I always used to get the T-Mobile version, which seems to work for all networks that support GSM. But there is one tiny difference in a typical Apple fashion way: only the sim free version comes with a sim eject tool. The others require you to use a paperclip, because they come with a sim card inserted by default. Very interesting.

I am not sure that is totally accurate as my iPhone XS Max was AT&T Carrier version that I picked up at the Apple Store and it has the sim eject tool. Perhaps you mean if you buy it directly from the carrier?

Will this work with a regional carrier that is not one of the listed four?

Also, would this work with a phone purchased under the Apple Upgrade Program?

1. Yes
2. You still need a major carrier to sign up for the Apple Upgrade Program

Oh, then maybe that changed this year. Last year, my X that came shipped with a sim card didn't have a sim eject tool, and even the 7 before that didn't have. They were all T-Mobile versions. All bought from Apple.

apple.com has no carrier free version yet. So I ordered Verizon version at full price and
plan to activate using China mobile sim. Will this give me a true carrier-
free version so that later I can use it on any carrier? Thanks.
Dont worry. Activate with your chinese sim. All full paid xr regardless of sim are unlocked.
The included sim is just a courtesy from apple. Thats all.

If/When they release a sim free version, will it have more bands for other networks around the world? A truly world phone? Or is it just a regional (USA) phone?

The US sim free XS is exactly the same as the carrier models.
