i see this selling well ( at least from my circle of people that i know ) alot of my friends families have kids that are in elementary or middle school, and they don't want to buy their kids the 3ds because their doctors advised against it (because they wear glasses) but with the addition of this, i see at LEAST 10 kids from my small circle of people that i know that will be getting this for christmas because they were not allowed to have a 3ds due to the 3D aspect.

for me... it's an ugly design and i would have no use for it. the buttons look in an awkward position....

Exactly. My kid can't see in 3d and isn't allowed to use the 3ds with the 3d on. He uses an old ds with a broken hinge and if that breaks, I'd just get him this. Its nice to have two and might as well get him the one that I don't have to worry about him sneaking in a peak of 3d or breaking another hinge....

As someone who is too old to take his 3DS outside out of fear of being shamed a bigger geek than I already am - the 2DS isn't something I find too objectionable.

My greatest criticism is the fact they choose to go for the smaller size rather than the 3DSXL / DSXL sized screen - especially considering the 2DS uses just one screen underneath.

I too do not use the 3D turned 'ON' on my 3DS when using it. I always have it switched off as I can never find a sweet spot that lasts more than a few seconds before my hands controlling the device move it out of the sweet spot and into headache inducing territory.

The only other criticism is more towards Nintendo and the fact that even if they did introduce a new bigger 2DSXL and i picked one up - the fact that my downloads and accounts is locked to the hardware and not my user ID is a bif PITA !!!

I am actually planning on selling my 3DS and buying a 2DS (Hopefully they will have a Zelda pack in version during Christmas). I rarely use the 3D and this looks like it will fit my hands nicer. I get some bad cramps playing Mario Kart on the standard 3DS....

The DS Lite, 3DS, 3DS XL all made my hand cramp up in Mario Kart (but only that game). I picked up a "controller case" thingy for mine. I'd recommend an XL, for the screen, and one of those if you're looking at getting rid of your current 3DS.

Are you talking about getting a DS XL or 3DS XL?

You can't play 3DS games on a DS...

There are too many permutations of the DS handhelds, what with the XLs and the Lites. This is a bit too much

Really? This happens with all devices. 3 DS consoles, 3 3DS consoles, 3 Gameboy consoles, 3 Advance consoles. 4 Playstation Portables, 2 Vitas. 3 Xbox 360's, 3 Playstation 3's. And they all play the games designed for them, unlike (for example) Apple's iOS devices that update once a year and have no clear boundaries on software compatibility.

Agreed there are no more DS models than there are iPhones in a similar timeline. With the DS and 3DS you are at least able to utilize every game within that generation versus Apple where every year things get changed up.

Do forget the few 3DO's... ;)

Well I wasn't talking about smartphones nor do I look at iPhones solely as a gaming device, but I get your point.

Not...really. With the 3DS, It's pretty much a "Basic, Standard, Advanced" scenario.

2DS: $129. Inexpensive. No 3D display. No clamshell feature.
3DS: $169. 3D Display. "Standard" sized screens. Clamshell.
3DSXL: $199 3D Display. Larger Screens. Clamshell.

That's really the only differences outside of minor stuff like stylus size & placement and included storage capacity. (SD Cards are so dirt cheap these days it doesn't really matter.)

Software compatibility between them is the same, so you won't miss out on any games by picking one over the other.

The move from the DS, to the DS Lite and DSi/XL is a bit more complicated, but even then not by much.

I think I may pick one up this week, I really have no need for 3D (it gives me a headache) and the price point is perfect imo.

I've wanted to play a few 3DS games like Tales of the Abyss and this is a great way to get in at a lower price point.

I may even pick up the pokemon game for nostalgia reasons lol

2DS Mini Review

The 2DS feels more comfortable for adult hands than the 3DS imo, I've really enjoyed it and I'm glad I took the dive and bought one. It was a pain to find one in stock around here, most stores were sold out. I found a few red ones but I wanted blue which for whatever reason was more difficult to find.

So far its a great purchase, I like the fact that it has no 3D and I can play the 3DS games I wanted to play without getting a splitting headache. The lower price point makes it all the better imo. I had Gamestop credit so the 2DS, Nintendo 2DS case, Tales of the Abyss, and Pokemon X ran me $78 out the door.

I was tempted to get the XL for the larger screen but in all honesty I don't think this will see enough game time to warrant spending an additional $80. Plus quite honestly the 2DS form factor is much more comfortable to me to play games.

Thanks. Around here, there's a lot of them - no demo's and most don't even know it's out or what it is. They're buried in the case with the 3DS units.

How's the fact you can't fold it?

I don't miss that I can't fold it, I can't fold my Vita either but that didn't stop me from buying it :p

I don't stick my vita in my pocket nor did I stick my DSi in my pocket it always went in to a bag or something since I'm overly cautious with my stuff.

I'm sure it varies by region but around here I had a fun time finding a blue one. Being a big Tales fan I can't wait to play Abyss. Part of me would have liked to have the bigger screen on the XL but considering how little I play my DSi or Vita now I didn't want to throw more money at a gaming device that will likely end up sitting after a while.

Yeah, I saw a video review on The Guardian, and the reviewer made the point that it was much easier for an adult to hold.

I didn't think much of it until then...now I want one, but thinking I should wait for the 2DS XL ... I really like the 3DS XL screen.

This is another great review http://techcrunch.com/2013/10/14/nintendo-2ds-review/

I love the system, considering the price break and that its more comfortable to use it was well worth it to me.

I love my 3DS XL, mainly for the screen size. However, my wrists still ache when playing it, I usually knock the volume up or down, *and* I can never keep the screen properly located for the 3D effect for more than 10 seconds at a time...

...but other than that, I really do love it.

Hmmm...you know, by b-day is coming up soon...:D

I played Tales of the Abyss for a few hours last night and no wrist or hand aches! I thought the one speaker thing would bug me but really two speakers so close together are similar to 1 speaker since there is so little between them. Audio quality isn't bad, and im rather picky when it comes to audio.

Overall this is a great product, I'm glad Nintendo decided to make a product that doesn't force me to pay for a feature I will never use. Its a great bonus that it is much more comfortable to use for long gaming sessions!

Still only in boxes around here - would like to try one out. Maybe N will update their kiosks to show them off.

I like the 3D, will have to plot myself down at one for awhile and see how that is, most have that Mario Luigi game as the demo.

I heard it's a constant battle to hold it perfectly to get the 3D effect and you can't move your head or the position of the unit or you loose the 3D.

Different people experience it differently depending mainly on how good or bad your eyes are. I can play for hours on end with 3D turned to the max without any problems whatsoever. The XL I believe is better at that. The original had a smaller sweet spot.
