A naked iPhone is like sex. Sure it feels better without protection... but things can get really bad/expensive if you are reckless enough to try it ;)

Cover it up for peace of mind.

Tell me I'm not crazy to carry this awesome new device without a case because it just looks a feels GREAT!
You don't need others to tell you. Do whatever works for you. For some a case is the way to go. For others it's not.

If people really did the math and thought about it, I don't think any logical person would ever use a case.
It's not all about math for everyone. It's about aesthetics for some (and that works both ways -- for and against cases). It's about risk mitigation for some. There's no one-size-fits-all solution despite what many on either side of the fence seem to think. Again, do what works for you. The next may do something enirely different.

just don't try to make it about resale when it's really about OCD...
As always, obsessive != OCD.

Just because you can't do it doesn't mean others can't.

Sorry but calling BS as if you carry and use your phone for a year with no case, sooner or later it will get scratched unless you are being so protective that it is ridiculous. This make me think that these phones are way to large of an investment for many here and they care too much about how they look.

Nothing like having to work for a living to support a family and pay bills that will get your priorities in their REAL order and loving your phone will not be on the very top of your list!:p

The case thing is obviously an individual thing. I would love to go without a case and if I had a nice warm comfy office job I would cos in my view the chances of dropping it and causing any real damage is less. I work in the emergency services and the amount of times I have been in work and got my phone out with grubby dirty hands or dropped it onto the pavement have been a few!

Thankfully my phone is in an otterbox defender. Therefore in my view if you have a job which involves working outside in far from ideal environments I think a case is a worthwhile investment.

I paid a lot of money for my phone so I want to look after it!

I got on mine minimalistic elago case only for scratch protection :)

I see your minimalistic elago case and raise you an even more minimalistic caudabe veil case. It's superb for keeping the iPhone in almost stock form. I would otherwise go naked but I don't like those inadvertent scratches from coins or keys. And the 5s has those chamfered edges that are easy to scrape up.

Wow I must check it, that case looks awesome

I always run my phones case-less, I am very abusive so they get scratched and dented and such, but I get a new one every 18 months so I really don't worry about it.

The one exception is with my iPhone 4s (that I still use), it does have a plastic case because I broke the glass on the back and kept cutting myself on the glass shards, so it is in a case now.

Wasn't there another thread just like this recently?

Anyway, I'm all for going caseless but why take a chance with scratches when there are good solutions out there. For 15 bucks I got a Caudabe Veil, it does what it's supposed to do and looks good doing it.

I've also thought about getting AppleCare, but the extra $99 just doesn't seem worth it since I typically upgrade every year anyway.

Yep absolutely ZERO sense in worrying about it.

Welcome to enjoying the device the way Steve intended it.

The last 3 "naked for 90% of their life" iPhones I sold all recieved the "like new" valuation anyway, but even if I did get dinged a few bucks (literally that's all it is in terms of difference, check Gazelle or other sites as a reference... and no, I don't mean for a decimated phone with a shattered screen, just one with wear and tear vs. one that's "pristine") the amount I've saved by NOT buying 3-8 cases (yes, I literally bought 8 different cases for my 3GS looking for the "perfect" one haha... I'm a nut with $$$) has MORE than made up for it.

If people really did the math and thought about it, I don't think any logical person would ever use a case. The exception being the people who can't stand a teeny tiny scratch on their PHONE (but fair enough, just don't try to make it about resale when it's really about OCD...).

:apple:

Who cares? That's the second time you've mentioned OCD. Who cares if someone likes their £500 phone to look "the way it was intended" (since that phrase is being banded around).

Sure you get to use it "how it was intended" but it sure as hell won't look like how "Steve intended" if you batter it sideways during use. I like my stuff to remain in good condition and this line about scratches "adding character" is a deflect and denial tactic.

I use a case when I go out and go caseless at home. My case cost me £5 from Tesco and is a clear "gel" case, it does the job just in case it takes a fall onto concrete.

Could I but AC+? Of course, but I prefer not having to time out my day to swap a phone I clumsily broke because I was too smug not to use a case on a windy day or that day some idiot ran into me trying I catch that train and knocked my phone out my hand (this happened to a work colleague),

I work for a living, own my own home, have bills to pay and a family to support. My income combined with my wife's is three times what we need per month to live on, so we are well off, and I still want my phone to remain pristine.

It's about respecting the things you work to buy, I don't understand why people don't get that. Could I afford to replace my iPhone if it smashed? Yes. That doesn't mean I act like a smug git and toss it around like a toy and ding it up.

Way too much time and effort typing this to defend using a case if you ask me.

I just got a 64gb iPhone 5s, I carried my 16gb 5 without a case for a year with zero issues.

Tell me I'm not crazy to carry this awesome new device without a case because it just looks a feels GREAT!

It looks and feels great indeed, naked, but it's a very expensive device, and it's fragile.

I can't use any of my iDevices without a case ....

One of my employers dropped his 4 this morning, face down, and cracked its screen.

Well, if it drops face down, most of the time it will crack also with a case

Why don't you have your iPhone 4s repaired ?

Who said I was defending using a case? I was answering people who throw around ridiculous terms and make odd assumptions based on people's preferences. The use of a case was a secondary topic in my reply.

OCD, keeping a phone pristine because they actually can't afford it, scratches add character, all a lot of absolute nonsense. And, being honest, no one did ask you.

I've never really used a case with any of my phones, iPhones included. The only time I have is while overseas as the access to getting it exchanged/repaired was a lot more of an issue while not in the country.

...If people really did the math and thought about it, I don't think any logical person would ever use a case...

I have one simply for comfort. It's soft, offer nice grip, and now doesn't rattle on hard surfaces or slide around on any surface.

Doesn't offer much protection though, I admit. Not as worried about that. ;)

I generally don't use cases, but it is an expensive investment that you carry around all the time. I recommend at least getting some kind of protection on it as I've found the aluminum housing to be fairly soft and susceptible to unintended scratches/damage and wear.
