It WOULD be interesting if Nike's next FuelBand had many of the features of an Apple Watch, including iPhone connectivity, but in band-style. So, those who are not in favor of a watch form factor could use this form factor.

Not going to happen. Why would Apple make a partnership that would hurt sales of their own product?

After owning the first and second generation of the Nike Fuelband, I hope they add features. They didn't do much really compared to the competition.

Not surprised by this. Ben Shaffer, who worked in Nike's innovation Kitchen now works for Apple's industrial design group.

Cause the fuel band lasts a week, can be worn with another watch and does not need an iphone. Its actually a much better fitness accessory. If they can get GPS into the nike band, and a heart sensor, it would be awesome.

A week? I've been getting weeks from my Fuelband 2! I had the first one but it started to fall apart after 9 months. Apple replaced it with the 2 (or is it called the SE Edition?) back in summer. I think I've only charged it 5 or 6 times since then. I don't know how it does it. I do just wear it and forget it though and upload data once in a blue moon. Cracking stuff.

All I want from Nike now is Health kit support. And other than a guaranteed water resistance I don't know what I'd want from future models.

Truly different thinking would have looked more like the FUELBAND. IMHO.
Instead we got an old skool watch with some nano updating. Yeah, a year ago people thought I was already wearing an iwatch. I had slapped clipped the nano on a silicon watch strap. Thank you Jony Ive and Tim Cook for coasting on Steven Jobs laurels.

I had been hoping that the iwatch would take design cues from the fuel band.
I loved that one prototype that was floating about in the rumor mill. It featured the idea that you could roll images and functionality in a sultry strip. I don't remember who mocked it up, but it looked like a natural next level for the fuel band that Apple surely could have taken on, with some cool assed bendy glass type material allowing for a flexible screen.

Think different by copying Nike.

It would be interesting if the Nike band outsells the Apple Watch.

My guess is that we're going to see more sports-specific applications of these new wearables from Nike. They aren't going to bother trying to compete directly with Apple and Tim Cook.

Riiight...
Apple is going to string them along, get creative idea's then dump them because creativity at Apple is apparently stagnate.

It has been well documented that Apple has been known to work this way in the past.

"If you don't cannibalize yourself, someone else will." - Steve Jobs

For example, Apple knew the iPhone would eat into iPod sales and the iPod would eat into iPhone sales. But if Apple didn't produce an iPhone without cell connectivity, someone else would create that category and Apple would lose.

This would seem to be the same thing. Develop a partnership with Nike, which they have already done, and have the category where the iPhone can interface with a fitness band of another form factor work in Apple's favor. Then Apple doesn't have to have to develop this product as well - and they still sell iPhones to be paired with the device. It's a win-win.

Sadly you are. The watch needs to track the GPS data while you run :)

Only if you care about GPS data. The FitBit, Nike Fuel Band, Jawbone, none of the popular bands include GPS.

If you need GPS data, carry your iPhone with you (there are arm straps you can use instead of your pocket, I see many people running around like this). If you don't need GPS data, keep the iPhone at home. Which is what everyone with Jawbones, fitbits and nike fuel bands do now.

Good call by Apple reinvigorating this partnership, after "The Great Sapphire Collapse of 2014" they desperately needed some positive "wearable" news.

The Nike CEO has been on the Apple Board for many years. Hardly anything that needed to be "reinvigorated." From the interview it's Nike trying to attach its sails to Apple's boat.

Also your description GT Advance's financial condition and its effect on Apple is amusing. You must have been a headline writer at the National Enquirer. AAPL is at all time highs (up $1.90 today). Some desperation. :D

Yep, people that run for 2 weeks in spring every 2 years buy one of those gadgets to post about it on facebook

“Though Nike recently discontinued further development on its FuelBand fitness wearables, the sports and fitness company is not ready to abandon the wearables market, instead waiting for the market to mature beyond it current geeky status.”

In other words, sales were a dog after the initial bump of gift buying for friends and spouses and, as smart business persons, they’re getting out of the business.

Apple's stock hit another all-time record high today. Do you think it was because of the Nike announcement? Or do investors think settling the Sapphire Collapse clears another hurdle?

They reported phenomenal sales of the iPhone 6, and record sales of computers also. Apple doesn't seem that desperate to me.

Nike should team with Amazon. The ad copy writes itself:

Add Fuel™ to the Fire™.

This doesn't surprise me at all. I don't want to sound too harsh, but looking at the comments on threads about the Apple Watch make it apparent that some people spend a lot of time on their couch. The Apple Watch - something I will be purchasing - is not the end all be all for this segment. I don't want to pay $350+ and use the Apple Watch to sweat and workout. Additionally, the Apple Watch is not ideal for weightlifting or activities that require the user have nothing on their wrist - or possibly something with a low profile on their wrist.

For all of those reasons and more, the Apple Watch is something that can be used for a lot of the time, but not all of the time. What can people who exercise use most of the time - Fitbit should get their act together!

I didn't like Nike's product - I am a HUGE Nike fan - because I just want normal distances and accuracy. You can keep the Nike fuel.

Cannibalizing your own sales with another one of your products is one thing, helping another company to do it is something totally different and not something they've done in the past.

Meh. Most runners carry their phones with them while they're out. Most tracking themselves with GPS while they're out running or biking are doing it with their phones, not wristband options like Garmins that cost more than an Apple Watch. I don't see this being a big issue for most to have to carry their phone with if they want the addition of GPS data.

No one is running the whole day. You use the GPS when you run :)

Some of us do. I bought the Garmin 310XT because it's got a battery life of 24 hours. Mind you, I'm not sure I'd bother with the HRM for that length of run, I don't know how much battery that would save.

The Garmin Forerunner 620/220 which is their top tier GPS running watch sells for $400/$250, respectively. If you don't need the color display or detailed coaching features you can pick up the Forerunner 15 (GPS & activity tracker) or the Forerunner 10 for $170/$130, respectively.

Well, in 1994-1997, Apple did license out their Mac OS for Macintosh Clones. There actually was a time where Apple-approved Mac clones existed. I know it was a different time, pre-Steve Jobs, but now it's post-Steve Jobs, so anything can happen.
