Found the problem and it’s weird....

In normal battery mode the 5G icon is displayed.
In low power battery mode the 5G icon is replaced by 4G, however, if you do a speed test you still get 5G speeds!!

Apple’s website states
  • If you turn on Low Power Mode, 5G will be disabled, except during video streaming. In China mainland, Low Power Mode also disables 5G Standalone.
5G icon still remains elusive for me, without low power mode enabled.

I work on Salford Quays and can get the 5G icon to show when I disable my secondary (work) SIM.

I'll be honest though, i'm finding the 5G speeds a little underwhelming, hovering around the 170Mbps to 200Mbps mark when running speedtests.

Don't think it's a case of the phone mislabelling 4G as 5G, as when I force 4G, speedtests are about half of the above. Really odd.

Quick question about old sim/new phone. The answer has been alluded to but I wanted to be sure.

Getting a 12 Mini tomorrow from Apple, will my current EE sim from my old X work okay? I know it’ll only be 4G, I’m not on a 5G plan anyway, just would like to know for sure it’ll work for crusty ‘ol LTE.

Cheers.

Yeah it will work fine in the phone, but as you say if it's a 4G plan that's the speeds and connection you'll get.

Thanks.

Not too fussed about 5G, I’m getting the Mini chiefly because I use my phone less and less these days anyway. It’ll be nice to have the option in future though of course.
