Considering that it's on a store by store basis (I've been laughed out of the Lawrence and Cherry Hill AT&T stores and refused at the Cherry Hill Apple store trying to buy a no commitment 3GS not three months ago), I'd take any word of no contract pricing with a grain of salt until you can check at your local Apple/AT&T store, especially on a new release...

I know if you buy online from AT&T you can select 2-year, 1-year, or No Commitment pricing. Regarding brick-and-mortar stores, I've found it to be hit and miss. The AT&T store in the Rockaway Mall gave me a really hard time but let me do it, while the AT&T Corporate Store in Denville were quite willing to sell me any options I wanted.

Keep in mind, if you cancel your current contract and pay the ETF so you can buy an iPhone 4 subsidized, you won't be able to keep the unlimited data plan.

I understand...so if I were to use a T-Mo SIM (on a plan that has unlimited data, of course), would I actually lose anything?

How is it a store by store basis? Isn't this an offering by AT&T as a company? I'd be calling some upper management and raising hell. Of course, I wouldn't buy un-subsidized because I don't see the advantage.

I have 2 questions: when you cancel your contract, all you have to do is pay the ETF right? and AT&T lets you go, you get to keep your phone and do what you will? Also, how does non-commitment pricing work for someone who has NEVER been an AT&T customer?

Yet to part 1...don't know about part 2, but I think no.

....or your phone number.

What is the price of the phone?

That's been well published all over...including in our uprade guide...but whatever.........

Full Upgrade prices

8GB 3Gs - $99
16GB 4 - $199
32GB 4 - $299

Early Upgrade prices

8GB 3Gs - $299
16GB 4 - $399
32GB 4 - $499

can you only get the no-commitment price through AT&T? I don't think apple ever sold the 3gs for $599/699 outright.

question, when you buy the no commitment iphone 4, will it be already activated or do I have to spend $36 to activate and sign up a contract with at&t to activate the phone?

If you're going to activate it on AT&T, why wouldn't you just sign an contract and get it subsidized.

But yeah, you'd have to setup and account w/ AT&T and pay an activation fee.

I dont plan to use at&t. I want to get the iPhone then unlock it to use in another country or t-mobile, etc.

The activation you refer to is going to be on whatever carrier you set it up with. So if you unlock it, no need to activate on AT&T.

Ok i dialed *639# and it says "as a valued customer, we can offer you an upgrade with a new 2 year commitment and an $18 upgrade fee"

so that means i get the $199 price for the 16gm iPhone 4?

Yes....please read over the upgrade guide in my sig.

No, I mean in order to turn on the phone and have access to iPod and safari functionalities I would have to activate the phone.
In order to software unlock the phone, id still have to be able to turn on the phone, and in order to turn on the phone, it has to be activated by at&t, i think.

so if i buy a no commitment iphone4, idk if its already activated or not.

Mashable is reporting that the unsubsidized prices are $499 16gb and $599 32gb.

Do they just have wrong information?

How do you do that? Which prepaid plans? I thought AT&T doesn't allow iPhones on the go-phone plans.
I had a gen 1 Pre paid iPhone go phone. I used the same SIM and put it in a no contract 3GS. I know I'll need a mini SIM for the iPhone 4.. I'll ask if they will transfer my account to a mini SIM. if not, I'll cut it down to fit like I've see people trim it for the iPads.

Gecko,

Your guide states "Early upgrade, which is AT&T allowing you to upgrade but do not qualify for the best pricing, can purchase the iPhone at 399/499."

Does that mean if my upgrade eligibility is 2/2011, I can pay $399/499 and receive the phone on release date?

Thx

what? you put it in a no contract iphone, when you open the iphone 3gs for the first time and try to turn it on, was it already activated? or did you have to plug in a sim card that was already on contract to activate the phone?

no, on 2/2011 you qualify for the full upgrade pricing. If you want it on release date you will have to pay the non-subsidized price mentioned earlier in this thread.

I thought he could pay the early upgrade fee on release date? Not the full price, but no the cheapest either...

No. If you are eligible for an early upgrade, AT&T will state exactly that. If you want to double check to see if you are eligible for an early upgrade, I suggest calling AT&T to double check.

Okay I see. I just got a text back, and it read, I can purchase an iPhone at a discounted, but higher price. I'm guessing thats the early upgrade option.
