Following close on the heels of analyst claims that Apple made last-minute design changes to the second-generation iPad that will see the device not launch until June, Business Insider now reports that FBR Capital Markets analyst Craig Berger is similarly predicting that the fifth-generation iPhone may not make an appearance until September.Apple has released new iPhone models nearly like clockwork each year in June or July since the device's debut in 2007. Consequently, a September launch for the next-generation model would be a significant deviation from that trend, which Apple executives have acknowledged is part of an annual cycle of product releases.

One thing that is different during this year's cycle is mid-year product introductions, with the iPhone 4 making its way to Verizon earlier this month, and potentially offering a way for Apple to milk more life out of the device. But at least for the time being, that effect would only apply in the United States, as the CDMA device has not yet launched in other markets and many countries do not even offer significant CDMA-based networks on which the device could run. In a similar vein, Apple has said that it will be releasing the white iPhone 4 sometime this "spring", which could provide another boost to the line, although Apple has of course already delayed the device's launch several times and some observers are skeptical that it will ever see a release.

Still, we tend to take most research analyst claims with a grain of salt, as they tend to be wrong more often than right. But they do occasionally offer up accurate information from Apple's supply chain, and thus it bears watching to see if more independent claims of this nature begin to surface.

So they added litepath to the iPad and that caused a delay?
As a iPhone 3G user, I honestly dont know that I can wait till September for an iPhone 5. My once cool iPhone 3G has become the slowest phone I have ever had. Even the iPod app crashes. My wife upgraded to iPhone 4 and she laughs every time she tries to use my 3G because its just that much slower.

The ONLY thing I can think that Apple could POSSIBLE be adding to the iPhone 5 that would warrant this delay would be 4G, but that has been discussed before, the protocol is not hashed out well enough yet, but it could be a worthy reason.

With regards to the iPad, this delay will affect app sales because I know I cant be the only iOS developer that just refused to buy the original iPad due to lack of features, and since I cannot test my apps on the device, I cannot support my apps on iPads. Maybe its a poor decision but an iPad is $500, do you know how long it would take to recoup that investment in iOS app sales when you know there is a new one coming out with all the features you want.

I really hope there is no truth in this.

Restore back to 3.1.3, it's what I have done and if I have used that for so long, another few months won't hurt. :)

They'd lose out on a lot of handsets to other manufacturers if they waited until Sept..

18 month updates will only mean more money for Apple and all the cell providers since most people will be likely to upgrade without any price penalties.

If I could pay the subsidized price every 18-months and not get hit by any provider fees I would most definitely get a new iPhone with each release. Otherwise I am only getting a new iPhone once every 2-3 years.

yea, I did that before but needed a 4.2 device to test on. I think this might be the sign to give up on 4.x on a 3G and roll back. Although last time I noticed locate my iPhone didn't work with the same device any more once I upgraded to 4.2 then back to 3.1.3.. I didn't get any Find my iPhone alerts (when i lost it in the couch) till i found it and upgraded it to 4.2... Maybe it was a fluke.

iOS convergence

I can totally see this and mentioned it in another thread not long ago. I could totally see there being an iOS convergence to fall in line with the current iPod September announcement/release.

I think it would make Verizon and AT&T happy as well. Besides, that late in the game MAY lend to LTE adoption in the iPhone as well to compete against Android.

Dislike :(

I was really hoping for a release over the summer... My 2nd gen iPod touch is finally starting to feel sluggish, so I though the iPhone 5 would've been a perfect upgrade. Plus developing iOS Apps for the iPhone over the summer seemed like a good way to spend summer vacation. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Could it be possible that Apple is going to shift the actual iPhone release to the same period as iPod (touch) which has kinda tiny market share?

As the previous rumors about ipad 2/3 will be out this year, it could just be put for the June/July annual release by Apple, right?

Just my luck... 3G guy, who originally (not knowing the cycle) bought the 3G in Feb to see the 3GS come out in June/July. I promised myself I would suffer through the 4-5 months until June rolled around this year, sothat 2 year contract would annually expire just in time to get the "new" iPhone.

So if this is true, I will obviously wait until September to get the newest iPhone (because I need a new one- slow, slow 3G...I know 3.1.3... but that's not going to help the broken Home button...slow and broke), but again- not be on the right cycle if they go back to a June "refresh".

I totally agree, while Android devices seem to come each month (if not week... maybe a little exaggerated) I believe a draw to the iPhone is that each June/July you know the newest one will be out. There is something to say about consistency. Here's hoping this rumor is not true.

Non-sense.

If iphone releases in September, then what's next?

Apple will delay ipod touch and ipod until November?

They have to because ipod touch does compete with iphone. They are very similar.

No. Apple will stick with their current schedule.

I agree with you....Apple has never missed a Iphone release schedule. Its always in the summer. The Iphone 5 will be released sometime this summer..maybe not in June but definitely in by end of July.

The Ipad 2 will be out in April.

June iPad? :mad::mad::mad:

My sister and I were going to get our mom an iPad for Christmas...it would be everything she needs and more...but we decide to wait until iPad 2 assuming it would have a video chat camera. So we decided on Mother's Day & birthday...May 8th & 16th.

Come on man, she's already begging for an iPod touch...even though she's not happy with how small the display & keyboard are.

As much as I don't want it to be true, I am worried it could be. The main reason is due to the white iPhone 4. What would be the point of sorting out all the issues with it, releasing it in the spring, and then replacing it a few months later? (assuming there will be a white iPhone 5/4S/Whatever it will be called)

Suppose it would not be the end of the world, and am happy with my iPhone 4, but am always tempted by "whats coming next".

I hope it's not true.

I cannot wait until I ditch my HTC Hero Android phone. It is the bane of my existence and everyone else in my office that got one. I wouldn't even categorize it as a beta product, and alpha may even be too generous.

As much as I believe the iPhone 4 is near perfection (especially now that it's on Verizon), I'm sure Apple will pull some rabbit out of a hat for iPhone 5, and I'll be kicking myself for not being patient.

Same here. My 3G is on its last legs. Still running 3.1.3 and compatible apps dropping away like flies. I needs me a new phone but I'm not getting a '4 this late in the day.

I feel your pain. I spider-cracked the glass on the 3G. Hopefully by the end of the week, I'll have a a new touchscreen/digitizer assembly. Contract is up in June and ATT is giving me the option of early upg on the 28th. Do I succumb to instant gratification & get a 4 or do I wait to mid-July after the WWDC smoke clears? Decisions, Decisions.

There are a lot of tech junkies out there that must have the latest and greatest. Even if it's not even released yet ;)

I say fix the iPhone 4, I am on my third iPhone 4 and this piece of crap gives me so much problems. Now Apple doesn't want to help over the phone as my phone support expired. This is a great phone when it works, but when it doesn't it's a headache.

My third replacement now gives me Error 1193 when trying to sync with the iTunes, can't put photos, can't load videos, it's a crap not a phone.

dude..where are you getting your phones. I have never had issues, or heard of anything like that from anyone I know.
