My dad's been waiting for Panther before he buys his G5. It's his first Mac and he doesn't want to mess with installing/upgrading the OS. I'm trying to find out for sure when they'll start shipping with Panther preinstalled (if they haven't already). As soon as it's confirmed, he'll be placing his order. Right now the Online store still shows graphics of Jaguar with the G5s. I'll see if they update it tomorrow...

There's really no mess in the install. The upgrade to Jaguar was rather painless. I hope Panther is the same. But I can empathize, I at least want it sent with my G5 if not already installed (which is also why I am waiting).

They can be the most admired company in the US, but all they will get from me is nothing but a blank stare.

MS admired? Maybe for their cash reserves. :p

Yes I too cringed at the language. Can you say buzz word bingo? Read between the lines. If they weren't serious they could probably push Longhorn out next year or in early 2005. The fact that they have pushed it back 3 years should tell you something.

Please, please, please. All Massachusetts Macheads go to cambridgeside. Stay away from Chestnut Hill. There is nothing for you to see or win there. ;)

10.3 arrives in Fiji

Received my Panther today in Fiji.

NOTHING every happens here first (short of the sun rising) so quite happy to feel on the cutting edge, even if only for a day.

The single most important reason for upgrading is not Expose ot iChat AV but the amazingly fast Preview and user interface. Preview is now the absolutely fastest way to read PDF files regardless of platform! PDF files simply pop open and scroll superfast. It is amazing...:D

Esposé is crap. If you can't hit ctrl+h to close your programs, hold alt when you click the finder or need more than two finder windows open at one time it's your own problem.

Work neater, work smarter.

Exposé will be turned off the moment I install 10.3 I need those keys for my own progs.

I'm looking forward to all the new compatibility features with windows networks. Of the 150 new features, something like 30 of them are related to making nice with Windows systems. That's a big plus for me.

Its crap because you don't have a need it?

Wow.

Tonight was my night of the panther....

I like it... except for some reason my terminal seems sluggish, and my battery life doesn't immediately look like it's better (like some people said). Hmm.

Installing the update was pretty darned near painless. And bootup time is like 10x faster now. Woohoo!

The statement like this actually shows how clueless they really are - LIKE THEY'VE NEVER THOUGHT OF THESE POINTS FOR THEIR PRODUCTS UNTIL NOW - and that they have so far done nothing more than borrowing someone else's idea and repackaging it with massive marketing effort.

If there will be any truth in this hallow statement about overhauling the OS, then Longhorn will be released in... say, Year 2106.

They can be the most admired company in the US, but all they will get from me is nothing but a blank stare.

Nice, very nice. Harsh, but true. You'd think microsoft would have figured out what an operating system is by now, since, ya know, they were the first to come up with one (joke). :D

I'll be going to the Pasadena, CA store to try and snag a t-shirt. I'm actually from Ohio, but I'm in L.A. for some company training.

Now when I win that iMac, I wonder how they'll get it to me... ;)

[1] Mac OS X 10.3 Panther and Xcode Tools

The Mac OS X 10.3 set is a 4-disc package that includes Install Discs 1, 2, and 3, and Xcode Tools Version 1.0. These discs are the same as those included in retail kits.

IRC Chat

Ok, we're using our IRC channel to do a live chat for "Night of the Panther". It's open to all, and we would really like people from other Apple stores to participate, and to include "|" + the Apple store they are at in their nicks, for example, mine would be "pourhadi|Woodfield".

The channel is #techbytes and it is on server IRC.CYBER2K.NET. So, come on by!

Hmm, we bought an iBook about a month after Jaguar and it was preinstalled.
I bought a dual GHz G4 the night Jaguar was released (10% off, doncha know), and 10.2 was preinstalled, including the CD's in the box and everything. Of course, in all fairness, I seem to recall that that generation of machines got 10.2 a bit before the retail boxes were available.

No Mac fans in Cleveland?

Cleveland is FINALLY getting a mac store tomorrow. I am going early to get a t-shirt and then getting Panther later in the evening.

Anyone else from Cleveland here?

Hhmmm...thanks for that. Maybe I'll just order it online after all.
My problem is that I'm dying to get Panther up and running but as yet it isn't supported by ProTools and probably won't be for another month yet. Major dillema! Maybe work will have to go on the back burner for a while:)

Just go there later - all the losers will be in line starting at 6pm or earlier. Go around 9:30pm, even 10pm. This is what I did for the iPod party and I even got a t-shirt :)
And have an alternative plan. I am going around 9:30pm and if it is still crazy, there are plenty of things to do down in Soho. I am not even going for Panther, just for the "party"

The rules may say that there is one raffle prize per store, but that doesn't tell me what I need to know: am I eligible to win the raffle at more than one store? If so, I plan to win two iMacs. Otherwise, I guess I'll just have to settle for one. ;)

I took a look at Mac OS release dates:

Mac OS 1 - 1984
Mac OS 2 - 1985
Mac OS 3 - 1986
Mac OS 4 - 1987
Mac OS 6 - 1988
Mac OS 7 - 1991

These were all branded "System", not "Mac OS". The first Mac OS was Mac OS 7.6. It was called Mac OS to accomodate the clone systems at that time, built by vendors such as Power Computing, Motorola, Umax, and Daystar.

Mac OS 8 (Copland) - 1997

Codename was Tempo. Copland was the ill-fated project to rewrite the Mac OS around the new kernel, NuKernel. It was replaced by Rhapsody in 1997, which in 1998 became Mac OS X.

Mac OS 8.5 was released in 1998. Codenamed Allegro, Mac OS 8.5 introduced Sherlock, the main feature of which was contextual searching. (It existed in Mac OS 8, but it required an arcane hack, and was incredibly slow as well.)

Mac OS 9 (Gershwin) - 1999

Mac OS 9 was codenamed Sonata.

Mac OS X (Cheetah) - March 2001

Mac OS X version 10.0 was predated by Mac OS X Server version 1.0 (January 1999). Mac OS X Server 1.0 was pretty much what Rhapsody was intended to be, i.e. no Carbon, but still a full OS. Mac OS X Server 1.0 had a darkened Mac OS 9 interface (Aqua wasn't demonstrated until MWNY 1999). The first Aquafied version, Mac OS X Public Beta, was available for a very low cost in 2000. However, it was set to expire in May 2001. I will take this opportunity to proudly say that I bought the Mac OS X Public Beta, tried it, and quickly switched back to Mac OS 9 due to speed concerns. But it was great.

Mac OS X 10.1 ("Puma") was not a full upgrade, but rather a $20/free update.

Mac OS X (Jaguar) - late 2002

The first Mac OS X where the "cat" codename became part of the product name, prompting Apple to veto the "Pinot" codename for 10.3 in favor of "Panther". However, Apple has a long history of codenames eventually becoming official product names. The codename of the Macintosh, for instance, was actually Macintosh. The same was true of the Lisa.

Does Panther not go on sale until 8pm? Grrr... I just called and asked about the educational discount and they said not in the store so, I was thinking of swinging by the school in the morning and going to the apple section and getting it but, if it does not go on sale till 8 then my plans are flushed.

Apple leases their land from the cheesecake company?
