I’m on EE with a 5G plan and I’m in Manchester smack bang in the middle of a 5G area yet my iPhone 12 Max Pro does not display the 5G icon and download speeds are no better than 4G. My settings are correct.

Anybody else on EE and having difficulty seeing a connection to 5G?

Anything I could have missed?

I can’t speak to EE here specifically, but I know that here in the US carriers are requiring that the phone and account be provisioned for 5G. If you bought an iPhone 12 for EE that came with an EE SIM, then I would certainly expect that everything would be provisioned correctly, but if you bought a SIM free phone and just transferred the SIM from your older phone then it’s possible that it’s not. Probably worth a call to EE if you haven’t talked to them yet.

Thanks. The plan is a specific 5G plan so it should work fine, but I’ll give them a call in the morning anyway.

Are you switched to ‘5G On’ rather than ‘5G Auto’? Had similar with o2 but it sorted it

Are you just using one sim? I don’t know whether Apple has patched only being able to receive 4G when both the physical and Esim are in use yet. If you’re using the dual sim setup then that could be the issue.

I live and work in Manchester. I’ve never seen the 5G icon since owning the phone. Max download speed I’ve seen is about 110.

Something odd is going on with my iPhone 12 pro max on EE.
I'm in work now (Liverpool) and have 5g on my phone yet when i go home which doesn't have 5g the 5g symbol remains on my phone but I only get 4g download speeds??
I have '5g Auto' selected in settings rahter than '5g on' and I'm actually unsure of which this should be set to?

“5G auto” will show the 5G icon but if your phone doesn’t need 5G it will use 4G or LTE to save battery. It will still show the 5G icon.

“5G on” will always use 5G if available to the detriment of battery life.

Great thanks foir clearing that up. I hope you get yours sroted too.

12 pro, 5G SIM card, Verizon, 5G nationwide plan, No 5G icon though I toggled between 5G and 5G Auto right under a 5G tower here in Dunedin, Florida. Go figure

This happened for the first few days after I got my 12 Pro then it randomly connected to 5G... no idea what caused or fixed it

I wonder if it has something to so with the fact that the number has been ported across from THREE a couple of days ago? Just tried a download test and I’m getting 500Mbps but it’s still showing 4G!!

The other iPhone 12 we have works as it should. That one has not been ported From another carrier.

Found the problem and it’s weird....

In normal battery mode the 5G icon is displayed.
In low power battery mode the 5G icon is replaced by 4G, however, if you do a speed test you still get 5G speeds!!

Apple’s website states
  • If you turn on Low Power Mode, 5G will be disabled, except during video streaming. In China mainland, Low Power Mode also disables 5G Standalone.
