I was an hour ago in an UK Apple store. I don't want to say the area because it will be easy to identify persons. I asked about the ECG and the girl there told me "sorry not available in EU for unkown time frame" I noticed that her name was Greek (I'm Greek)and I tried to discuss with her in Greek off the record.

She told me, I'm not allowed to say that but if you are in the UK and change the location settings to the US(of course when ecg is available in the USA) the ECG will work just fine. Nothing more needed.
This is applicable only for the gps models not the cellular

This is big news if true!

I tried to be more clear by saying "if I'm in the uk and change the location settings to the USA the ECG will work, right?" And she said if it is the gps only model yes with the cellular no.
I really hope to be true because i waited for my first Apple Watch until the keynote and I really want it but I will be grumpy not to be able to use it

Thank you for your time to get the information regarding ECG, hopefully it should work on Nike+.

In meantime - are you able to change region for the AW3?

Unfortunately I have no previous Apple Watch. I have a fetish with regular watches and in the past I spent 4 digits amounts for them. I was always negative but I tried for a while a cheap Chinese band I saw I like it and now I plan to buy an Apple Watch not as a watch replacement but to wear it on my right hand and keep my regular watch on my left hand.

I am thinking of buying a Nike edition because it's the same hardware, you get the band for gym that are reflective too and some watch face (That i don't care about ). Now I'm looking for nice bands to use daily

Here it looks like that it is possible https://igotoffer.com/apple/set-language-region/

Without an Apple Watch until next week but by changing the region on your iPhone, the iOS Watch app will hide the pride watch face in the Face Gallery if you opt for Russia, so it would seem to be controlled at iPhone level.

There’s a single GPS version for each size/material that is used internationally. Cellular model numbers differ across territories. Perhaps there’s a hard coded region restriction in place on the cellular models that will only be lifted when those regions receive approval for ECG to be used

Even if you get the app .... the likelihood of a UK medical professional taking the ECG seriously until approval is minimal, IMHO of course :)

To be honest, even if approved it’s unlikely they’ll take it seriously. We do not have the culture of consultant/gp communication here in the UK the way the the Americans do. You do everything through the hospital or on visits. Very rare that a doctor will give you their email address. Often you don’t even know who you will be seeing when you turn up to a clinic appointment. I have a feeling a request for a doctor to view your ecg from your watch will be met with ‘well let’s just get you on a proper machine and have a look shall we?’

If AliveCot can sell this in the UK, I don't see why the delay for Apple to allow UK users to make use of the feature on the S4:

https://shop.gb.alivecor.com/products/kardiamobile

I bought a Kardia more than a year ago, and there are no restrictions on the ability to purchase them here. I found it odd when they said during the keynote yesterday that the feature of the Apple Watch is the first of its kind...

Because alivecot is not a wearable device, and it’s not built into a smart watch. What they meant was it’s the first of its kind, ergo, a smart watch that can read an ecg.

I’m not sure I agree completely about the GP. When I’m in the UK my GP and surgery are very into using online resources to save wasted visits and communication is often by email or even Skype. As for the ECG I guess it will take time but that’s not to say things won’t change. Having read lots about the S4 since release for me the biggest and most impressive feature will be alerting people to potential health conditions that they were unaware of.

Not necessarily a bad thing. If the reading from your watch triggers you to make a visit to your GP and start a dialogue with your doctor it can only be a good thing.

As you say they’re likely not set up to input any readings from the Watch into the system but they can easily observe the data on your smartphone prompting further investigation.

I was looking earlier for something unconnected with Apple Watch and I spotted one interesting academic paper here https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2452302X16300638

Among others, this paper mentions the following interesting thing (page 4-5):

“In the EU, every marketed medical device must carry a Conformité Européenne (CE) mark indicating that it conforms to relevant directives set forth in the EC Medical Device Directives of the EU. A device with a CE mark can be marketed in any EU member state. Medical devices that are non-implantable and considered low risk are “self-marked,” meaning that the manufacturer itself simply certifies compliance and applies a CE mark (30). High-risk devices must undergo a more extensive outside review.“

Of course the article continues with the case of high risk medical device approvals but I don’t think that Apple Watch is in this category. What I think is the key is the phrase “Medical devices that are non-implantable and considered low risk are “self-marked,”” meaning I guess that we will be able to use fully the new Apple Watch in Europe.
