Just contacted Apple, and got confirmed the hardware in Apple Watches series 4 is all the same.

I am in the UK and so glad I read this forum. I was all ready to order the watch tomorrow for it's ECG capabilities ( I have intermittent AF ) I already have Apple Watch 2 so I think I will now have to hold off for a while. Very disappointed.

Come on, did Apple was in talks with countires when they introduced heart rate monitor? No, so what is a big deal with different approach to ECG monitor? Whats odd some european Apple sites says ECG sensor listed as part of tech specs.

Just checked UK site and this is on webpage

Electrodes built into the Digital Crown and the back crystal work together with the ECG app to read your heart’s electrical signals. Simply touch the Digital Crown to generate an ECG waveform in just 30 seconds. This data can indicate whether your heart rhythm shows signs of atrial fibrillation — a serious form of irregular heart rhythm — or sinus rhythm, which means your heart is beating in a normal pattern.ECG app coming later this year.

how do you know?
Because it wouldn't make sense if it wasn't; if the hardware functionality is missing then they can't add support later. Plus they'd have to set up separate production lines, which is a big bother, plus the dreaded "customer confusion" where they have to explain to everyone that one of their most ballyhoo'd features during the whole presentation is missing everywhere except in one single country. They even had a cardiologist up on stage for chrissakes holding a silly speech about the heart monitoring features, to then deny basically everywhere that feature would be ridiculous. :p

Also, they haven't announced that the hardware isn't the same, so until there's official word, what they've announced so far still stands I would say.

So, if you have a US App Store account to get the app, location set to US, it should work anywhere?

Just tried to buy an app on us store after changing location and it says I can't do that. Must be doing something wrong. I can't seem to get a US store account as my credit card is registered in uk. Paypal does not seem to work either :(

Even if you get the app .... the likelihood of a UK medical professional taking the ECG seriously until approval is minimal, IMHO of course :)

Of course.

But for ones own interest, I could definitely go by with using a US account to just get the app, and then switch back to my normal danish account afterwards.

I understand that but as it is a diagnosed condition it is for my own benefit to see how often it is happening and to distinguish SVTs from AF which often feel the same to me with the exception of AF last a lot longer for me.

I just need to figure out how to get a US account without a US credit card. :)

Using an US itunes giftcard worked for me :)

It'll be interesting to see if 3rd party developers are allowed access to the ECG sensor and Apple can bypass European (and other territories) regulations that way in reaching consumers.

Lots of good advice online on how to do this ;)

The ECG app won’t be in the App Store. It will be part of a WatchOS update. You could get the US update and try to force it on your watch. But then your LTE function won’t work for your country.

If AliveCor can sell this in the UK, I don't see why the delay for Apple to allow UK users to make use of the feature on the S4:

https://shop.gb.alivecor.com/products/kardiamobile

I bought a Kardia more than a year ago, and there are no restrictions on the ability to purchase them here. I found it odd when they said during the keynote yesterday that the feature of the Apple Watch is the first of its kind...

I think LTE function has nothing to do with where your Apple ID account located.

I also have a Kardia watch strap but find it is a bit temperamental although still useful.

I will try to find a workaround.

Agree with others, hopefully this is overcome with a region change (on your phone). This is how the news app first became viewable before being available in the UK.

It’s also seemingly how the Pride watch face becomes unavailable in Russia. By setting my phone region to Russia the watch face is no longer viewable in the watch face gallery
