At first I didn't want a case to hide the design elements of the iPhone 4. I wanted people to know I had the new iPhone (which is silly, I know). But I found the bumper made the device a bit more secure (and helped with the antenna issue). The all glass design makes it slippery so it always felt a little insecure in my hands without a case/bumper on it. Plus, when I had the phone in my jeans or sweatpants, it would slip out of my pocket every time I would get undressed since there was no traction. The bumper helped to keep it in place in my pocket or if I set it down somewhere.
As for scratches, I scratched the front of my phone I think cause I had my phone near my keys one day, either in my pocket or in my book bag. I was a bit surprised since I had never scratched my previous iPhones, except for the plastic backing. Either I was lucky back then or you have to be more careful with this glass.
I will seriously consider insurance or Apple Care if it protects from accidental dropping since I def dropped the iPhone 4 more than any previous iPhone.
One quick note about the bumper, my only complaint about it is you have to remove the bumper all the time if you want to put the phone in your dock, which is a daily event for me. Eventually the bumper gets worn and falls apart. Can't Apple make a dock that will have room for the bumper?
