Having the same issue. It's whack because even if I lower the brightness in game on xbox 360 or ps3, it's still too bright and you can see all the pixels, ect.

I've been having the same issue and have been patiently watching this thread for good news. This BLOWS because I can't use my iMac's display as an external monitor, it's so bright I might go blind ... Come on Apple, fix this please !

I just upgraded from 10.6.7 straight to 10.7.1 since apple updated the lion download on the app store. I was going to install the 10.7.2 beta or just wait for the final release since it seems to be coming soon.

But, I'm surprised to report that the brightness controls remained intact when doing this upgrade. When I Command-Function-F2 to my windows PC input, the screen goes full brightness, but I am able to turn it back down with the brightness keys.

A fluke? Maybe Apple snuck the fix into the 10.7.1 full download on the App Store? Who knows! YMMV

I've been able to slightly fix the brightness issue when playing xbox 360. I go into the display settings and then reference levels and set them to expanded. then for the in game display settings, i try to knock down the brightness all the way and change any settings that allow me to set up the display for a computer monitor.

on ps3, it just seems to fix itself.

My brightness controls now work!

Ever since installing the latest security update from Apple. I downloaded it maybe 3-4 days ago or whenever it came out, and finally restarted the computer last night. And back to normal FINALLY!

Call me skeptical, cause I am. :) I don't see how a security update could fix it.

Beats the hell out of me, but it hasn't worked for a while now until this security update and a restart.

It can't be the restart either because I have restarted the computer not even a week ago.

Well, I've no way to test without upgrading to 10.6.8, and there's no way in heck I'm doing that without further confirmation. Thanks for your findings, though! Anyone else able to confirm it?

I'm running 10.7.1 with all the latest software and security updates, and I still cannot change the brightness in target display mode, so no, It's definitely not been fixed here either.

Just wait for 10.7.2. It'll be out when the iPhone 5 is out to coincide with iCloud, and it's confirmed fixed there in the dev builds. So 2 weeks or so.

Yep figured as much. Not sure why the guy above thought it was fixed, but I've seen stranger things.

10.7.2 installed here, on my late 2009 i7 iMac, and the brightness issue is definitely fixed! Yay! :D
