That's okay. My Droid X contract doesn't expire until August anyway (worst purchase ever! Switching from iOS to Android wasn't a good decision on my part)

Just bought my first iPhone this weekend, the 3GS for only $49 and I am extremely happy. One of the reasons I passed on the Iphone 4 is 1) price and 2) eligibility to upgrade to the iPhone 5 in 12-18 months. Oh, yeah, the third reason is I wouldn't mind the slightly larger screen that is predicted for the next model.

Since Verizon just got the iPhone 4 I suspected that 5 would take longer time to come to market so as not to anger new verizon users.

Anyway, like always, Apple will do what Apple does when they are ready and not before.

Unless you are psychologically harmed by not having the latest version, isn't it better for upgrades to come sooner rather than later, all else being equal?
All else being equal, of course.

However, if a phone is released a few months later, there's a good chance it'll have more/better features than if released earlier.

Absolute rubbish. Apple is required to stick to a two-year release cycle. Why? Because how long contracts are. They have tens of millions of customers who still have the 3GS (and who didn't pay the extra bucks to get the iPhone 4) who will be eligible for two-year subsidized phone under contract. So when all of those renewals come up in June you're telling me that Apple is just going to stand pat with the iPhone 4 and watch as AT&T (and all of the other carriers across the globe) push newly-released Android phones to the customers who want a new two-year contract?

Yes, I'm aware that most providers allow you to keep paying monthly and that people could just wait until September to upgrade to the iPhone 5. But there's no way that with Apple's increased competition from Android that they're going to drag their feet. NO WAY.

Here we go again

Not getting too wound up about this rumor. I don't see it.

However... maybe just a minor refresh in June and an all new phone in September????

This way Apple can focus attention on Lion this summer and put the CMDA iPhone in sync with the GSM phone? Would make the iPhone 5 HOT for the holidays too.

Just thinking.

I want it in June. And by the way, an 18-month cycle would not be a good thing. If anything, they should move to a shorter cycle in ordee to better compete with the new Android phones/tablets. Either that or they should stick to the yearly cycle because it makes them more predictable to the average consumer who does not read Macrumors or some tech blog. They can depend on Apple coming out with the new product the same time every year. This also makes phone contracts easier to deal with.

maybe i just dont like change, but i call this BS. ipad will be out april/may. iphone june/july as usual.

i want an iphone again. i got my £ ready. if iphone 5 came out tomorrow i'd buy it! hurry up apple! :D

I don't see that happening. Too much competition for Apple to continue to rest on the iPhone 4. Personally, I would love it b/c I'm not eligible for a new phone until Nov anyway.

One thing that is different during this year's cycle is mid-year product introductions, with the iPhone 4 making its way to Verizon earlier this month, and potentially offering a way for Apple to milk more life out of the device.

Actually that has happened before, between the 3GS and 4 in the UK.

So is this analyst just new to Apple and their last-minute-manufacturing process, or is he trying to get AAPL on the cheap?

Apple runs into component delays and shortages all the time. It rarely if ever affects a release. When you're placing orders for 100mil components, your suppliers tend to find ways of pulling out the stops.

I've been saying this for a long time. Note my recent post on this subject: http://iphone.appstorm.net/general/hardware-news/why-iphone-5-isnt-coming-in-june-or-july/

It kinda makes sense. Apple doesn't need annual updates and they can stretch to 18-month ones. They might be intending to focus primarily on Mac for the first half of 2011, and then iOS/iPod in the second.

It doesn't make much sense. Of course, they don't need annual updates...but with competition as it is, it can only hurt them if they only updated once every 18 months. They are a company, and their goal is to make money. They have a sure thing every June (and beyond)...why would they mess with that?

Aww, I like the regular releases. So far I've turned a profit each time the new one comes out (so long as AT&T keeps letting me get the "new" price after a year like they've done each time thus far).
How? I've only been able to get the discounted price when I'm eligible for an upgrade (every 2 years).

I dunno about this year but it may be a bad thing next year if this pushes next year's update to September.

Why? Well when the iphone 4 was put out AT&T pushed up a lot of people's upgrades to get them into contract before Verizon got their iphone. So next year around June a lot of people are going to be due for upgrades. And if there isn't a new iphone (and by that time the 2011 iphone will be getting long in the tooth) some might get impatient and start looking at other phones and get themselves into a different "ecosystem" (I mean Apple's strategy I think is not just to get people into iphones, but into the whole "ecosystem").

Who needs iphone 5?

I say fix the iPhone 4, I am on my third iPhone 4 and this piece of crap gives me so much problems. Now Apple doesn't want to help over the phone as my phone support expired. This is a great phone when it works, but when it doesn't it's a headache.

My third replacement now gives me Error 1193 when trying to sync with the iTunes, can't put photos, can't load videos, it's a crap not a phone.

Is there a product that doesn't have a major rumor about it? Phones, iMacs, MBPs and iPads . . . oh my. This one seems very plausible though. Just doesn't make sense to release the iPhone at Verizon and only a few months later, change it up. I can't really think of any major change I have been wanting in it anyway, as compared to the last update.

How? I've only been able to get the discounted price when I'm eligible for an upgrade (every 2 years).

I believe your upgrade eligibility is dependent upon the cost of your monthly bill. I have 2 phones on my account, and 1 gets an upgrade every year and the other gets the 2 year upgrade. Luckily, I've gotten a new phone every year when they have come out and paid the upgrade price (though, every other year I have to do an upgrade swap.)

hope its not true

So they added litepath to the iPad and that caused a delay?
As a iPhone 3G user, I honestly dont know that I can wait till September for an iPhone 5. My once cool iPhone 3G has become the slowest phone I have ever had. Even the iPod app crashes. My wife upgraded to iPhone 4 and she laughs every time she tries to use my 3G because its just that much slower.

The ONLY thing I can think that Apple could POSSIBLE be adding to the iPhone 5 that would warrant this delay would be 4G, but that has been discussed before, the protocol is not hashed out well enough yet, but it could be a worthy reason.

With regards to the iPad, this delay will affect app sales because I know I cant be the only iOS developer that just refused to buy the original iPad due to lack of features, and since I cannot test my apps on the device, I cannot support my apps on iPads. Maybe its a poor decision but an iPad is $500, do you know how long it would take to recoup that investment in iOS app sales when you know there is a new one coming out with all the features you want.

I really hope there is no truth in this.
