I am normally a pretty compassionate person, but I almost feel like organizing a campaign to continually spam this guy's social media accounts.

How many people are working their butts off trying to enjoy some level of success financially and this guy pisses it away because it interrupts his quiet life.

And the reality is that he fumbled into success. It was not his programming genius that caused this game to succeed. It was its difficulty on top of simplistic graphics and game play coupled with some social media viral bizarreness.

He's as bad as the movie stars that complain about paparazzi.

I know my insensitivity will anger some, but I did say that I "almost' feel like doing something.

You know that is a joke right?

Wow someone values quietness above money and you want to harass him? What type of person does that?

----------

This guy gamed his rankings with a botnet service and it got out of control. That's why he took it down. He wants the attention off him but it's too late. He's a scammer.

Who did he scam? He gets ad revenue. He isn't there sitting and clicking his own ads. No one was scammed, look up what the word means.

----------

Same. How is this newsworthy?

Man forgoes $50K a day for peace and queit while other developers be jelly.

More like Flappy Mouth with this guy... I thought the best way to avoid the spotlight is to get out of it... not keep on talking and stepping back into it.

Nintendo not responsible, but they should be. I see no reason for such green tubes in the game.

Not sure Nintendo should/could sue, but you're right that the green pipes were obviously an attempt to make the game more attractive because of the very recognizable Super Mario graphics. Anyone saying "it's inspired, not ripped off" is in denial of this obvious fact.

I'm convinced that part of the success of this game is due to that (aren't people clamoring for Super Mario on iOS?), and that the same game with original graphics may not have become so viral.

More than a legal issue, I think it's a moral/ethical issue. I've done quite a few fan games/editors for Nintendo franchises, but I always avoided making money out of it (either directly or through ads).

Part of it was fear of being sued, but another part was simply some respect for Nintendo's work, and I knew a lot of the popularity of my stuff came from the fact that it was directly related to Nintendo games and wouldn't have been popular without it.

That being said this guy certainly didn't deserve all the hate, and he probably didn't think it was a big deal to use Nintendo graphics because he usually didn't make a lot of money from his game anyway.

Maybe with the unexpected success he did realize that it was "unethical" to ride Nintendo's coat tail and it was part of his decision to pull the game off the store.

This guy was making $50k/day. And all you people who say Nintendo publishing iOS games would kill them off... Can you imagine how much Mario would bring in per day? Nintendo could spin off the iOS/Android division as a separate entity, and Nintendo could still play the console wars.

Mario easily could make a million per day, and that's probably selling the little guy short.

Can you imagine Mario Kart iOS, where you can multiplay either locally or online? OMG. I don't game on iOS, but I would start. Nintendo could easily get a few hundred from me over a span, and I'm sure many of you guys on here would be throwing money into that pot as well.

The only thing, will Nintendo make the switch when it's too late?????

As far as I know hes only released like 4 tweets and its been a couple of days since his last. He has hardly done anything to stir up the attention. He simply announced he was taking a game down, gave people a day to download it, and then did as he said.

You know that is a joke right?

What? Why would you be mad that the guy wants a quiet life, even it means he'll have to give up his financial success?

And really, guys, do you seriously think Nintendo will sue him over the pipes? LOL

I think you have some issues. Who cares what somebody else does with their money? Lots of people get a little lucky on their way to success. Lots of people make millions of dollars a year. Lots of people stop working when they are making millions. Money is just a resource. Not to mention, there are downsides to money. Have you seen how a lot of rich famous people end up so ****ed up? You think that is a coincidence? We don't have any idea about his personal life or what is going on with him. We shouldnt need to know. Its his choice what to do with his app.

My head scratcher is this...why does he say he didn't want this for the game? Why would someone release a game if they DIDN'T want it to do well. I could see maybe if he released the apps as some sort of tech demo and we were misusing it as a game or something, but really? Why did he release a game and then complain when it became popular?

Given that people who have already downloaded the app can continue to play, am I right in presuming that his advertising revenue will continue at ~50k (presuming they all keep playing). It's just that the revenues won't increase because there will be no new downloads/players. But then new players would have been on the decrease anyway given that the app was sliding down the app store.

This whole thing sounds like a marketing ploy. Take down the simplistic game after downloads have peaked, but before people get bored of it. No expectation to develop it further. Release a new simplistic game in a month's time and cash in on the hype.

This is the most famous dumbest game I've ever seen since the invention of gaming. Is this a sign that we are doomed?

I honestly hated the game. Yes it was difficult but I don't find games like that intriguing.

So I can't understand the success behind it. I guess it's not my cup of tea.

I don't think so :).
The guy's clearly an introvert and just wants to make games without fame. Not everyone is after lots of money and fame. He probably made enough to live a comfortable life for a few years and to have the financial freedom to make whatever he wanted, it's what I'd do.

Dong

See??? It never gets old... Best part of these articles is his name!!!

and I'm 34...

Exactly. A lot of the most creative people I know just want to make enough to continue their trade with freedom to experiment.

Dong is probably just frustrated, cause he isn't able to score higher than 5. And if he can't. Nobody can. Simple as that.

I had never even heard of him or this game until macrumors posted this story, and thought it might be fun to try for a short while, so I downloaded it and scored a 10 so far. Not sure if ii will play it anymore, but it is fun for at least a short time. The free version keeps popping up a bunch of ad spam for "sugar mamas" and other odd shady things, but those are only on the top of the screen away from the game buttons, and it is easy to avoid tapping them.

I imagine someone else here scored much higher than me, since I don't even consider myself a "gamer."

You're thinking he should think like you do. He doesn't.

Maybe, he enjoys making games. He does not like the spotlight or the attention and even though he could make money, he values peace and quiet more than he values money. I think I like that trait in a person more than I would like someone who hungers for money.

Seriously, it would be like suing someone for having candy in the title, or saga.

Of course he should have realized that on the internet the quickest way to get people to pay attention to you is to say "Please leave me alone."

He's going to get more attention now than ever and it's not going to be nice attention. But maybe that is what he really wanted. Hard to know these days.

Not everyone thinks like you. People were paying attention whether he spoke or not.

Not everyone thinks like you. People were paying attention whether he spoke or not.

If you are that much of an introvert, don't make a product for public consumption.

Was he unaware that people post reviews about apps?

You guys act like this guy was just minding his own business and suddenly everyone attacked him.

I felt bad for Star Wars kid, but I don't feel bad for this guy.

Nor do I feel bad for movie stars who make millions and then are frustrated that someone asks for an autograph when they go out to dinner. It comes with the territory.

This guy should have never made an app if he was too fragile to handle a little feedback.

Then he should have made an app and shared it with his friends not published it where it would be potentially downloaded by millions and subject to scrutiny.

And then he shouldn't have monetized it if he wasn't looking to make money.

Fantastic

Hats off to Dong!

Why?

This is the greatest conceptual art project of our times.

He brings us an impossibly difficult game with art that harkens to simpler times in the past and when people start getting up in arms over it he discontinues is because making that much money interrupts his quiet life with requests for interviews from journalists.

I think this is a better art project than the "Dumb Starbucks" outlet in California!
