Hello
Would love to hear your views on this watch. Especially if you primarily bought it to enjoy using whilst running and listening to music.

I didn't "buy it to run", but I use it 4-5 times per week for running on a treadmill while listening to my exercise playlist on a pair of Bose SoundSport Free. I normally use the nike run club app on my watch, later syncing to the phone app.

It is awesome. The first times you use it it tends to overestimate the speed/distance for about 10%-15% (compared to the treadmill), but later it comes around.

I particularly enjoy the fast charging, 'cause with 10 minutes it gains enough charge to run for about 1 hour more.

Yup, I’ve been running with an apple watch for the last several years. Had the nike S3 and now a regular aluminum S5. I’d recommend either a nike sport band or a sport loop, as the regular sport bands don’t breathe very well for running. I used to run with Jaybird X2s or gen 1 AirPods, now I use AirPod pros. All three headsets work very well with the AW and keep a stable connection the entire run. FWIW I don’t like the Nike+ app very much and use iSmoothRun. The running function in the stock Fitness app (formerly called Activity) is fine too.

The S6 got great preliminary reviews on the DC Rainmaker page. I had the S3, S4, and S6 and the S6 has been great so far and seems more accurate. I used to have the LTE but changed to GPS only and the battery life is great.

Interesting you changed from LTE to GPS. That is the debate for me too. I think paying £5 per month with o2 for cellular might be the better option? I know I could make do with GPS but in the back of mind I would know the watch wouldn't be using all of its features to the best of its availability. Also it is refreshing to know you can leave your iphone at home, whilst taking your watch with you. I would certainly be doing this on my 3-4 runs a week at the minimum. This would be my first Apple watch too! Still currently using my 4th gen ishuffle!

Thank you, great to hear this. I thought about getting an AW as currently using my ishuffle 4th gen (I know right) as got tired of running with my iphone in my sweaty palm! I tend to run 3-5 times a week for about 45-60mins. I know the AW is a great product and I would really be using it for my runs, listening to my running playlist (love my music) and looking at the stats etc. Yes the faster charging and slightly brighter screen must be nice improvements over the s5. Do you find the battery ok? I guess charging it every night is not the end of the world when I go to bed. It is what I have been doing for years and years with my iphone anyway.

Agreed on the sports band. I think I am going to go with the Nike s6 and the sports band with the small circular holes in for allowing my skin to breathe. I tend to sweat a lot whilst running so this design feature is key for me! I am looking at selling my second gen Airpods and upgrading to the APP as they are sweat resistant, whilst the former are not. Also I hope the noise cancelling feature will be awesome. I run outdoors in London and the traffic and various road noise is constant!

I am with you on the Nike app as used it once or twice whilst using my iphone on my runs. I did not like the voice of the person nor the fact the distance was in km and I could not seem to change the setting to miles! I will have to look at ismoothrun.

I had the S3 LTE, S5 GPS, and now the S6 LTE. All are Nike versions. I switched to the sport loop band and find it much more comfortable for running and wearing all day. Not having to carry my phone while running is worth it for me. I forgot how much I like having the option to not carry my phone.

I’m with you on not having to carry your phone with you everywhere. And having the s5 GPS model, what can you not to given it’s not cellular and how do you find this given you’ve had both cellular and gps models.

I got tired of paying for LTE that I almost never used. With taxes and fees it was almost an extra $20 per month. I’ve never run with my phone so it’s not a big deal for me to go back to that. I started running in 1994 when running with a phone wasn’t even an option so the bulk of my running career has been phone-less anyway.

Miscellaneous thoughts...

Apple Watch for running isn't as data focused as Garmins and Polars, though third party software largely fills the gap.
- not likely a concern for you if you're just using an ipod shuffle right now.

I started with a GPS only Series3 - switched to LTE as of Series3 - wouldn't go back. Really nice to be able to not carry my phone when out for a run, walking the dog, doing yardwork outside wifi range, etc - yet I can still see/respond to texts, I can see if an incoming call is one I need to answer, I can use Siri to add reminders/items-to-grocery-list as I think of them. Also super handy to be able to stream music / podcasts on a run without having to download them beforehand. It's been handy to let me wife know I'd decided to run a longer long run than planned, so she didn't worry. Same for peace of mind that I can easily call for help if it were needed. Note - DoNotDisturb works fine to not be interrupted when you don't want to be.

Having used both, for sweaty runs I prefer the Sport Loop over even the Nike+ sport band. Rinses clean easily and dries quickly.

Plan on charging the watch every night. I keep a puck in the bedroom - I set the watch on it at bedtime and pick it up in the morning. I suppose this might be more complicated for the folks who often find themselves sleeping in various different beds, but that only happens for me when I travel - and I keep a 0.3m version of the puck in my travel charging stuff kit.

I've had bad luck in killing sweat resistant headphones with sweat, so I've generally stuck with inexpensive bluetooth neckband headphones from Mpow and others -- I dislike in-ear tips like the AirpodsPro. Current favorite running headphones are Aftershokz Aeropex bone-conduction. There's enough idiots out there that I don't want to block my hearing.

Ouch! That's expensive.

I'm paying $10/mo on T-Mobile, includes taxes/fees. Would prefer $5/mo tho.

Verizon has 50% off their connected plan (the $50 per month highest plan), so I’m getting $5/month and then getting things like Apple Music, Disney Bundle (Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+) included.. maybe you can switch to Verizon.

For me it is about the random times when I do not want to or forget to bring my phone. Otherwise everything is the same but I just record my distance running and listen to music.

I have a Verizon family plan with 5 phones and the watch. I have had the plan for over 10 years. I am paying $10 a month for the watch LTE as I do not want to upgrade my plan further.

that's exactly me. 5 lines with my watch, I only upgraded my line to the $50, which applies to everyone at home it seems like. I also have the First Responder discount ($20 off), so the "next bill estimate" shows $194.28. That's pretty good. It actually went down, and I got the 50% off watch plan, and the Apple Music/Disney bundle for free.

i was trying different add ons this month so it went up. That’s my fault. I was on the 1080p add on for two lines and it made the LTE even slower actually, so I switched back.

I still owe $15 on my phone, so the actually bill will drop to $179 later on.

Well, for the OP, It's good to get cellular if you can afford it (or if you can get a discounted plan for it, $10, but prefer $5 like me). It helps when you go outside and don't have to bring your phone all the time. The cellular is also good when you don't exercise too (For example, when you go shopping outside and don't need to bring your phone). The Apple Pay on the watch can pay for things at the supermarket.

I also get the crust responder discount but have 1 phone being paid off but my bill is higher. I have to check what plan I am on and maybe I can call and find out if I can save a few dollars.

Try it, just ask them if they can save you anything. I just paid my phone right now (only $150 left), so this is the new estimate. So for 5 lines (paying for my older parents too) and a watch, $178 is a super deal.

I used my second gen AirPods on every run since I got them, and I sweat a bunch. I got a second pair as a bonus, so my son now uses my first pair. My only complaint was the battery life which had degraded.

Yeah, the setting is hard to find. You have to go into your account page by tapping your account icon in the top left corner. Once there, go into settings, and you'll see an option to change the unit of measure.

Just got my brand new AW6 44mm GPS Nike edition and I love it.

This is my 3rd AW (I have got AW2 and 4 before) but the first one Nike edition.

I do high energy walkings up to 5 times a week, sometimes for 90 minutes+ and wearing Beats Studio 3 (heavy but so immersive that I don’t mind).

One of the nicest plus I have found with AW6 while the Nike app is running is that the alway on display shows the time in a pretty big font, easy to read under all light conditions.

The natural integration with the Nike run club app is out of discussion, of course.

The sport loop is great and really really comfortable.

When I go to office I change it with a premium leather band, paired with a classy watch face similar to the Hermes one and the watch magically looks completely different.

Overall, I’m very happy with this version.
I will probably buy only Nike version in future.

Yes, it is better than the S5, but then again, maybe is because it is a new watch. I find myself charging less frequently and for less time with the S6 (still more than 5 times per week, mind you)

Ahh thanks, think I have now found it 👍🏻

Really pleased to hear. Given I would be buying the watch mainly for running and listening to music the Nike edition makes sense. I think I might go for the cellular option. It is only £5 a month with network provider 02. Also it’s comfort to know you get all your alerts etc when you are out without your iphone. To be able to leave your phone at home and head out with the watch I do like. Can I ask why you didn’t go for the cellular option?

Re earphones, I am thinking of going for the AirPods Pro. I run in London and there is so much traffic noise hence the noise cancellation feature looks useful as well as the airpods being sweat resistant.

I don’t really know why I didn’t pick up the LTE: probably I was hesitant to buy something that may drain more battery and that isn’t really needed in my normal use.
