Can someone please explain to me why the average person would need to track this much data about their daily life? I understand exercise apps...but tracking how much I walk, sit, or stand...and then offering me incentive to do it again?

The M7 co-processor is awesome. But this (much like the "fit" bracelets that are coming out) seems to be just another thing that someone can obsess over, then post to Facebook.

Maybe I'm missing something. But this quote comes to mind when I see borderline excessive data tracking apps like this....

"We are drowning in information, but starved for knowledge."
--John Naisbitt

It's just a motivator for people in largely stoic lives/jobs to be conscious of moving around more. If you check your Move at lunch and realize that your activity is low, you'll know you should get up and move around more. Moving is healthy, so it is just something to help people move more. Just because you don't get it doesn't mean it doesn't help people.

Couple of questions:

1. How does the app already know my activity over the past few days? I've only just downloaded the app and it has all the data from when I bought the phone. I guess the M7 is tracking data all of the time then regardless of whether you want it to or not?

2. Does the app need to be running or do I need background apps turned on for this to work/work better? I assume not considering the info from the first question. It's kind of cool but creepy at the same time, no?

EDIT: Stupid me. This article answers both questions: http://www.knowyourmobile.com/apple...o-processor-explored-everything-you-need-know

I saw this to! I deleted the app because I was like well how do you have information from a week ago I never even had this app or an account! I've had my phone since release and there was about a week-2 weeks of stats.

Thanks you that article I'll reinstall the app. Kinda creepy how it's been tracking you all along. But whatever doesn't bother me I was just surprised.

cycling

wondering if this app (or the m7 processor) can/will detail other sports action like cycling, snowboarding etc.

So basically this app uses no battery at all. It can be completely closed and everything since the M7 is already tracking you this app basically just reads the data the iPhone is already collecting. Pretty cool.

Unless you keep it open to let it track your location then it will use some battery

Oh, hi new user! That username is already in use. Let me help by resetting all the fields on the form for you! We know how much you love entering your birthday using the UIPickerView for each field, so we're going to let you do it again!

Be sure to re-enter that password we already verified!

Oh, I helpfully set "receive newsletters" back to Yes while you weren't looking, tee hee!

Ha yep I installed a pedometer a week after 5S and had the phone replaced the week after that and restored from the original backup. It only showed new steps on the 5S so I'm guessing the phone stores that data and then supplies it to whatever app asks for it, guessing that's why it asks for permission before iOS hands it over to the app!

Good for you. No, really: congratulations, it's great that you're in good physical condition. It's pretty important, and a lot of people have trouble doing it. Perhaps that fact has escaped your attention?
.

Can I just say that your entire post was amazing. Seriously, you ****ing rock dude. I wish there were more people like you.

lack of options in the app are seriously annoying, did they just push this through right before they release the new Nike band SE?

Are any of these apps that take advantage of M7 integrating with MyFitnessPal, so your steps/calories can be added automatically to it?

I know Loseit just released an update that does add step tracking to their system using M7, but it's only for $40/yr premium members.

I agree it's very basic right now. I'd like to be able to look at previous days and not just a week overview. I'm sure it will get better.

Has anyone tested if they get nike fuel driving there car?
I know the one guy did with a motorcycle but that makes more sense

if you hit a bump or something it will record like 1 step, it definitely added about 150 points on my 30minute commute by car, but its not like it counted 28 miles lol.

it works based on the acceleratorometer.

I think he feels the overload of information doesn't help. That you're missing the forest for the trees. I.e., gathering metrics on your sleep cycles, steps in a day, heart rates, etc. isn't excessively helpful if they aren't in a easy to digest package.

That doesn't answer anything. All it says is that some people can't handle a lot of info.

And, like I said, those people don't need to use this. In fact, you have to go out of your way to use it. Unless he's saying (or, you're saying he's saying) that no one can make good use of this info, which I'd consider an absurdly silly claim.

The average individual would do better to simply MOVE, vs focusing on hitting certain metrics in multiple categories each day.
And since they don't move, why not provide tools to help them do so? Even if it's just hitting metrics? Which, for some strange reason, is something that you seem to think is inferior to what they are doing now.

I think what you are missing is that you are a narcissist. "I'm wonderful, I don't need this, therefore there is no point to it. I am the model for humanity." Don't worry; you are not alone. It's a very common malady in the 21st Century, and you can have a full and productive life in spite of it. It doesn't make you a particularly bad person, just a banal one, on occassion.

You need to chill. This is a FORUM and I literally asked a question, I presumed nothing. In fact I use diet and exercise apps on a daily basis, just not ones that track movement. I wanted to know why these apps are appealing.

Slow down and breathe. I didn't judge anyone, simply wanted to see the need for an app like this...I didn't jump to conclusions and call anyone a "narcissist" like you did. What the heck is your problem?

I think it's pretty clear what happened, you must have been sleep walking!

I took another nap today, and while the bar is flat for that time, it is still in the 20% area. So it must not be based on activity alone. It must be like a point system that just goes down when there is no activity.

I agree there are far too many judgemental attitudes and personal commenting on the forums, and far too much use of sarcasm, which is saying the exact opposite of what you mean, and should be avoided in general, but ESPECIALLY on an internet forum.

No one knows other people on here by screen name, so it's pretty silly to address replies to a specific person, out of all the billions of people out there on the internet, and the thousands or tens of thousands who read this forum. Simply state an issue or question objectively, and ignore the fact that it was written by an individual person, because you will never meet or know them. Replies should be for the whole of the community, otherwise use private messaging.

I love my Nike Fuelband and it's sister app for iOS devices.

On September 19th I went to the doctor for my yearly physical and I found out I have high blood pressure. The doc wanted me to go on meds but I asked him if there was a way for me to manage my blood pressure naturally. He said, "Sure, start by losing 60 pounds.".

At that moment I decide to lose the weight and started looking for a tool that I could use to track my progress. I needed something to boost my moral because I had become a fat, lazy slob that would be tempted to quit. After doing some research I found the Nike Fuelband and decided that this fancy gadget was the motivator I was going to invest in. I wasn't too upset about the $150 price tag because a gym membership and fitness trainer would cost a lot more than that. In fact, the cost of a gym membership and trainer makes the $150 Fuelband feel like pennies.

Fast forward to November 5th and I have lost 20 pounds and lowered my blood pressure by a few points. Sure, the Nike Fuelband is a glorified pedometer but it keeps me informed and more importantly, it keeps me motivated to reach my next goal. I like the awards and milestones it hands out and I appreciate the general comparison it gives me against men in my age category.

All in all, I have to say that this $150 piece of tech has helped me start and sustain a better lifestyle. Could I have done it without the Nike Fuelband? Sure, but it wouldn't have been as much fun. If you're interested in it I say buy it and start moving.

Good luck!

I've had it open since I took it off the charge this morning and still have 63% battery left. The location arrow has been on my screen since then, so even though its getting my location, it still hasn't used any battery. As soon as I started up the app, it already had data from the last week since as you said, the M7 is always tracking.

This app records ALL movements, not just walking. So for the person who it registered movement while he was napping, you might have been moving in your sleep and it recorded it as movement.
