The Verge used to be a great website. Now it's slowly turning into Gizmodo. Gizmodo used to be great too. Sad to see.

Other than trashing someone you don't even know....

Do you have a point?

Is this supposed to contribute to anyone's knowledge of an Apple product?

Just asking :)

I know him enough to know he's racist thanks to his own big mouth

You've picked a rather extreme example, but we all know you can customize notifications to be different from the iPhone, as opposed to merely mirroring the iPhone. So that's a false premise.

I don't think my example is so extreme. It's entirely possible that for some apps, you'll want more notifications on your phone than on your watch. That's currently not possible, either an app's notifications is on for the watch (and matches the notifications you've set for your iphone), or they're off for the watch. I don't think that's a false premise on my part at all. I think Nilay failed to point out that you can customize the notifications you get on a per app basis on the phone, which the watch will then mirror, but the basic premise that you cannot adjust separate notification levels for the watch and the phone is correct.

That premise is not entirely correct.

One good example would be the default mail app.

You're right, that is a significant exception. But that's a first party app. You don't have that fine grain control of third party apps, at least not to my knowledge.

Again, I'm not defending Nilay's review. I think he was predisposed not to like it and found every reason not to like it, and the ways in which he illustrated this through his contrived scenarios where he was also pushing other sites to were very tacky. But that particular point about notifications isn't entirely off.

I'm not understanding what you're trying to say, because that's not true. You can, for example, get notifications for all accounts in Mail on the iPhone, but only selected email accounts on the Watch. You can indeed adjust separate notification levels for both devices, at least with the native apps.

I just addressed this in the post above.

I was chatting with a girl last night over dinner and the watch kept flashing
I had to say "ignore that" for her to continue what she was saying
That right there is my biggest reason for being 50/50 on the watch right now

I noticed that after my post. At least it's a false premise as a blanket statement, but third party apps still have a long way to go and Apple will likely give them more latitude in future updates. The original iPhone was even more crippled.

I agree, I think AW 1.0 (and 1.0.1) is far beyond the iPhone 1.0.x.

There's the Do Not Disturb option on the Watch. A no brainer thing to do whenever you're at the dinner table.

So now there's one extra thing to remember to switch on and off
How is this thing making my life simpler/better

I won't return the watch, I won it at a competition, but i can't help but feel that a lot of people only like this product because it's 'apple'...and yet it feels like the most un-apple product I've used from them in recent years...if not ever

Had this exact same watch been made by Microsoft or Samsung, this forum would laugh at it for being ridiculous

So you allow your iPhone to ring at the dinner table too? Activating Do Not Disturb on iPhone is also mirrored on the Watch.

I don't know why some of you think The Verge was always so pro-Apple in the past. I have always perceived them as one of the worst click-baiters. They love using negative Apple headlines and do it at every opportunity. In fact, this is the main reason I stopped following them on Twitter and stopped reading their reviews. Wasn't it The Verge who said that the Apple Watch was the best smartwatch ever made and then proceeded to score it lower than the Moto 360 at the end of the review?

They've become a disgrace, and I regard them as being just as slimy as Gizmodo and Engadget these days. If you want fair and balanced reviews, go to Ars Technica. At least until they sell out and start doing the same things all the others do.

I couldn't disagree any more strongly. If anything it feels as Apple as it gets. Mine works great exactly for what it was made for and on top of it, it's beautiful. It took weeks to realize these truths

After 20 days with mine, I agree. I can't imagine not wearing this thing every day. It's also inspired me to get back on a health kick and lose some weight.

I think it's safe to come to the conclusion that they are a lot of people on here who don't own an apple product let alone an apple watch, it's the sad side of the Internet that people have to spend time online making up comments to suit an agenda, apple like any company isn't untouchable so genuine criticism is needed but making stuff up to argue with someone you don't actually know? Weird?!...

That's trolling when people do that but JUST AS BAD, is all these people arguing that the watch sucks when they DONT OWN AN APPLE WATCH, and this is not few and far between , it's a lot of people, when Mac rumors posts on the front page they all come out of the woodwork how bad the watch is and how ape dropped the ball on this one and all the reasons it's bad and they have never owned one haha. It's almost comical like when iPad came out

The haters always be hating! :D

I own one ... still needs some refinement (software wise, hardware is great) but still the best smart watch hands down and definitely a 9/10 or A+ category. Considering Apple will continue to improve it I believe they've set the bar high even with this first generation.

To the Trolls; if you don't own one then your opinion is about as valid as an out of date warranty : not worth the paper it is printed on. I can't comment on the value or quality of a Ferrari as I have never owned one; more importantly I won't comment as my view could never be based on my own experience. It's like a person whom has never smoked telling a smoker that there is nothing nice or comforting about a cigarette; you just don't know ... so leave the discussion to people that do!

Side note to the guy with the girl at dinner:

1. My god, is switching on Do Not Disturb such an hard task? Does your brain break down when handling more than one thing to remember?

2. If the girl couldn't concentrate because she saw your watch face come on while she was talking then I'd argue she doesn't have enough content between her ears ... perhaps it is the type of girls you are attempting to have dinner with that is the issue!!

Rant over!

Oh ... yeah ... Nilay .... guy is a joke.

Obviously they have been all for Apple but someting changed clearly. Mabey the watch wasn't free this time. :) :) Nilay is pretty shallow so who knows what hurt his pride

Have you considered the possibility that the factor that changed may be on the side of the reader?

I don't mean that to be as offensive as it sounds, but your frustration with the review seems pretty in line with every other person who reads a review they don't agree with. "That guy doesn't love the product because he's biased!"

Whether you accept it or not, there's a reason why so many early reviews gave this a middling score. Its a product that requires user justification for all its flaws and shortcomings. After reading so many reviews and watching every tutorial I thought I was prepared for a watch but even with lowered expectations then it didn't fall naturally into my workflow and even still requires a lot of mental overrides to explain why something like this belongs in my life. That is far from being a universal product so it may not be "hating" that makes someone have an opinion, it may actually be reality.

I've considered all factors before saying what I said.

I stand by my comments. I will further add again, he is there to give an objective review of a product for what it's made to do, not give me his philosophy on why or why not smart watches are needed. I'm not dumb, your not dumb we can make that choice based on experience on our own.
If he wasn't king douche I would be less harsh on him but I would still have a valid point either way

Her watch kept 'flashing'?

There's nothing to remember. It's simpler than dealing with a phone. If I'm in a conversation or at a dinner table and I hear a notification on my watch, I casually put my hand over it to silence it. Keeping my hand there for 3 seconds will put it to silent mode or possibly even DND. And it can be done without interrupting a conversation.

Actually if I had to say anything, I find notifications less distracting now. I keep my iPhone on silent all the time and just glance at notifications on my wrist when I'm able to.
