If you're going to be playing the literal game, I literally said "will eventually stop working.". Gold records last between 1 billion to 5 billion years, so what I said is correct, EVENTUALLY they'll stop working. You want to play the literal game, here you go. So now, please point out what I said was false.

I said will eventually stop working. I didn't say "will stop working before you die".

But ok, let's move the goal post to "effectively forever". I replied to the person talking about Switch cartridges. Lifespan of those is ~20 years, "effectively" not forever.

They actually can charge whatever they want if they have a monopoly on selling PlayStation games. Once you have the console you need to buy the games from them. You can’t log in to steam on your PlayStation and buy games there

All physical media will eventually stop working. Perhaps Sony/Nintendo/Xbox division will die before your physical media does, but that's assuming no one steals it and no external forces break it.

Plus 15% of that $60-$70 price tag of your game went to the physical retailer. Consumers are far better off cutting out the middle man and just buying direct from the platform so that consumer/platform owner/developer can enjoy the benefits of that extra 15%.

This whole physical media debate is ridiculous. The trend towards digital is a clear signal that the future is no physical media. We're far better off if physical media gets deleted ASAP.

A part of me suspects Gamestop and other physical stores paid off some media company to root for physical media because otherwise they will cease to exist in the near future. And then a bunch (not you) of people is just jumping on the wagon because it's the hot new thing to complain about. At least that's what I would do if I was CEO of Gamestop.

One thing I am absolutely sure is that this is NOT good for consumers. That 15% will not be passed off to the consumer, its just extra profit for the developer/digital store. No one is arguing that physical media can fail (degrade, break, etc). However the likely hood of that happening before I die is very small, unlike the very likelihood that these digital stores will remove it from being able to purchase or download. You may not care about that but I and many others (not the majority) do care about that.

This completely removes the secondary market. We do not own our digital license, you lease your license. I do own my physical license and am responsible for it but that is my choice and I do not want that taken away from me.

The whole group of people who say ‘This whole physical media debate is ridiculous” are pretty ignorant of how they benefit from having access to physical media or DRM-free copies is what is ridiculous. I as a person who wants to own their physical copy do recognize the benefits of digital and why many people would want to go that route. I do not want to take that away as I also benefit from digital updates and DLC. I do not agree with giving up ownership of my licenses copy of the media I purchase. If you want to have that debate sure. To dismiss physical owners as ridiculous is short sighted and self centered behavior.

Just because a small population enjoys a thing or would like a thing does not mean it is irrelevant. Disabled people are in some way a small population. However after we finally got governments to recognize they exist and are entitled to public services and access we started implementing those functions into society. We all like automatic doors, ramps on sidewalks, push button doors to avoid germs.
