most dedicated zealots out.

I am displeased that Apple Stores don't accept personal checks allow them to clear and then release the merchandise to the customer. (I transfered money the day before and it would be available Monday for processing)

Some checks have security features that won't allow "instant" purchases because even stores can be crooked now a days.

If it ain't "instant" they don't allow the transaction, which is stupid. Now I have to make a special trip to my bank on a Saturday and drive 3 hours to the Apple Store.

Many people here at MIT use Macs now. In fact, of my friends, MORE than half of them own at least a Mac, and many of those use them as primary computers. Quite a bit of Linux users, and Windows is the focus of many jokes around here (especially in the I/S department, where I work part-time). Unfortunately, course 6 still is mostly Windows-based, so I had to buy Virtual PC :(

Course 6 mostly Windows??!!?? :(

Oh man, I thought they'd be the last ones to go. I thought maybe course 15 might be tempted to run Windows, but everyone else would be still be solidly in Unix? So if classes require the use of Windows, does that mean there's Windows machines on Athena nowi?!!?? What's the mix of machines on Athena?

Man, when I was course 6 (6.1, class of '96), *everything* was in Unix, including all of Athena. Mostly Sun stations. And Course 6 had their own lab(s) with high-powered HP stations. Only a fraction of students had their own PCs (maybe 1/3), since Athena was so good, and those PCs were mostly for gaming. There were a few macs, mostly brought over from high school, and a few Linux users (people ported the Athena environment and login to Linux fairly easily).

Anyways, rock on.

wow, sound slike a great launch for Panther

But I had to work late :-( So there was no way for me get to the Richmond, VA store at all (especially when I was half asleep at the wheel). But I'l go to the CompUSA in norfolk, give panther a test drive, and see if they have the new G4 iBooks. I'm debating if I should go ahead and buy Panther ina few more weeks (before Thanksgving), or just save up and get an iBook with Panther installed (or the emac, since it's a real bragain wit lots of firepower). Which way sould I go guys?

I agree, i went to my local CompUsa around 9 pm and they had no clue that Panther was released at 8. :(

Hi Giaguara. Here's where the Chicago stores are (city and suburbs):

http://www.microcenter.com/at_the_stores/chicago.html

http://www.microcenter.com/at_the_stores/westmont.html

Now that Panther's out, will you change your name to Pantera?

:)

I went to the Oak Brook Apple store. The other store visitors were friendly. I should have dropped by the Micro Center in Westmont though.. it's not far from Oak Brook.

"Day of the Panther" in Tokyo

Hi all,

I went to one of our local stores, Sakura-ya, in Ikebukuro (near where I live) and bought my copy of Panther. Got a nice Apple-logo ink pen as the free gift.

Pen or no pen, I am very happy with the new os. I would say that my iBook G3 600 is pretty useless for all the cool effects (framerate of about 2 with Expose, 0 with fast user switching ) :( but Finder is very nice and speedy even on my machine.

I tried out the new iBook G4 with Panther today and found it very capable. I opened up about 30 Safari windows and tested out Expose and just a minor hit during the transition. 10 - 20 windows had no problems on the system. I do like the new iBook but I simply *hate* the gray material that is used for the palm rest. Even the few hours of use at the store and I could already see the crud buildup. the smooth metalic finish on my iBook does not have that problem. Oh well, rants aside, nice machine. :D

They gave me BOTH! I got the 10% and the edu discount... 15" powerbook with superdrive for $2036!!! YES!!!! Going to go open i now!

Hmmmm.....I was at the Night of Panther at the Southpoint store in Durham, NC (drove 3 hrs from Hickory to be there) and I was told that the 10% discount couldn't be in addition to the edu discount (I'm a college prof). When we ran the numbers, we discovered that the edu discount IS 10%, and since my pre-ordered copy of Panther arrived earlier in the day I decided to go ahead and get a 12" G4 iBook and a 20G iPod. I'm VERY happy for ya, but I'll be miffed if I find I could have gotten an addition 10%. :)

I am PISSED. There are NO Apple stores in Canada! Not even (gasp!) Toronto! I went doen to my local dealer, Carbon Compting, ready to scoop up a G5 at a discount and they didn't even have the Panther demo set up. It took a while, but they eventually did a tour of the OS - but the guy running it said "we just got Panther yesterday, so you people probably know about as much about it as I do." They gave away 10 shirts and offered a 10% discount on books. Zero hardware discounts, justa bunch of people standing in line, waiting to cough up their $180.

Wait, I forgot. Some guy went around one time, handing out cookies.

G4 iBook

Was anyone really suprised at the new ibooks?
the grey looks great on them, and the keyboard feels amazing. better than the powerbooks in my opinion
Still, the powerbooks have class

I'm just back from the Palo Alto store, and the event was wonderful.

I didn't go in for Panther, as I couldn't get the edu discount (will get it at the Stanford Bookstore tomorrow).

I went with a friend who used to work on the OS 9 team from Apple, and he pointed out tons of pretty high up folks who were there (The grandpappy of plain talk was doing card tricks outside for those waiting in line, several of the top OS X people were there, etc.).

The lines were much better handled, and my friend only had to wait a few minutes to purchase Panther (vs. my 2 1/2 hour wait last year for Jag).

Nice stuff all around, and a set of dog tags just for showing my face.

Yeah, I had a great time at Palo Alto. Greg, one of the employees inside the store was incredibly cool and my friends and I just iSighted with other people around the store.:) I love how they clap everytime someone walked out and bought something...I was tempted to pick up a 17" PowerBook, but I saved $3000 and left with just my dog tags:cool: Good luck with the iMac entry, everyone!

That slot-loading drive alone is worth it. I've got an iBook 700 and that tray feels so flimsy I'm always worried I'm going to snap it off, but I do like the old style keys because that transluscence was cool.

No edu discount at South Coast Plaza (Cali)

My buddy and I waited in line for 2 hours, and we finally get to the counter and the girl tells us "Sorry, we don't accept student discounts on software. Go online to get it." Well, of course we ended up NOT buying it because $60 is a lot of money to us poor college students. I was taking a risk buying the software anyway because I own a Beige G3 and was counting on 3rd-party "fixes" to get it working.

I wish we would have known that BEFORE we went. Just 5 months earlier we went to the same store and got our edu discount on our iPods, so who was to think they'd reject us this time around?

And now I hear some stores accepted the edu + 10%! Stupid SCP. I shoulda gone to Fashion Island. -_-

My friend and I took the El into Chicago to attend the event at the N. Michigan Ave. store, which is really an incredibly designed store, even compared to other Apple Stores. It's the first two-story one I've seen (but, remember, it's only the third one I've seen, the other two being in malls).

Waited for about 40 minutes to get in. When you walked in, there were two rows of Apple employees (about 50 total--I was surprised that there were so many). There were tubs filled with the dogtags, on either side.

As the first person in the line entered, the clapping commenced. They kept going until the last person had come through. They were probably clapping a total of five minutes. It was incredible. You walk about fifty feet to the huge staircase, flanked by all these Apple employees in their black Panther t-shirts in an uproar of applause...Very much the climax, and rather exhilirating.

Nicely done.

The Project Manager for Panther, I believe, was the one who conducted the presentation. He did a good job. My friend had his PB and showed up on the guy's iChat list. I tried to get him to send an message, but he wouldn't. Alas.

The video with the guy Omar was pretty good, too, until you watched it a second time, at which point he got annoying.

I wonder when we'll find out about who won the drawing...I imagine if you went to a middle-of-nowhere store, you'd be much better off, because they're giving away one computer per store, correct?

All in all, though, a fun and festive occassion that I thoroughly enjoyed.

10% off a new ipod

I had $460 in Apple store gift certificates.
I fugured this would be a good night to get that ipod I've wanted. Splurged on the 20 gig version with dock. Looks great, and I save $40 on it. Of course I overpayed on the OS X. Probably could have gotten it cheaper elsewhere. But of couse you have shipping....... I guess I did OK. Anyway, I'm happy! It was great to see Mac fans like myself...:D

I have a question. I have a 500Mhz iBook that i plan on installing 10.3 on sometime in the next week, but since it only has a 10gig hd i have a 80gig firewire lacie. and since the gf unit has an iBook as well (much nicer than mine; 900Mhz), i like to be able to start up from my external on her computer and use it every now and then to do more cpu intensive work, like ripping 300 cds or playing some UT on the network and such.
so the point of this is, from a legal standpoint, should i purchase 2 copies of panther, or am i entitled to put it on more than one hard drive (not computer)?
i am sure its cool, but i just wonder about this from a technical standpoint.

I attended the Panther release event at the Chestnut Hill Mall near Newton, MA. Arrived at 5:11pm. My wife had some issues with her iBook, so she got assistance from the Mac Genius. While waiting I got to look at the Panther in operation with some of the staff. It was there first time also.

We got in line at 7pm, my wife and I were first. She purchased a cinnamon raisin bagel an coffee to enjoy during the wait. She surfed the web also. We had a lot of shoppers walking up wondering what the line was about. A great opportunity to plug Apple. There were approximately 100 or so in line.
