tsmit, I was amused to see myself in a couple of your blurry photos. Did the security give you trouble? They were harassing some Apple Store guys for trying to take pictures of the line... All in all, I got there at 7-ish and didn't have to wait too long once the doors opened. Reading other people's posts, I'm glad we didn't have to wait outside like some did.

No way...you're in my pics! Thats funny. I was using my phone, so i don't think anyone even realized i was taking pictures. There's a picture up there of people inside the apple store, i was hard pressed to get that one. I thought people would swarm on me if they saw me. But, honestly, i want to know who the girl's name is in this picture:

I attended the product releasing at the Apple store in Ala Moana despite the fact having received Panther and installing earlier in the afternoon. Lines were long and I was under the impression they were going to do a presentation of somesort but evidently not. The 10% discount was in effect but you had to buy Panther to be eligible for that. In any case I walked away happy with a Griffen Powermate which I now have pulsating on my desk:). Fantastic night to see a HUGE line of Mac loyal.

Completely appropos of nothing... but are either of these Apple Stores in San Diego within a decent walking or cab distance from downtown?

I'm coming in on business next week, staying at the Manchester Grand Hyatt, and if I can get away from the conference for a few minutes, I'd like to check out an Apple Store, since they haven't quite got around to an Apple Store in Toronto yet.

The Fashion Valley store will be your best bet. It's a short cab drive from downtown (6 or so miles from the convention center). The trolley also has a stop at the mall.

Have fun!

I got a panther mouse pad and the sims with some expansion pack from Alden Media, which is a new apple retailer here in Salt Lake City.

They didn't have any 12" Powerbooks, so I had to order that from the Apple Online store. :(

Jut to inform you how it was in Germany:
Just about 50 guys and girls were gathering at our biggest Apple dealer here in Bremen (Gravis) We weren´t getting many rabates! Not even thinking of 10 % off the price of a computer...
Though I went to a near pub and installes Panther there. Workes without any problems on every Mac I own.

Stood in line for about 30 minutes at the SoHo store. The line wrapped around the block and then some. The fun was hearing all of the geeks in line answer questions from the fashionistas who were walking around the area: "What's going on?" "They're launching a new operating system!" All them fashionistas had no idea what anyone was talking about!

The wrapping paper rocks! Picked up 4 rolls of them, plus several dog chains. Definitely would have loved the $20 gift certificates some of you guys mentioned. Oh well.

6th

I ordered a Powerbook BTO on the 6th, still waiting to receive it. (At a shop).
I don't know if it will come with Panther, when it comes I hope I will get a deal for a family-pack because I got a Powermac as well. So I need to continue with Jaguar for a little while..

I was the second one in line to get Panther, I also purchased The new ibook, and I purchased an emac for my daughters. with 10% discounts, i saved around $300. I was a good day

Looking to adopt? Daddy, I need a 40 iPod!

First evidence of the next generation new processor?

This is an undoctored photo I took at the Panther Night event at The Grove in Los Angeles last night. Notice anything interesting in the bottom right corner?

The first person to correctly explain it gets 1,000 points.

(Sorry. The two members who I already told about it are not eligible.)

Friend of mine drove down from Fairfax since Tyson's is closed and it was a chance to be a bunch of geeks sitting around with Powerbooks and iBook, mine. The folks at Short-Pump are a great bunch.

The place was packed with a security guard standing by to make sure they didn't overcrowd and break fire-code. The line moved pretty swiftly though.

Stayed till almost 11:00. Got home, installed Panther. So much faster. Preview alone is worth it if you ask me. It loads PDFs faster than you can blink, seriously fast.

WOW YOU WERE THERE TOO!!! :D

Where were you? I was there all night! I really love the Apple Store Short Pump. Blair and James are the nicest people I've ever meet.

$20 .Mac Coupon

In another thread I mentioned how the $20 Apple Store coupon I got for renewing my .mac subscription wasn't working on the Apple Store for Education.

Well, I just called the 800-MYAPPLE number and it is valid. Some screwup is keeping it from working via the web store.

Soooo, Panther for $49! :-D

DUDE - What's with the two hot latin girls in patent leather at the door? Did they work for the Apple Store? I'm MOVING to Mexico City!:D

Just kidding - why not in America? damn......

Dude I'm vacationing in Mexico on the next OS release, The Menlo Park Mall Apple Employees looked like a bunch of Richard Simmons work-out video rejects wearing tight black (size XXX and still too small) Panther shirts.

Post Panther Install comments

It's much much faster (I am on a G5 1.6 ghz with 1.25 gb ram)
It reset my preset browser to Safari (from Netscape - it runs real fast on a G5 !) That seemed very microsoft of apple. They could have at least asked if I wanted to do it. Safari, however, is much faster and is able to handle some java stuff that it couldn't before. I might have switched but I don't agree with the way it was forced on me.
the new window setup with the favorites and stuff on the left side of a window instead of on the top is nice but there's a whole bunch of wasted window real estate now where 10.2 used to have the favorites. It's just empty brushed metal. Apple should have either put some functionality there or else moved the window options to the left window area as well.
The way a program zooms up and fades away when you open it is cool and the way a file/folder shows that it is highlighted is nice.
The new safari and ichat seem much more stable.
I'm not sure how I feel about the way menus look now. They are still transparent but they look a little too clean and smooth - almost sanitized. That's another thing that makes me think MS.
Finder is by far the most improved as far as speed. Menus pop up much more quickly. Even on a G5 there was a bit of a delay when clicking a menu. I suppose there still is, but it's much snappier.

Rower,
I was at the Fashion Valley store. I thought about going to the UTC one for the grand opening and the t-shirt, but it was too far from my hotel. As it was, I had to take the blue line from 5th ave to the mall at 10 pm. That was enough for me. How was it? Did you get a t-shirt?

Edit: Totalshock,
I too was in town on business. I assume you are going to be at the convention center? Plastic surgery conf? Anyway, I walked to the trolley station, and it drops you right at the mall, no problem. From the stop, walk towards the middle of the mall and there is your apple store. The entrance is accessible from the courtyard.

My friend and I took the El into Chicago to attend the event at the N. Michigan Ave. store, which is really an incredibly designed store, even compared to other Apple Stores. It's the first two-story one I've seen (but, remember, it's only the third one I've seen, the other two being in malls).

Waited for about 40 minutes to get in. When you walked in, there were two rows of Apple employees (about 50 total--I was surprised that there were so many). There were tubs filled with the dogtags, on either side.

As the first person in the line entered, the clapping commenced. They kept going until the last person had come through. They were probably clapping a total of five minutes. It was incredible. You walk about fifty feet to the huge staircase, flanked by all these Apple employees in their black Panther t-shirts in an uproar of applause...Very much the climax, and rather exhilirating.

Nicely done.

The Project Manager for Panther, I believe, was the one who conducted the presentation. He did a good job. My friend had his PB and showed up on the guy's iChat list. I tried to get him to send an message, but he wouldn't. Alas.

The video with the guy Omar was pretty good, too, until you watched it a second time, at which point he got annoying.

I wonder when we'll find out about who won the drawing...I imagine if you went to a middle-of-nowhere store, you'd be much better off, because they're giving away one computer per store, correct?

All in all, though, a fun and festive occassion that I thoroughly enjoyed.
you live in wilmette, evanston, skokie, or a surrounding suburb? well i'm glad i didn't bother going to the store just for dog tags. do u know if they are honoring the edu discounts on software there? if so i'll be in tomorrow :D
