Sheesh guys, leave the poor guy alone. He's new here, we could stand to be a little bit gentler in correcting.
As for refurbs, I know a lot of you have had excellent luck with refurbs. I went so far as to tell my brother to forget buying new and get a refurb when he was shopping for an iPod a few months ago. He did, and was very upset when his refurb iPod arrived DOA. We were "almost" able to get it going a few times, but couldn't. He was so upset that he wanted to return it and forget about the whole thing, but the Apple rep he spoke to was telling him he could only exchange it for another refurb. Eventually he convinced the rep to return the dead refurb and pay the difference to buy a brand new one.
I know this was probably a rare occurrence but it did leave a bad taste in my mouth for refurb products. We have a store here in Ottawa called XS Cargo which specializes in selling refurb and overstock "junk", and it has also been our track record that virtually everything we bought from this store has turned out to be worthless crap (cordless phones in particular). My theory is that these are products which have esoteric issues that either are very transient (they don't show up when testing and the tester thinks, "no, this works fine") or very consistent (like a cordless phone with consistently bad sound but just "good enough" that the tester thinks it's fine).
I guess over the years I've learned to mistrust refurbished products, and unfortunately our first Apple refurb experience did nothing to change that perception.
